The Dalai Lama on Monday criticised China's irate response to the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to jailed dissident Liu Xiaobo, Kyodo News reported in Tokyo.
Speaking at Tokyo's Narita airport, the Dalai Lama, said “the Chinese government does not appreciate different opinions at all".
He also said “building an open, transparent society is the only way to save all people of China but that some "hardliners" inside the leadership were stuck in an "old way of thinking,"
These tibetan are pathetic religious fanatics...fuck idiots, shut the fuck up already...there are other causing out there that are simply more noble and urgent than the creation of buddhist theocracy.
In the mid-nineteenth century Britain made repeated overtures to Tibet to open a land route for trade purposes, essentially a covert design to expand the plunder of China. The Tibetans were fearful of Britain, so they always rebuffed British offers. In the first two years of the twentieth century the British made up their mind to force open Tibet, instead of waiting for Tibetan consent.
The meticulous planning to attack Tibet started when George Nathaniel Curzon was the Viceroy of British-India. A 28 year old Curzon who had embarked upon a tour of Asia in 1887, much to the dislike of his austere father who believed that landowners should stay on their land and not roam the world, continued travelling till 1895, and had been mesmerised by the wealth of the East.
Four years after his travels in Asia, Curzon at the age of forty was picked from a junior governmental office in Britain to the British Raj on the 6th of January 1899. This ambitious man often described as an out-and-out imperialist, who would continue to hold the high office of Viceroy till the 18th of November 1905, desired to earn a name for himself, and chose to fulfil his ambition through the expansion of the British Raj by colonisation of the adjoining countries.
Tibet lying to the immediate north, strategically located between China, India and Russia, drew his attention. He strongly advocated the colonisation of Tibet on the pretext to create a buffer between powerful Russia and his British Indian Empire, but the real intention perhaps was to expand the lucrative opium trade in China, which had been subjugated by the British in the Opium Wars half a century earlier.
we do not hear those applied to Spanish and French policies toward the Basque minority. We do not hear those applied to the US annexation of the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1898. And Diego Garcia? In 1973, not so long ago, the UK forcibly deported the entire native Chagossian population from the Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia. When the Olympics come to London in 2012, the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu will certainly lead the demonstrators protesting the "demographic aggression"in Diego Garcia.
China's one-child-policy seems oppressive to Westerners, but it has not applied to minorities, only to the Han Chinese. Tibetans can have as many children as they choose. If Han people have more than one child, they are punished.
There is a similar preference given to minorities when it comes to admission to universities. For example, Tibetan students enter China's elite Peking University with lower exam scores than Han Chinese students.
Considering this context, China's treatment of its minorities has been exemplary compared to what the Western world has done to its minorities. After thousands of years of Chinese dominance, there still are more than 50 minorities in China. After a few hundred years of European dominance in North and South America, the original minority cultures have been exterminated, damaged, or diminished.
The Chinese government is responsible for the well-being and security of one-fourth of humanity. Race riots and rebellion cannot be tolerated, not even when done by Buddhist monks.National boundaries are not natural. They all arise from history. China has long claimed Tibet as part of its territory, The recent race riots in Tibet and the anti-Olympics demonstrations will not cause China to shrink itself and abandon part of its territory.
FACT: In 821 China and Tibet ended almost 200 years of fighting with a treaty engraved on three stone pillars. The whole region to the East of that being the country of Great China and the whole region to the West being assuredly the country of Great Tibet, from either side there shall be no hostile invasion, no seizure of territory... and in order that this agreement establishing a great era when TIBETANS shall be happy in TIBET and CHINESE shall be happy in CHINA shall NEVER be changed.
Anyone who has walked the streets of China in the past few years will understand what the olympics means to the Chinese people and these are the only people who can and will change the policies of their goverment, and their goverment is the only one who can change the situation in Tibet. That includes western tanks, bombs, boycotts and certainly bourgeoise western protests.Ask yourself the question, do you really want to "free Tibet" or do you just want to give yourself a good moral pat on the back.
NAZI CHINA "Don`t mix olympic up politics" great china olympic history 1956 CHINA boycotted Melborne (Taiwan issue) 1960 CHINA boycotted Roma (Taiwan issue) 1964 china boycotted Tokyo (Nuclear test) 1968 CHINA boycotted Mexico (Taiwan issue) 1972 CHINA boycotted München (Taiwan issue) 1976 CHINA boycotted Montreal (Taiwan issue) 1980 CHINA boycotted Moscow (Afghanistan issue this is a red joke of NAZI CHINA next is our turn.BOYCOTT CHINA OLYMPIC!
The chinese treat the TIbet people better than others, they even built the railway in tibet to help their economy. Shame on the western media, lied to the people!!!
Tibetans were slaves before PRC freed them in 1950s. Why cannot you understand and accept the fact that the chinese brought higher quality of lives into Tibet. Have you been there and saw what really happenned in Lasa before you made the comments against chinese government. The Tibet independent group were killing innocence and setting fires on the streets in Lasa. The chinese police went in to stop them. Some media took away your human right of knowing the real truth and history behind Tibet!
For the Tibetans, it was not in the interest of the Tibetan people that Mao and the PLA/PRC went into Tibet. Asides if you think Tibet was bad read up on the Chinese Communist party starting back in 1929. They make what you post here look like Sunday school picnics and charity. Facts which you point out are great things use them don't be closed minded and try to spin things worse then most claim the western media does.
PRC ended slavery in Tibet. What more need I say on this topic? Go stare at the Lincoln memorial for a few minutes if you do not appreciate "ending slavery".
Yes the CCP had, and has its problems. But on the issue of Tibet you are not dealing with CCP, you are pitting yourself against the Chinese people.
Also, if you think the current CCP administration is the same CCP in 1929, or even 1989, be ready to find yourself surprised.
PRC still keep their own people in slavery. how can you say that it ended slavery in Tibet? If it were like Lincoln Memorial not only we Tibatan appriciate the world will appriciate it.
we are not against the chinese people. we are pity for chinese people what their government has done to them.
what are the differance bitween current ccp and the ccp 1929, or even 1989. can't you see it? if you are as same as one blinded person by ccp government. sorry for you.
For the most part most of us Chinese DO respect western media's neutrality and accuracy, and that's why we feel frustrated that on this topic there is a widespread bias against China, with prevalent false images and video proof.
There is already a backlash against democracy in China triggered by western media's recent performance. Not only have NBC,CNN tarnished their own credibility, they have justified CCP's mocking of "freedom of speech" in the Chinese minds.
Respecting a culture is one thing. Though honestly i get tired of the PR Parrots on here that just spout off slogans without doing research into the topic at hand. In this case a free Tibet and it's occupation from 1949 onward. I know in some part by modern view that the PRC/PLA has done some good by ending slavery but that like it was in england/usa/etc should have been a internal matter for Tibet not something forced upon it by a invading force using a flimsy pretext for invasion.
We obviously don't appreciate each other's arguments. All the more important we have this conversation. There was an article on NYT a few days ago titled "China's Loyal Youth", which examined the west's fundamental mis-understanding of this generation of Chinese. It is high time people in China and the west start talking on a people level, instead of through the politicians' shadow-boxing. It is high time we start confronting the demons of decades of propaganda on both sides.
I have in no way meant to and apologize in earnest if I have failed to make my distinction between the PRC/CCP and the regular people in china. The PRC of today is a more moderate form of the forces from 1929 but still hold the PLA's gains from those time periods and to my understanding never apologized to the people they put into camps or killed. IF you think abu ghraib is bad check out the re-education camps and to others that never made it into the camps death of a thousand cuts for example
"The PRC of today is a more moderate form of the forces from 1929.." Wow... Enlighten me, What happened in 1929?
Comparing the present Hu Administration in China with the Zhao Administration in 1989 would be equivalent to comparing our beloved Bush Junior to Kennedy.
Which re-education camp were you referring to? Both Zhao and Deng spent their time in re-education camps, and who would you think should apologize to these two CCP?
inkyin your cut and pasting and trying to obscure the main issue. Tibet was free from china until 1949 when Mao sent the PLA in to that nation. Now please post a original thought or get out the way of the folks who want to talk seriously. Hate doing it but youtube does allow folks to block others and your getting close to my blocking you.
Feel free to do so. If you are so afraid of opinions different from yours, and fear facts so much you have to call them "cut and paste", then whether you block my posts or not is of zero importance.
If you do care about whether Tibet was a "nation" or not, try this: google and find out who has the authority to entitle a "Dalai Lama". To talk seriously, you need to arm yourself with a few facts under your belt.
Have no fear about different opinions I just prefer someone actually speak from research and study instead of parroting someone else's PR and 5 minuets of fame speech. I'll give you another one to google research the PRC/PLA's military expansion through out the Asia from 1949 to say mid 50's. Think those charming little facts will surprise you. Now also research MAO and the re-education camps of the PRC, then research the PLA's information gathering and terror techniques.
If we looked at US's military expansion alone, what conclusion could we have drawn? That the US has occupied the entire planet?
So what does the PLA's military expansion alone prove? Remember, until the civil war began there was no presence of federal army on confederate soil either. Where does that lead us?
Talking about "information gathering technique", try "waterboarding" and "abu ghraib". I'm sure you don't need google to remind you those charming little facts.
Alright lets look at the military expansion we've given back over 90% of everything the USA has ever took during the declared wars. About the only place we are still guilty of is with the native Americans which thankfully they have been winning legal cases instead of force of arms to get compensation and other things back. The American Civil War was about 2 things mainly States Rights and Slavery and it was a CIVIL war not a gross occupation of a nation on flimsy pretext IE Tibet/PRC.
I can't believe you consider the native Americans got a deal to be thankful for. Their population has been nearly wiped out while Tibetan population in Tibet has almost tripled since 1950. Boozing and gambling are the best known features on Indian reserves, thanks to those legal cases. Tibet, on the other hand, saw the introduction of public education, public health system and a booming economy after his holiness and his aristocrats could no longer keep slaves.
NBC's insistence on using Nepalese video footage is just baffling to me. Is this some sort of a revenge against Chinese government's block on western media access to Tibet? If your base your reporting on this kind of rubbish how could you call yourself responsible media? Is sensationalism so important that you can sacrifice your professionalism as journalists?
Wow. NBC still uses Nepalese police action footages as proof of Chinese crackdown. Is it really that difficult for NBC to respect facts and not fabricate?
Yes, compare to killing people using machine gun & bomb, it is moderate.
Do not judge China if you do not know it. I hate you judging on other country. If you return the continent to Indian people, Chinese will let Tibet go.
Join Tibet dot Com sign petitions help Tibet! Tibet wanted to send a sports team to the Olimpics, beijing said NO! Dalai Lama even accepts a peacefull solution not independence, but commies are EVIL!
Commies are the strongest force and scum of humanity. They come in strong numbers and are known for massive killings and torturing. By doing business in China we support a lot of young slaves. Protesting will never stop a commie (you are going to get killed). So just move away and stop supporting them. I guess the money is the only thing that is keeping the USA as solid customers.
If you really want to count years of Chinese "occupation", you'd have to go back to the Yuan dynasty in the 1300's. Way before there was US, Canada, modern Germany, etc.
"Truth" is an overloaded term. Let's start with facts first.
The lack of imagination of this CCP agents:) Everyday their chief gives them some stupid maiost propaganda and they spam and spam and spam. Really, CCP agents, don't you fear the consequences of the Tibetan blood in your hands?
How does Dali Lama know how many were killed in the Tibetan riot? He must have a connection with people to know this fact. But nevertheless, thanks for the great video, no propoganda what so ever.
Why don't you tell your government to let journalist and independent investigation team in Tibet so that world can know who is responsible for all this?

British imperialists wanted to subjugate Tibet 50 years after they had bullied and raped the Chinese during the Opium Wars (1938-early 1940s).
Tibet is the HIGHEST TERRAIN; and in war (even taught by Sun Tzu), those who command high territory will win the war.
Do you need a POLITICAL SCIENCE DEGREE to understand why the British (Western powers and now U.S.) are salivating for Tibet....

Dalai Lama striped baby skin.
How comes he is moderate?

Ain't that the truth. 60+ years of occupation is enough.
MordaxTenebre 3 years ago
If you really want to count years of Chinese "occupation", you'd have to go back to the Yuan dynasty in the 1300's. Way before there was US, Canada, modern Germany, etc.
"Truth" is an overloaded term. Let's start with facts first.

How does Dali Lama know how many were killed in the Tibetan riot? He must have a connection with people to know this fact. But nevertheless, thanks for the great video, no propoganda what so ever.

Why don't you tell your government to let journalist and independent investigation team in Tibet so that world can know who is responsible for all this?
tsayang 3 years ago
We do. Many Chinese criticize the government on various web forums every day. It is not much but we do with whatever freedom of speech we can.
How does that justify NBC using fabricated video footage though?
