It cannot work , the equipment needed would be costly and the maintenance and upkeep to keep it all going would be an expensive nightmare......better to use solar on the roof much less moving parts to go wrong
This has allready been invented. Pluse it is impossible to have a perfect energy sorce that is ever flowing. Allways some energy will be waisted so its impossible for a gym to "run it self".
This kid is right but he is definitely not the first person to think of this. And dumbbells and weights could be applied as well. Imagine a stall or booth with a bar running into holes on either side of you. Set the resistance or "weight" and start pumping. The upward motion will drive a wheel that spins freely when there is no "weight" being lifted. Now imagine a row of these all connected to the same wheel and every person contributes to the same generator. Somebody really needs to do this!!!!
Good motivational tool for people to exercise although i dont see the use... the money spent on converting rowing/bike machines into usable electricity might as well as be used for solar panels
i saw a tv show about it. iirc the guy was making gym equipment outof junk, and his next step that he was just starting was to actually supplement the energy the gym used to power it's treadmills - by harvesting energy generated by the bikes.
Rocketboom should have taken more science in school. Here's why:
Someone like Lance Armostrong can produce a max of half horse power, which translates into around 370W. That's enough to power around 20 flourescent light bulbs.
Sounds a lot, but when you take into account that not everyone is as strong as Lance, that not everyone can sustain such power for a long time and the power required to light the gym... well, it just isn't enough.
like a year ago i told this idea to all my friends and everyone thinks i'm an idiot. i even though of how you can make a mechine that makes energy from exercises like dung bells and everything.
I wonder if the gym could produce enough electricity to pay for itself. If people didn't have to pay to use this gym I would see it becoming feasible.
@bugilt Or if you could plug your car in to charge it up then ,power your house with the excess from the car. Win , first humn powered Car and House . sort of
I have had the exakt same idea for a long time...you could also use the energy to press juice or something...in with a couple of oranges, spin a little, and refresh yourself with some freshpressed juice afterwards. :)

or the gyms could just keep all the energy for themselves and then charge people for it like all the electric companies do -.-
MuerteDeAmor 2 years ago
yeah nice, now make it happen. don't forget to patent the idea before its get stolen, but i think you
figured this one out already. so the monthly payings at gyms can get lower.

great idea, would the people take the energy they've created home? or would it be to power the gym?

A fairly good idea, although I've heard it before. But I think that when harvesting the power of the sun is mastered, not much more will be necessary.
(I mean, that would provide MASSIVE amounts of energy, right?)
