  • CRT beats both with ease

  • The reason I feel most graphics designers would use a TN over IPS is because the majority still uses TN, so optimising something for IPS wouldn't make much of a sense, really

  • thumbs up for Alexia !!

  • Which one is which? Put some description.

  • @assemblerx86 IPS on the LEFT

  • @assemblerx86 It's obviously that right one is TN+Film and left is IPS

  • New TN panels have pretty good viewing angles. I sit directly in front of my monitor anyway. For TV, plasma is best. For general PC use TN LCD is best. I wouldn't even bother with IPS unless I was a full-time Photoshop professional and even then, the benefits over modern TN panels is slim.

  • @ComicPenius I hope your next monitor will be a TN panel. It is what you deserve.

  • @schawo2 I use a Dell U2410 IPS at work and it's a laggy, smeary, overrated, overpriced monitor. Sure, it has good viewing angles and the color is fractionally better than the latest TN panels. It can also do Adobe RGB gamut which is useless for 99% of the population.

The IPS zealots are still thinking of TN panels from 5 years ago. The game has changed dramatically since then - even in the last year.

  • @ComicPenius Then you shouldn't use a monitor designed for professional use use at home, and fight with the WGC problems and slow response times. But IPS is not only the U2410. There is the U2412M, which is a std gamut, very fast IPS with measured zero input lag compared to CRT, TN-fast response times, and twice the contrast of U2410 for less than half price of the U2410. Or you can think about the U2312HM as well, which is a IPS monitor for home use for less then one third of the U2410 price.

  • @schawo2 Cool. As soon as they release a 120Hz version, I'll be interested....and I barely ever play games.

  • >2011

    >using tiny screen like fucking poor peasant

  • Pfft...My TN panel looks alot better than yours...

  • In case the video title is meant to lump them together all LCD types use thin film transistors.

  • @LFCTraynor Depends on the type of game. TN screens respond faster so there is less ghosting, good for competitive FPS's and the like. IPS and VA panels offer better colors at the cost of responsiveness. With TN panels being cheaper anyway they are generally preferred for games. Also don't confuse responsiveness with input lag.

  • This is an extreme example. My new TN LCD is FAR better at viewing angles than the display here.

  • I have Samsung p2370 and it's not that bad monitor at all, but it is "slow" a bit. It seems that TN monitor in this vid is extremely bad.

  • Now THAT is good music :D

  • Do IPS monitors have the best picture? What about compared to AFFS, S-PVA, P-MVA, or AVS?

  • Any one knows were i can find the Wallpaper shown in this video ?

  • It's simple. Once you've seen a properly calibrated IPS panel, most TN's look like crap.

  • hello thank you for the video ... i wonder what or were can i find the Wallpaper you have when you move its kinda like in 3D lol

  • which brand and make are these two monitors?

  • when i first saw this video i said....the tn monitor is not callibrated...after buying the dell 2311 i ve put it next to my callibrated samsung 2333hd and what i saw is what you see in this video.

  • @LordAmbitious - IPS is old as well. TN is cheaper and "the market" likes cheap. Even some IPS panels coming into "the market" are e-IPS: A 6-bit technology that, combined with temporal dithering, still renders a display more reliable than any piece of TN. Still, why 6-bit panels of any type are tarted up with temporal dithering are being sold instead of just selling proper 8-bit panels to begin with...

  • So, which one is which?

  • @GoaTseTung

The IPS monitor is the one that isn't washed out on the left.

  • @DawkinsForWeAreMany ....listen, the majority of the world uses TN panels, it's winning. nuff said. its technology praised by graphic designers, or anyone doing professional photography for its use of color accuracy. TN FTW! you can't argue specs.

  • @iamchorre Graphic designers praise tn panels? you nuts? lol I work in that area and let me tell you this; No one, I say again, NO ONE uses tn panel monitors in professional computer/art/design world. Doesn't matter whether your illustrator, photographer, or graphic designer, NO ARTIST WITH A SANE MIND WOULD USE TN PANEL MONITOR.

  • @rottenapplese - 100% agreed. Especially larger monitors (even 20"), color shift is a huge problem. Web search "Lagom lcd calibrate" and there is a great site that spells out all the details.

  • @iamchorre

What a bullshit! are you kidding?

i am a graphicdesigner and photographer and every TN panel is rubbish compared to IPS/PVA! i owned also some TNs in the past..

thats the reason why TN screens are so cheap...and cheap screens are used by the majority of the world. because they are cheap :D

don´t know if youre just kidding or maybe a bit confused??

  • @iamchorre either u are fucking stupid or u just trying to be a troll..

  • @iamchorre - somebody once said, "50 million smokers can't be wrong!" as well.

IPS quality is more accurate - TN has its place, but not where color or viewing angle are important. Don't believe me? Settle for a TN-based 40" television set. I saw one on sale recently, but $600 is no "one time special" when - looking at it from a horizontal angle - the royal blue turns into an amethyst purple gradient.

  • @iamchorre Yeah, and the specs are much higher for the (S)IPS monitors. What a dumb troll, seriously...

  • @cMaXeJIJIo listen, viewing angles and specs don't really matter. who in their right mind is going to work on a project at 178 degree angle?!!! Nobody! IPS=epic fail. TN FTW! i'm a graphic designer btw and we all use tn panels.

  • @iamchorre Friend, you can stop trolling now:

1). Your arguments(if they can be called arguments at all) are a joke. Not a very funny one at that.

2). You are trying to prove a point on a subject that you clearly have a very vague idea of.

3). Saying you are "authoritative" on this matter(a graphics designer by trade, in this case)+point number 2(having a vague idea on the subject being discussed)=YOU`RE 13 YEARS OLD, TOPS! :))))))

  • @cMaXeJIJIo ok listen, the majority of graphic designers use tn panels. all of my friends do. how? we all use macbook pros. if ips were really that good and specs show that tn is still far superior, then macbooks would at least use e-ips but they dont. TN FTW!

  • @iamchorre No, it`s because: a). macbooks would be even more ridiculously overpriced; b).(more importantly) u can`t even fit an ips matrix into a notebook with all the underlying hardware, lamps etc+they emanate a lot of heat :). Not only would a notebook be heavier and hotter-it would be so much more expensive, which, sorta(especially, because of the former two points) defeats the whole purpose of a notebook :) But no, if u like to troll, by all means-continue with your ridiculous arguments! :)

  • @iamchorre

Are you a troll? TN ftw? Are you serious? "runs head into a wall" just beacause your macbook pro uses TN it doesn't mean that TN panel is the best... there are newer apple screens with ips :)

  • what song is that?

  • all you guys suck. TN panels are the best for everything even for graphic design and autocad work. TN beats IPS. nuff said.

  • @iamchorre LOLOLOLOL!!!!!

  • @iamchorre it was a joke right?

  • @63Jax ...yup, just want people to argue and fight on here. so im starting stuff. TN for the win! TN-1 IPS-0. if you think about it, IPS is inferior technology compared to TN.

  • I just purchased an IPS I am moving big screen and to the 1080p and damn the comparison seems promising. Also whats the name of this song love it :D

  • You guys keep talking about how superior CRT is over LCD.. And you are correct.. But who cares since looking at a LCD panel is 100x easier on the eyes... CRT panels emit a really high amount of radiation .. and if I game on one for more than a couple hours.. My eyes get bloodshot red.. and i need to take a break... Funny how no one mentions that as a con to CRT . However I have a 30 inch s-ips panel and I LOVE IT.. I just wish it could produce better blacks.

  • I know it's too irrelevant But anybody knows the name of the theme song? It's beautiful!

  • What the hell? That TN-panel really sucks. Mine doeesn't look as washed out as that.

  • IPS compared to TN, there is no comparsion, IPS is a far better panel, period.

  • Hello, I see that viewing angels are just great, but how do you like watchnig movies on your Dell?

  • IPS is the top of the line of LCD monitors.

  • I am not going to be facing my monitor at such an angle and I like the faster response time for the TN because I am a gamer. I would like to have an IPS monitor that is LED back lit with a 120hz refresh rate so I can play in 3D. If anyone can find this monitor for me, please give me the name of the monitor :)

  • @TearsOfWar1 ive been looking for something along these lines as well, seems like there isnt much out there with these specs. Some of the Dell's have nihg refresh rates but not enough for 3D, like 85hz

  • If viewing angle isnt an issue for you, which one is better? There is a new Dell U2311H UltraSharp with a 8ms response time 1920x1080 resolution for around 239 dollars (with a coupon). I'm very confused as to if I should buy this, I do casual gaming (WoW and RTS games) and want to watch Blu-Ray movies. The viewing angle isn't an issue for me cause I'll be the only one sitting directly in front of the monitor.

  • @BetterDayz19 Forgot to say the U2311H is an e-IPS

  • Depends on what was stated as the viewing angle of this TN display? You have specified nothing.

  • I take it back.. any TN sux compared to IPS... good video!!

  • @prabhatkaushik: What would that change? Most specs, including viewing angles (besides most obvious ones; response time & dynamic contrast ratio) are bullshit. That's is the sad state of current monitor market.

Especially viewing angles and response times are dangerous examples. The standars have been re-specified so that manufacturers can have better numbers, while technology has remained the same.

  • @FormulaOneSpy i already took my words back ;)... saw it for myself, IPS is waaaay better. n i agree those specs are overstated... i hate that dynamic contrast ratio figure, kinda like that PMPO shit they used to give for audio systems years back...

  • oh :D

  • @FormulaOneSpy there is nothing sad about that... it's business. I have spent the whole weekend reading technical sheets and everything else to find my perfect monitor... which I havent found yet, and anybody who is fooled by the box, or stops their comparison there deserves their crappy monitor

  • Business yes, but there are couple of extraordinary things in this business. Every problem is more or less connected to the fact that there is no real competition in the consumer panel market. LG is the largest manufacturer. Then there is Samsung but it only makes PVA panels. Rest are more or less minor manufacturers.

For example color tinting problems on IPS panels are direct result of this. No one else makes IPS panels anyway, so why LG should improve their quality control.

  • IPS 6:10 ratio over TN 6:9 ratio all they baby!

  • How many people actually view their monitor from all the angles you showed in your video? If people are anal about viewing angles and being able to play a game while sitting behind their monitor then go ahead and spend 5x more to get an IPS. I'll settle for a solid $250 TN panel.

  • Watching movies from the couch and TN goes very dark. So yeah (vertical) angles do matter.

  • Hey, if you use your monitor to also watch TV then by all means spend 5x more for your IPS monitor. You'd be better off paying for a 37" or higher HDTV LCD that has an IPS panel than buying a 24" IPS monitor for $600.

  • I you miss the point. Obviously no one watches the monitor from this kind of angles in real use. But the viewing angle problem of TN technolog is always present. Even when viewing from optimal angle, the colours are not even. Imagine photoshopping when moving your head 5 centimeters completely changes the colors.

    See this video: watch?v=z0F6v2WSsrI

  • Are you really serious? There is alwas an angle too the screens edges, if you change the position of your head with 5-10 inches a couple of times you will se that! And also, the Dell 2209WA is very cheap, I don't know the price where you live but here in sweden it's priced maybe 0-50$ more than a TN. Which is a bargain! You might whanna try a IPS out, preferably besides a tn, just like in the movie. You will see a great difference, if not, u'r blinde!

  • TN has backlight bleed and stupid uneven image which ruins movies.

  • Put a good Samsung TN panel next to it and you'd be suprised how good the viewing angles are.

  • @wcub4: It would still show a clear difference.

Obviously everytime this TN vs. IPS debait comes up, someone says "well you don't watch the monitor from this weird angle", but of course that's not the actual point. Point is how the colours shift when even slightly moving your head.

  • If I'm going to replace my panel, which one is good? I was thinking of buying a LG flatron 30 inch IPS panel. Has only 5 ms of latency and 110 W of power consumption. I don't mind if it's expensive since I don't plan on upgrading my display ever 3 years, it should last a while.

( I got a 24 inch TN panel, so if i'm upgrading it should be bigger than 24 inch )

  • Comment removed

  • I didn't realize the difference between IPS vs TN, IPS looks so good, I don't understand why the industry is shifting to 16:9 aspect ratio panels (I know for economic reasons) but what I don't get is, that the main interface in any computer is the screen, thus they should be at least decent quality, not like most panels today.

  • LCD's - IPS or TN or VA, cannot match a CRT screen in color reproduction, black levels, viewing angle, and response time. CRT's are still used by many professionals for work. soon we will have SED which is basically a high resolution thin CRT. just as slim as LCD's.

2209wa is nice, but LCD's in general are horrible, even the best ones. sure colors are more 'vibrant' but that doesn't mean 100% accurate color reproduction and viewing angle color changes still exist in IPS.

  • SED will be digital or analog like CRT? When do those come, 2020?

  • SED will most likely be digital input. But CRT in it's own right is purely an analog signal. I hope they don't take until 2020 to become mainstream. SED is already created, it's just most companies want to produce LCD's because they are cheaper to produce and the market thinks they are better than the older technologies, untrue. SED's should also use square rather than round pixels to increase clarity.

  • Well, i think OLED is gonna be the new big thing.... well, i dont think... as soon as they become more cheap they will rape a crt. CRTS are just blurry and u get headache looking at it.

  • OLED isn't anything that special against current panel types, and CRT would still dominate it. it isn't that CRT's are blurry, it is that they use round pixels rather than square ones. this can actually make for a SMOOTHER picture without jaggedness being as apparent if it's high resolution. CRT is old technology, but still vastly superior to LCD, except in SIZE...which is what SED intends to bring.

  • @peoplez129

Yup he is true CRT is more for gamerz,. Low respond time.

1 thing bad about having CRT panel is long exposure will damange ur eyess.

    MY EYESS ITS BURNNNSS

  • @peoplez129

Almost all modern CRTS for years now have used square "Trinitron" type pixels.

I have not seen a round pixel CRT in 20 years.

  • @peoplez129 I insisted on Sony Trinitron CRTs for years. But with prices and space/weight/energy consumption advantages of LCDs, I finally switched last year. I think high end LCDs look pretty good these days.

  • @peoplez129 what happened to SED...seems to have died in the ass

  • @DingoBabyEat

SED is not marketed in favor of profit margins, coupled with the fact they want you to be forced to buy a new LCD every 3-5 years or so. SED would last you for life and give you the most accurate colors possible, along with being flat and high resolution and having a true 180 degree viewing angle.

LCD is actually a step back in visual technology from CRT. The only difference left is lighter weight/smaller size/less power, and that's where SED comes in.

  • Do you even know what oled is? Oled bins ALL current screen techologies in terms of image quality even crt!

  • @jaffyfoxy used in new iphon 4 i think ;D ...

  • @peoplez129

Sorry, but this isn't right at all.

At first OLED is a total different technology. It has a much higher Contrast as CRT-displays more natural colors and even a faster response time as CRTs.

And that CRT is vastly superior to LCD isn't right anymore. An High End S- or E-IPS MVA or PVA Panel with RGB- or WCG-CCFL os better when it comes to Color and sometimes even Contrast and brightness.

  • @peoplez129 crt is bullshit it has twiggling picture temptating it makes your eyes sick thats why smart people invented lcd :)

  • @x33mmm - I'm not sure if it's nostalgia that makes people prefer CRT or sense, but I much prefer LCD technology.

  • @MyRandomReviews of course crt damages eyes the new lcds have very good quality for gaming movies videos :)

  • @peoplez129 Round-pixel CRTs? Are you joking? BTW your revolutionary "SED" is no longer in development :P

  • @peoplez129 No. OLED is a totally different technology. It is not a "panel type" as you say it. It is not like TN vs IPS. It is a whole other thing.

  • to all of you defending the TN panel and saying it's already a crappy one for comparison, you are wrong. This is how the TN panel looks when recorded in dark conditions with a camera. since it's dark there is little to no light pollution changing how you view the image.

you just THINK the TN panel is bad because you're seeing it next to a high quality IPS panel. in essence, seeing the IPS beside the TN makes your perception of TN worse, and rightly so.

  • Regardless, when a solid color can easily be confused for a gradient due to non-absolute perpendicular viewing angles, it's not a good monitor for graphic design of any kind. So no thank you, TN.

  • I have to say though, that TN panel you have there is HORRIBLE!!!, I don't care what anyone says but there are different TN panels, some worse some better (unlike what everyone says, all TN panels look the same which is not true).

I have filmed my Asus Vh222h a few times and it looks a million times better than...except for the angle which is about the same.

For example, the good brands that make TN panels (such as Samsung, LG etc) are WORSE than the lesser known brands, specially in angles!

  • I dont understand why the above comment has -2 points. That TN-monitor in the video is worst one I've ever seen. Nowadays they're much better, but still far behind from IPS/MVA...

  • whats the name of this song?

    it sounds familiar.

  • It seems the TN on the right looks bad even when straight on (see 26 seconds in). So that monitor appears to be bad regardless. The screens seems to be washed out or blown out.

  • Is the DS Lite screen a TN panel. I think it is because when ever I look at it from an angle, I can't see anything.

  • The difference IS huge, especially when viewed from up and down angles. It turns almost black when viewed from below on a TN.

My IPS screen barely shifts color at all.

  • that TN monitor has brightness or contrast to HIGH, that's why viewing angles ar so bad, try to lower them an redo the test.

anyway if that's not the case, it's the worst TN i ever seen

  • All TN panels are like that.

They have poor viewing angles. And if you reduce the brightness or contrast, then you're reducing the fidelity of the screen when viewing it straight on. You lose either way.

  • Comment removed

  • Tn sucks. I'll never buy another TN LCD again. NEVER! Everytime i see a TN, i see crap everywhere.worst colors accuracy, worst view angles i ever seen. LCD TN = GARBAGE.

  • IPS are expensive though

    i got a HP LP2475w its a H-IPS or S-IPS cant remember for £400

    never regretted it though

  • thank u for stating the obvious, now how about lowering the prices for ips ones?

  • The new dell 2209 its a good 22" e-ips lcd with a fair price. Check it out.

  • Hey, is there are a 24'' version of that monitor? because the 22'' only does 1680x1050, and after using 1920x1080 and 1920x1200 I can never go back.

I checked and the price seems to be around $300 for that model which seems alright for it being an IPS panel and actually having pretty good response time (the same as my monitor, perfect on FPS shooters and such).

  • Exactly.

  • Hmm, I figure that the bad viewing angles might hinder others from seeing what you have on your screen. Spartacus approves.

  • Just use a privacy filter :P

  • Bullshit. Angelwise a TN will always be destroyed by a IPS or PVA.

  • play fair my friend callibrate the tn panel...

  • while it's definitely sound advice, it still doesn't change the angle distortion.

  • ALL TN panels are like that, calibrated or not.

The IPS panel doesn't need any special 'calibrating' to produce true color with 178 deg viewing angle.

  • Alot of IPS panels need calibrating; in fact, I'd say that's the first thing you should do with any monitor, regardless of whether it's TN or IPS.

  • Wow, I can't believe how obvious the difference is.

  • I'd like a LP2475W with A-TW polarizer (see the NEC vs LP2475 video here) and LED backlight.

  • is tn more responsive in games then ips on left?

  • TN is more responsive, however with the newer H-IPS panels can be great for gaming. You might want to check out the HP LP2475W. Uses the H-IPS panel, and performed well in the responsiveness test over at tftcentral. Can't beat the price for a IPS panel.

  • oh shit nice! i only hope i could get one of those from best buy or frys! :))

  • tns have the best response times.. id rather worry abt input and output lag tho.. damn! i was really considering tns cuz of the cheapness and response time but the color is just way better w/ other panels.. i wont mind 4-6 ms response time slower but then truth in the products labels are just hard 2 trust sob2 :(
