No, the US was protecting the "democratic" government of the south. The PLA supported the north during the conflict, but later on in the 70's China and Vietnam had a border war and they're still pretty sore with eachother.

Thus, China tried to attack Vietnam in order to make Vietnam regular troops withdraw from Cambodia moving to North to fight with PLA. However, Vietnam didn't do that.
