Tumbleweeds are sometimes referred to as "straw dogs" and we all know that tumbleweed symbolize emptiness/desertion (like in cartoons when a place is deserted a tumbleweed rolls through the scene). Therefore a "straw dog" symbolizes feelings of loneliness.
