if you have the chassis of the car grounded the car itself can act as a sort of faraday cage, protecting it's own electronics. This could possibly work with a modern vehicle, if it is not made of a lot of plastic like cars these days especially if stored in a metal building which has a good ground.
What he is trying to say is that this vehicle has no semiconductors/integrated circuitry required to run the engine. If he had his hood open when the emp struck then there would be a slim possibility of an alternator or solenoid frying. I myself never owned a diesel but is it possible to kick (push) start it?
Not totally true, friend. That wire to the injection pump solenoid must be energized for the pump to inject fuel. If you have no power this engine will not run. Solving that, you could "catch it in gear" by coasting down a hill as long as it's not too cold. BTW you didn't address the glow plugs issue either.
On the plus side almost any flammable liquid will run in here... But don't try gasoline tho.
I have the same engine except in an 85 golf. I have tanken mine through some trails and swamp that 4 x 4's get stuck in but I would personally choose a vehicle with a bit more beef and ground clearance as you might not be driving on smooth roads. If i had to leave it would be in a 89 f350 super duty, 7.3 idi diesel 5 spd. 9,000 lbs (empty) of get out of my way. it is capable of holding 5,000 lbs of water, fuel, food, amo, along with the ability to pull a trailer (maybe with the golf on it).
EMP does not only mean destruction of sensitive electronics, it means, given strong enough field and close range, the frying of wires and the wires need not be in a loop.
@TheShadowrider81 just wondering......so in theory would it be best to have the oldest and most primitive car you could get. I mean would something like a 1965 chevy.......or even better a car with a crank up starter option?
I have done this to my '98 Pug 306 diesel (XUD9). Removed the EGR and took an angle grinder to the immobiliser unit on the stop solenoid! So it now runs like yours on a singe wire from the key switch :) What about the Alternator!?!?!?!?! There is the voltage regulator along with some large power diodes in there....If the worst comes to the worst and the Alternator Fails, the plunger can be removed from the stop solenoid and the car then bump started! :)
If you have an EMP proof vehicle you won't be driving far or for long. Sorry to say someone more powerful than us will ascertain our vehicles within a short period of time for emergency use
Awesome, Emp should not effect and solid state wiring EX: relays, head light, switch's etc... your setup is perfect and because its a diesel you have a ton of fuel options. As for the alt if the engine is not running you will be fine, otherwise they are very easy to rebuild, and you could alwasy swap to a generator or keep a spare voltage controller around
The alternator also contains a set of diodes which will burn out easily, not sure of the bridge rectifier. I wouldn't cost much to throw a few spares in an old disabled microwave oven for protection. I keep spare diodes for my solar panels.
nice car but you won't drive far. 8 million cars will be stalled on all road preventing egress. 8 million people walking will shoot you to get ahold of that running car in hopes of getting back home to their own family. Good idea but you won't get far at all
If your batt. is connected, an E.M.P. blast will fry your starter solenoid. Thus your "E.M.P. proof bug" will fail you. Keep an extra starter solenoid handy if disconnecting ( both cables) from your bug is a hassle. If not, keep them disconnected. It is especially important to understand that ALL of your P.C.M./ T.C.M./B.C.M controlled vehicles will suffer software damage as an E.M.P. occurs, leaving your vehicle retarded; probably unresponsive due to E.M.P. damage at the programmed keychip.
@SuperGozzy These folks, although inspired to help, will through ignorance get themselves and others whom are sincerely interested in surviving, in a heap of trouble. Children and animals are the first to suffer in the hands of good intentions. There is always more to learn. That is true for us as well. But I hear you, friend... They are pretty-damn-dumb.

What about the alternator/generator, starter and battery???

With all the cars stalled everywhere, clogging up the roads, how you gonna go anywhere?
Where you gonna go? No stores will be open cause they couldn't get to work.
It seems like a motorcycle would be a better choice to got to a BOL.

P.S - What happened to your timing belt cover? Don't think that will be damaged by an EMP! ;)

@Thepockets88 Do you realize that solid state electronics are the most easily damaged components of the E2 pulse?
fedtopcop 1 month ago
@fedtopcop
No, pocket does not realize it. Anything conducting current can be destroyed. Just a matter of emp strength.
