I'm guessing they are shooting for infrared because its not that much higher than regular microwaves we use today. But what about winter? I say they need to aim much higher in the Radiation SPectrum and shoot for visible light, or ultraviolet radiation. But what about night time? Well then, the secret lies in the Cosmic Ray Spectrum. These never stop hitting the Earth and they exist in everything and everyone. Now there's the energy source Tesla envisioned for mankind! :D
please look up tesla radiant energy panel, i even made one, i show you how to make it, these guys are making a simple form of this, anyone can make it and connecting it in series or parallel to increase energy, please i made this for you, we can make this now!
As presented this scheme clearly violates the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics. If it worked one would be able to use the same energy over an over, heat to electricity and back to heat after turning a motor or lighting a lamp. It would usher in a new world with new physical laws. How did they ever get funding from the DOE for such a boondoggle?
The problem is they claim that a working system would make energy run uphill. That is, from a high entropy (IR) form to a low entropy (electricity) form without a concomitant increase in the entropy of the universe. For example, start with two blocks of metal both at the same temperature and both in an insulated box then use the apparatus to take the heat from one to make electricity to add heat the other. This cannot happen in our universe.
at no part of the demonstration does it claim to do anything like that. It merely claims to harness infra-red rays in the same way photovoltaic arrays harness the ultraviolet spectrum. It doesnt claim to exude more energy than was put in. The site claims that the technology is 80% efficient which means that there is a 20% loss. It doesnt violate any laws of pysics.
Solar cells trap a bit of free energy while absorbing short wavelength radiation (low entropy) and radiating long wavelength (high entropy). Thus the entropy of the universe increases and the 2nd law is satisfied. In their proposed scheme "waste" heat (high entropy form) is magically converted to usable energy without an increase in overall entropy. This cannot happen energy does not spontaneously flow uphill.
Well, I would have thought the infra-red spectrum would be usable. They claim it does, you claim it doesn't. When the tech comes out in time, If it works, you can either stand back in awe, or return to this comments page to say "I told you so" if it doesn't :)
Are you familiar with the 2nd Law? Simply put, if you put two blocks of metal, both at the same temperature, together heat will not spontaneously flow from one to the other. If it did it would not violate the 1st Law (conservation of energy) but would violate the 2nd. Reread my second post above.
2ndknight, I am well and truly familiar with the second law of thermodynamics. That is why any energy system can never be 100 percent efficient. (Reread my above post) There is no need for an example. But I do not see what that has to do with capturing the suns rays with the infrared spectrum. The infrared spectrum is energy emitted merely on a different spectrum. Nobody said anything about more energy being emitted than was being put in.
This has nothing to do with efficiency. One cannot convert "waste" heat (high entropy) to usable energy (low entropy) with no gradient. An engine has to work with an entropy gradient. Their hypothetical system supposedly would take in infrared photons and generate electricity without radiating photons of longer wavelength. It conceivably could work using coherent (low entropy) laser radiation but not incoherent black body radiation. One simply cannot make energy run uphill.
anyone have any updates on this?

@trance183 remember: Anything with a temperature above 0°K (-273°C) emitts infrared light. :)
barrettski189 1 year ago
@barrettski189 Indeed. But there is less infrared during colder temperatures. Why not shoot for an energy source that doesn't have less ever. :)

@trance183 true :)

On a different wavelength, sorry.

If all of these conversions were 100% efficient, that may be true, but they aren't, so loses would eventually reach 100%.

So far, there are no known exceptions to the 2nd law of thermodynamics. I will wager that their proposal will not be the first.
2ndKnight 2 years ago
But If they are receiving any energy from their system then it couldn't be violating any laws. Is it possible that you may have missed something.
