  • Great...!!!! Love this....!! Pity about the visual quality....!

  • you would think that there could be a better quality video of this song ... somewhere ... or ..... do some artistic surgery on it!

  • @lexi3570 I could suggest some surgery as well - if you are interested.........

  • The Cowsills had the best version of this song with their harmonies.

  • Does he has a hairy chest tho?

  • Hilarious! Love these long-haired weirdos.

  • I remember when this was out and all these years later I still have my hair although earlier today I bought (another) box of "Just for Men" - LOL!

  • This song always puts me in a good mood! Good song and also the way they made the video is great!

  • Still looove this song....I was young when it came out...like 10..wooow

  • This is the first record that the group actually played on! Before this, session People did the backing!

  • 240p what is this the 60's? oh wait it was...

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS. rich beautiful and hilarious.

  • Sing this as you apply Rogaine.

  • My gripe is when I'm waiting for a much needed haircut at Supercuts, and yet another guy who looks like he just got a crew cut the day before walks in to get another unessessary trim.

What is up with that ???

Nobody wants to see your clammy white fleshy scalp if you're still able to sprout hair.

  • like the greatful dead!

  • let your freak-flag fly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • "Don't never have to cut it, 'cause it stops by itself." At age 43 I have to say that no truer words have been spoken.

  • 29 baldies must have watched this hahaha

  • their album II by II with Silver thread and golden needles is a great album.

  • I loved the Cowsills when they came out. Saw them at a State Fair in Allentown PA. Excellent show. I still have a booklet that was given to each concert attendee that gave a Cowsill history.

  • as i recall, the cowsills at first were embraced by the counterculture, until they started making those milk commercials. that was the beginning of the end. although i could be wrong. you know what they say...if you can remember, you probably weren't there...

  • @mralvinvalkenheiser MGM records dropped them because they had a drug influence in there records. Where MGM executives came up with that but that is how the Cowsills sort of dropped out of site.

  • This actual video first aired on the TV program "The Wonderful World Of Pizzazz" which aired on NBC Tuesday March 18, 1969 @7:30 pm est

  • @burtiscurtis09 - yes - that information was posted by me 2 years ago in this thread

  • @burtiscurtis09 .... how did you find out that info? ... curious

  • @lexi3570 I saw the advertisement for it in Billboard magazine from 1969

  • this is my favorite version

  • love this group and this song.however got 29 people who like their heads shaved.

  • Oh man! Ive been trying to find out who did this song (this version) since it came out! back then, -NO MTV / VH1- videos, I could never catch the name of the band. I even bought the movie Hair, but was dissapointed when it was not the song of this version.

  • Spring of '69. Drinking beer in the dorm, Nixon on TV, going to protests. Ah....

And I agree about the billiard ball shaved heads!! Enough already!

  • @67rml

In 69, I was listening to Blood Sweat and Tears, the Beatles and the Youngbloods. Among other things. My mom bought me my very first LP album and that started me on the road to collecting albums. By the time I graduated high school, I had amassed a big collection. I wouldn't sell them for any amount of money.

  • God, I wish I was alive during the 1960's; the modern world is just too shallow and artifical for my fancies. Take me away hippie music, you are my escape from reality and the fact that I'm a misplaced groovy chick wearing beaded necklaces around her head, I swear that I'm a reincarnation of a 1960's hippie girl. ♥♥♥ Geez, I loveee this band!!

  • @groovechile68

Wish you could have seen some of these bands in person, hippie chick. It's always good to see someone young who digs this music. Hope you like Zeppelin too. If you're a hippie chick, you like Zeppelin :-)

  • This song led me to the hippie movement...and I completely left.

  • @moluvsage I would too. :(

  • Just so ridiculous. Love it.

  • You're right judewished We need everyone to grow their hair back again. I hate the shaved head look

  • U can have some of mine on my head because I have so much of it(very thick) but the song itself isnt bad at all.I can remember having the record when it came out.

  • This is a surprisingly faithful cover of the theme song of the Broadway musical. If you saw the stage performance (or even the movie) you'll know there wasn't too much difference between how the song was done in the musical and how the Cowsills did it.

  • Good grief....Was that Tiny Tim i saw? Creepy dude!

  • The Cowsills did SUCH a tremendous job on this !!!

  • Nominated and now a Hair Guru by my friends[I wasn't redicari to be this but ok]I still love and apprecianriko the Cowsills great work of art Hair.

  • Paul messes up when he sings "spangled". Probably a pretty hard song to lip synch without messing up!

  • All of these years later and this song still sounds so cool. The video is just as good!

  • Can we bring the hippie hair back. If I see one more shaved head I will scream!!!

  • @judewishedhimselfout They had shaved heads back in them thar days: see "Spirit" album cover. But there just waren't as many of them. & Certainly no one thought a special set of rights went along with 'em; not like today when everyone that don't wipe properly is "disabled" or a "minority" & merits entitlements, rights, special needs, & a prime-time cable show. & That's from the anti-gov., Christian "conservative" side!

  • @judewishedhimselfout check out this guy for your hair needs watch?v=XnABRPS37hk

  • @judewishedhimselfout Dont bring it back their haircuts are scary and ugly brrr.

  • @judewishedhimselfout I'm with you 100%! Are they too lazy to take care of real hair? I miss long hair or even sort of long.

  • Hillarious. Great song.

  • I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THIS WAS BEST OF ALL THE SONGS THEY RECORDED. TO BAD THEY DIDN'T DO MORE.

  • Sad that two members of this talented family have perished, one found dead on the streets of New Orleans after Katrina, the other recently passed away from emphysema. :(

  • Love it!!!!!!

  • lol, awesome!

  • i think it would be impossible for music to be this good today ,..... unless i can get signed ,... nobody knows what good is now ,...we have a problem today ; People think that Green Day is good. We're fucking backwards,...

  • I remember that I had always listened to this with my cousins and we would have a BLAST and that was only like 10-12 years ago? LOL cause we loved swinging our hair around like a good head bang and act crazy kid like to it. because we found it that awesome and funny!!

  • Paul Cowsill is so cute!!!

  • This video is hilarious!!

  • If you're a fan of The Cowsills, you'll probably like the fun and free weekly podcast, Echo Valley, which celebrates the great bubblegum music from the 1960's and 1970's! There's Cowsills music almost every week! Give it a try! Just Google "Echo Valley Bubblegum"!

  • I still have this 45 and it's one of my favorites. Nice to see the video. Thanks for posting.

  • This is one of the great songs of the past, I really dig it, Tammy Mast, Your Royal Countess, Savior Healer

And Remember to treat all others KIND AND CARE unless they abuse you some how about their own selfish opinions, think large, Peace

  • This is one of the great songs of the past, I really dig it, Tammy Mast, Your Royal Countess, Savior Healer

  • Is that Bill or Bob singing at the beginning?

  • This is too funny!!!!

  • This was a hilarious song... wish the quality was a little better....

  • Wow his hair.

  • Like, totally groovy man.

  • groovy

  • .... I was born and raised in Rhode Island. I live in So. Calif. now but anyhow I went to high school with ther cousin Joan Cowsil... and they ...out of nowhere came to our auditorium (while this was like #1) and perfomed this with just piano and guitar.... what a treat... Standing Room Only!!!

  • I'm going to see them at "Indian Lake" next weekend!!...How retro is THAT?...Love it!

  • @georgeluvr1 .... Indian Lake Kingstown RI... a party place back in the day.... it was stop off at Indian Lake have a couple puffs or beers or whatever and over the bridge to the Newport Jazz/Pop Festival... the poor youngsters of today don't have a clue what it is like when thousands can gather and have a great time and no one gets raped, banged over their head, their car not broken to, the cops telling you to "slow it down" rather than arresting you..AND GOOD SOUNDS ALL AROUND!!!

  • The Cowsills 2011 Tour; 7/9 Old Field Beach State Park Indian Lake Russells Point, OH; 7/26 Mohegan Sun Casino Uncasville, CT; 7/27 BB Kings Blues Club & Grill New York NY; 9/4 The Cannery Casino Resort Hotel Las Vegas NV; 10/1 The Villages Savannah Center The Villages, FL; 10/2 Solivita Social Club Poinciana FL.

  • I remember listening to this on the day of the moon landing-an overcast, drizzling day here in the Northeast, just as it is today.

  • Trevor40 is right...As cheesy as this might have seemed in '69, it beats the crap out of anything produced today!

  • I think this was make from Glen Campbell good time hour, If not it would be Ed Sullivan Show. I remember even my father thought it was funny, for an old German that say something

  • nice wigs

  • hair love this song brings bacl some good memories or wait i didn't live back then darn i keep forgetin lol although it feels like it!

  • JOEP ...they're grandparents by now and Barry passed in the aftermath of Katrina.

  • It's all fun and games until it falls out.

  • When we wake up to the truth of life, inspired music like this will emerge and flourish again, and all the uninspired crap that people call "music" these days will fade away and be forgotten. Search "Truth Contest" in Google and click the 1st result, then open The Present and read what it says to learn the truth of life.

  • ABSOLUTLY NO DOUBT ABOUT IT...THIS FAMILY WAS MADE TO ENTERTAIN THE WORLD....KEEP ON SINGING YOU GUYS

  • "Newspaper blanket"

    "Newspaper blanket"

    "Newspaper blanket"

    "Newspaper blanket"

  • 24 people have no hair to brag about.

  • now i had heard the song and loved it back when. i had also heard of the group COWSILLS. but i NEVER KNEW THEY WERE ONE IN THE SAME TILL NOW! duuuh, boink! boink! **LOL**

  • It looks and sounds like they have three girls singing. Are two of the "girls" actually two of the brothers?

  • Hair=Peace

  • I heard this on The Simpsons! The Mary Poppins episode when Marge was losing her hair. lol

  • This still is the definitive version of this song.

  • 1:50 reminds me of my uncle in the 60s, lol

  • ...and spagetti 2:20 the cutest thing!

  • I'm surprised the song doesn't mention crabs or lice.

  • They were a bubblegum group who went hippie and psychedelic. Its amazing how some groups changed during the 60s to get a hippie and more "in touch" audience.

  • .... Mamma Cowsill with the wig at the end ... super-duper!!!! -:)

  • I liked the Cowsills. Written off as dumb POP at the time though the composition, production etc at their own hands was as good or better than most other groups then or now.

  • How old was Susan here?

  • @mottledbrain Susan was probably 10 years old during this video. Just guessing since she was born in 1959 and the song was a hit in 1969. She was very entertaining.

  • @raymesquite ....and 'spaghetti'.... love it

  • To:@JessicaRabbit1011 What remember the words are "down to here, down to there, down to were, it's not by it's self, don't ever have to cut it, cause it's not by it's self"

  • I thought of shaving my head, but I have enough scars showing everywhere else to walk around looking like scar head much less skin head. I went through a few decades where i was under the illusion that it was fun to fight or I was worth a damned at it. Now that I'm all crippled up i worry my great grand daughter will kick my ass someday... lol

  • Bring back the hair.... this is not only amazing talent ..... but entertaining.... got to love Hair. AudioHipster Approved

  • HOF

  • Reminds of what we all were thinking at Ft. Ord when we just had our long hair shaved off and were sitting on our respective bunk beds, running our hands over our shaved heads in 1972....

  • I dont think a kid back then could sing the national anthem without the "hair" line.."Oh say can you see my eyes if you can them my hair's to short"..only squares sang it the 'proper way".. We need to go back to this.. ;)

  • if you were a kid like i was in the 60s and had rather conservative parents who force buzz jobs and white wall hair cuts on you then this song was your anthem till the day you could grow your hair as long as you wanted.. My mom would send us to get hair cuts and the barber at first would just butcher us, but over time he began to let it grow longer and longer..Now in my 50s I still can't bring myself to cut my hair more than once every 5 yrs or so just to let my head breath

  • @DrFeelRotten I hear you...I cringe every time I see a picture from that era with my bald shaved head.

  • This is the best version of this song, the Cowsills were awesome, this song made the top 40, I do not know how far up it went though. It was always on the radio back then! Thanks for posting.

  • get a hair cut hippies

  • after wachting this im going to grow my hair long

  • Can anyone tell me which one's which?!?! I know that two members of the group, Bill and Barry Cowsill, passed away and I just want to determine who they were in this video.

  • Is the kid a boy or a girl....its a bit hard to tell...

  • @Malena1m It's a girl. It's the youngest and only girl, Susan Cowsill. :)

  • What a great song and video. It's truly one of the anthems of the Sixties. Protesting the spirit of the times in such a non violent and comical mode. What did people have against long hair in the sixties anyway? Just a rhetorical question. First time that I ever viewed this video. Thanks.

  • When you first heard it, this was an anthem,

    Now it's a plea.

  • this is a good version

  • A great pop song but the video is too late-60's-ish...

  • This is better than any song in 2011!!

  • @trevor40 haha totally agree. it always gets me in the best of moods.

  • @trevor40 I agree, but that aint saying much. The postman pat theme tune is better than chart music

  • totally true !

  • totally true !

  • In the 60's the Cowsills were considered commercial pop garbage and were not taken seriously. Listening to this now, though, knowing they played all their instruments, sang all their parts and even produced this song, their talent really stands out. They deserved more respect than they got back then. Same goes for Tommy James and the Shondells and the Monkees.

  • I can't agree that they were considered pop "garbage." They were as much a part of the culture as any other pop band. Certainly, if you were into Jimi Hendrix, you'd likely frown on them. But in my house, we listened to everything, from Jimi on down (or up, depending). There wasn't the kind of niche programming you have today; then it was top 40, period.

That aside, the lead (name?) always said he wanted (like the Beach Boys) to move in new directions & be taken seriously. Well, I did, anyway.

  • @calvintoronto Well, yeah, that's what I meant. If you were into Cream, Hendrix, etc. then you really didn't bring a Cowsills album into your home, and of course I'm generalizing. Maybe garbage was too harsh a word, but if you were around back then (I assume you were) you must remember that "being commercial" was baaaaaad. And I was around at the time, I didn't read that in a history book ;)

  • @paulybxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hmmm. Well, I was around then, though I was young, around 10. I didn't even know that the Cowsills did this song until I was an adult. I thought it was some "hip" band. And if you put it beside The Rain, the Park...., Hair sounds not at all like a Cowsills song.

I don't think I was old enough to remember the notion of "being commercial" applying to music. I remember that phrase mostly in relation to those who gave into "the man" (though I guess this can include music).

  • @calvintoronto Giving in to "the man" was selling out. Commercial was anything that could be considered "art" being made specifically for the purpose of making money. The only bands that got a pass, as it were, were the Beatles, Stones, Kinks, and maybe one or two others that came during the British Invasion. That's what killed the Monkees among the hipsters back then. Because their songs are actually very good. But they were "commercial". Come one, anybody else old enough to remember the 60's.

  • @paulybxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Back me up about the commercial thing.

  • @paulybxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

how do you know they were considered garbage in the 1960s? it's the good ole politically correct artists who are the bona fide garbage since it is taboo to even question their skill, their sound and their impact.

i'll take cowsills over jimi hendrix any day

  • @The096757 Because I was there, idiot. They were considered teeny bopper music.

  • @paulybxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

AMEN!!!! They were the first family of the 1960s and should have had a lot more commercial and critical success than having to resort to doing commercials for Milk.

  • @paulybxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Right on the nose. Few people know Michael Nesmith was an accomplished writer and musician before joining the Monkees. Just knew him because he was on a TV show. He did NOT like it. The Cowsills sound great because their music was played by them (cannot verify if they wrote their music) and it still sounds great today. Keep telling my kids that Miley Cyrus, etc..... and any form of rap hpefully will be forgotten when they are parents. Tommy James is awesome btw!!

  • @Planktontwo Peter was also an accomplished musician. He could play about every instrument there was. BEFORE the Monkees. Davy had a long history of musical theater way before the Monkkes as well.

  • @paulybxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Does that mean that peice of crap JB is gunna be good in 2020?! I hope not!

  • @paulybxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

You are so right. I love music, especially the kind produced, performed and written by artist who take their trade and treat it with such respect. These kids were extremely talented, I can hardly think of too many today who can take it to this level. The Monkees and Tommy James & The Shondells are also excellent examples of some of the great talent back then. Lots of country groups still perform and play their own instruments as well as rock bands. Others are fading away.

  • @paulybxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Very true. However, back in the 60's practically everyone did that so it was nothing "special". When compared to most of today's main-steam musicians they are much MUCH more talented. Just goes to show you how low our standards have fallen. Love this song!

  • @paulybxxxxxxxxxxxxxx The Windowsills, although a better group, could not match the starpower of the Cowsills. By 1969, they found themselves in the same field of obscurity as the Pigsills, Sheepsills, Christmas Seals and Electric Eels.

  • @paulybxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Hi! I haven't heard this song in many years - I was surpised at how good it is - how good the vocals are. I think they were underappreciated.

  • @paulybxxxxxxxxxxxxxx I went to school wth them and they did get respect they opened at yankee stadium for the Beatle's performed on the Ed Sullivan Show and mgm predicted they would be more popular than the Beatles. But due to miss management it ended sadly.

  • @patsman1112 Who was Miss Management and what did she do to make it end sadly? Did she break up the group like Yoko did to The Beatles?

  • Groovey man

  • "I'm hairy high and low" was on off-color joke. Just shows how unimaginative the censors were that they didn't catch it.

  • The final lyric was changed I guess for TV play...BobCfav posted a live performance with 3 of the original members and they added this missing lyric to it...

They'll be ga-ga at the go-go, when they see me in my toga

My toga made of blond, brilliantined, biblical hair

My hair like Jesus wore it, Hallelujah I adore it

Hallelujah Mary loved her son, why don't my mother love me?

  • @mrcinemajunky Yeah, I remember hearing those lyrics only once, way back when. I thought it was in my mind. Thanks for confirming that I'm not THAT crazy :)

  • Love the song, and video. Wish there was a copy that had better audio/video quality tho. This was apparently uploaded from an old VHS??

  • @yturieow3 Then post a better version.

  • @trance23 LOL! That's telling him! ;-)

  • @trance23 jump on it spanky

  • thanks God I'm not bald

  • @yturieow3 There is a much clearer version on susancowsill's website, click on video and scroll down a bit. You'll see it, much better video quality.

  • Thats wat makes it look original and goes with the times.

  • Now that's some hair!

  • To that incredible Mother and her Son's and Daughter!

    THE ALL ORIGINAL PARTRIDGE FAMILY!!!!

  • "...and are mostly freemasons..."...60's hippies were hardly freemasons, but funny none the less...

  • oh my brings back a lot of memories..NICKSCO..

  • Noon and

    NIGHTY-NIGHT-NIGHT

    !!!!

  • Wonderful video and song. The 60's, what a decade it was. Thanks for the memories!!!!

  • hippies smell very bad and are mostly freemasons.---Francsico Francop

  • Feh. If the Cowsills had been TRULY hip they wouldn't have had to wear those silly wigs. Great song though.

  • this was a time of innocence peace and tranquility , so many songs came from the original broadway production of Hair , 5th dimension, Oliver , cowsills, to name a few , its been 42 years since the play debut on broadway my does time fly

  • this was a time of innocence peace and tranquility , so many songs came from the original broadway production of Hair , 5th dimension, Oliver , cowsills, to name a few

  • Naughty women need to be your wife mworld5.info

  • could someone tell me what they are saying about hair being stuck or something at 2.24?

  • @JessicaRabbit1011 "down to where it stops by itself; don't ever have to cut it, 'cause it stops by itself"

  • Booo look at them sideburns looks like a damn girl,,, Now Johnny Unitas theres a haircut you can set your watch to lol.

  • so this is what the hippies of the 60's were like.

  • At 2:38 is that per chance Tiny Tim, or just a look alike. I think the Partridge Family was based on the Cowsills. Boy, they couldn't even hold a candle to the Cowsills, could they? BTW, I'm 60 now (yeah, I know, I'm getting old) and it was real hard to see the men starting to cut their hair in the 70's. Kind of a drag.

  • @gotch09 I believe you're right, that is Tiny Tim. :) Good eye.

  • @Highland804 And right after Tiny TIm is Jerry Lewis.

  • The best version.

This is a classic that rocks on.

    George Vreeland Hill
