I just finished the series today and the ending ruined my day. Light should've won. He used to be smarter, but then the writers made him dumb. It would have been okay if L was the one that beat Light, but it was stupid Mello and Near. I hate Near so much, he didnt deserve to beat Light. I would have been happier if this episode didn't exist and they ended it last episode leaving it up to our imaginations about what happens. Its not that I like what he did; I was just rooting for the protagonist

If you think about it hard enough, you realize that ryuk can see light's life span so he pretty much knew he was going to die on january 28. :( such a sad ending. i wish it was a longer series! :'( best anime ever!!!!

Poor Light. Even though he did what he did I still feel for him. All he wanted to do was to help the world but he never realized that he can't fight evil with evil. He is such an interesting character to analyze.

i remember the first day this episode was shown nation wide. and in the end...and the next 3 days.....i couldn't sleep, eat, talk, or move around...i just sat outside deppressed at how deathnote ended...

It's a sad story What started out as one school boys dream of a new safe world turned into a deadly game that slowly made Light lose sight of his humanity If you think about it he had no friends. Everyone became a pawn to him and he eventually had no qualms about killing anyone From observing this whole anime I have found that Light became more stupid as time went on for example look at how careful and smart he was when L was after him compared to the decisions he made when N was gunning for him

Alternate Ending:

i think Light should have run outside before he got shot and call Misa for a safehouse. At the safehouse write all the names down on the small piece of paper, so the people (including Near) die. Light got back to the place wear Near died and stole the notebook back.

Don't know if someone agrees with this ending :)

Its not "died anyway" Its- he dies because his name is written on the death note.. Matsuda wounded him, but apparently the bullets didn't hit a main organ/blood vessel, he could've gone on for maybe minutes to hours with his heart faintly working, until he bled to death. Ryuk sped it up. ; P

My favorite character in Death Note is by far Kira/Yagami Light, and after him his rival L.

Hate Near though, if someone should've beaten Kira it should've been L.

This anime was designed to allow one such viewer to use their judgments, or outtakes of the world around them and compare to this to each character in Death Note. Matsuda did basically "lethally wound" him, he would've died eventually- Ryuk just put the cherry on top a bit quicker than he could've.
