America has given us a lot of great jazz musicians. But with all respect, I think there are a couple of famous and great saxophone players outside USA as well. I want to mention the one that always goes his own way, from Norway in Europe – JAN GARBAREK.
I agree, a lot of famous American saxophone players on this list. But there will always be someone missing,,, like Art Porter, this great alto saxophone player who died too early. He didn't get older than Charlie Parker. Then we have the master of rhythm – Maceo Parker, and the mentor of David Sanborn – Hank Crawford. At last I want to mention the one that I’m listing to these days – the master of ballads – Scott Hamilton.

You missed perhaps the greatest of all time "Al Gallodoro",played into his late 90's every weekend in a small club in New York. Played with all the notable big bands, and always played lead alto sax,as well as clarinet, and base sax!!
Check out his web page ,as well as his cds!!!! Has the record for playing the lead clarinet solo for the song "Rahpsody in Blue" of all time,10,000 times!!!!!ya that's ten thousand times.....
I hope to be on this list one day, I play alto sax and I am in first chair in my band class I have been playing for a year and a half, and I'm loving it!
If you're a tenor player, check out Don Wise with the Delbert McClinton Band on songs like "Maybe Someday Baby" and "(Standin' on) Shakey Ground" - others who have influenced me are Lee Allen, Bobby Keys, Boots Randolf, Charlie Barnett, Wayne Shorter, Gato Barbieri, Gerry Mulligan, Paul Desmond,Tower of Power, Grover Washington, somebody stop me.....
This should be listed as famous male saxophonist's. Not a single female listed. Too bad, there are a lot of great female artists that could be highlighted here.

You may not be familiar with the Great Peruvian saxophone player "Julio Mori" he is in realm of his own. Look him up folks a good song to start with is "claro de luna" Let me know how you like it . Cheers!
Oh yes, ........ in a certain way,....... the most important sax player of all times for all saxophonists... Adolphe Sax himself!
People tend to forget that he was an excellent musician himself, allready playing a 3 octave range long before other saxophonists like Sigurd Rasher started thinking about top-tones.
@ABrandsma You're right, another greats are missing, e.g. Sam Butera (tenor) Joe 'Allnitelong' Houston (honking tenor) and Boots Randolphe (tenor) Big Jay McNeely (tenor), Louis Jordan (alto), etc, etc.
A few of the older greats are missing, like Harry Carney (baritone), Adrian Rollini (bass), Trumbauer (C-Melody). In reality they have been more influential compared to several of the newer names in this list, but otherwise nice collection!
What's the saxophone song that goes like this....
Naa nana, naaa nana........ naa nana, naaa nana...... naa nanananana.... na na na na na na na na... and so the same again. It's played in the intro of 2010 Winter Olympics.
That's probably true "GETTINGORANGER". In fact, I don't even know which one he is.
I purposely don't listen to other musicians. Neither do the othe players in my band. We don't want any outside forces to influence our approach. That's why all of our videos are completely original sounding.
He's the guy playing that beautiful sax solo in Night in Tunisia. (the featured piece) Do take the time to listen to it. Just listening means you can appreciate it and not be influenced by it. Yes I agree you need to develop your own style. I will listen to you when I have the time and comment
I listened to the solo and now I'm starting to think I should have practiced more before putting videos on youtube. Maybe I DO need to start listening to other players.
Give me a few weeks to post some new vids before you visit my page. I've got some work to do.
I play sax also and listening to the "old masters" helped me to appreciate what a powerful instrument the sax is, that no one sax is the same, and helped me to "find" the sound I'm happy with. However, I'm still struggling with what my mind tells me I want to play, and what I'm capable of. Lots more practice for me too.
For me are missing 4 great players, James Carter, Brandon Fields, Marc Ruso and Gary Mick. This four guys are excellent players and can't be out of this list.
il start him of with candy dulfer!! but he'll have to look the rest up himself as i dont want to spoil him!!!!!! he will have lots of fun looking them up anyway. ps check out saori yano...... bye bye
Good job but no Gary Bartz, David Murray, Eric Person, Sam Newsome, Oliver Lake, George Adams, Paul Desmond, Dave Liebman? Research each of those guys...they should be on your video. Maybe you should make a part 2...
I waited 'till the end of the video (I realized the names were in alphabetical order by first name)...got to letter z ....and no Zoot Sims!...nevertheless great video...congrats!
