  • you forgot ACE CANNON!!

  • Where are all the women?? D: lol thats not fair...

  • Cornelius Bumpus

  • America has given us a lot of great jazz musicians. But with all respect, I think there are a couple of famous and great saxophone players outside USA as well. I want to mention the one that always goes his own way, from Norway in Europe – JAN GARBAREK.

  • I agree, a lot of famous American saxophone players on this list. But there will always be someone missing,,, like Art Porter, this great alto saxophone player who died too early. He didn't get older than Charlie Parker. Then we have the master of rhythm – Maceo Parker, and the mentor of David Sanborn – Hank Crawford. At last I want to mention the one that I’m listing to these days – the master of ballads – Scott Hamilton.

  • If you're a tenor player, check out Don Wise with the Delbert McClinton Band on songs like "Maybe Someday Baby" and "(Standin' on) Shakey Ground" - others who have influenced me are Lee Allen, Bobby Keys, Boots Randolf, Charlie Barnett, Wayne Shorter, Gato Barbieri, Gerry Mulligan, Paul Desmond,Tower of Power, Grover Washington, somebody stop me.....

  • @jbamado07 He's a real good player! Thanks.

  • What about Dave Liebman?

  • OMG it's ALBERT AYLER not albert tyler man!

  • Oh yes, ........ in a certain way,....... the most important sax player of all times for all saxophonists... Adolphe Sax himself!

People tend to forget that he was an excellent musician himself, allready playing a 3 octave range long before other saxophonists like Sigurd Rasher started thinking about top-tones.

  • @ABrandsma You're right, another greats are missing, e.g. Sam Butera (tenor) Joe 'Allnitelong' Houston (honking tenor) and Boots Randolphe (tenor) Big Jay McNeely (tenor), Louis Jordan (alto), etc, etc.

  • A few of the older greats are missing, like Harry Carney (baritone), Adrian Rollini (bass), Trumbauer (C-Melody). In reality they have been more influential compared to several of the newer names in this list, but otherwise nice collection!

  • Eddie"lockjaw"Davis?????????

  • just was about to say that

  • Comment removed

  • ummmm leroi moore ur missing a very vital person

  • hey there are some very good romanian saxophonists too, like gigi tabacaru, ion buschit, doru taranu, godici, and the legend, nicu anghel "ministeru"

  • More like "night In Amnesia". Hey "nosechairballwetfart", who are all these old dudes? They play in a very outdated style. Get over it, people.

Check out any of my vids for a lesson in MODERN jazz.

  • @number1saxophone Yes, but I bet you could never play that Charlie Parker solo!

  • That's probably true "GETTINGORANGER". In fact, I don't even know which one he is.

I purposely don't listen to other musicians. Neither do the othe players in my band. We don't want any outside forces to influence our approach. That's why all of our videos are completely original sounding.

  • He's the guy playing that beautiful sax solo in Night in Tunisia. (the featured piece) Do take the time to listen to it. Just listening means you can appreciate it and not be influenced by it. Yes I agree you need to develop your own style. I will listen to you when I have the time and comment

  • I listened to the solo and now I'm starting to think I should have practiced more before putting videos on youtube. Maybe I DO need to start listening to other players.

Give me a few weeks to post some new vids before you visit my page. I've got some work to do.

  • I play sax also and listening to the "old masters" helped me to appreciate what a powerful instrument the sax is, that no one sax is the same, and helped me to "find" the sound I'm happy with. However, I'm still struggling with what my mind tells me I want to play, and what I'm capable of. Lots more practice for me too.

  • For me are missing 4 great players, James Carter, Brandon Fields, Marc Ruso and Gary Mick. This four guys are excellent players and can't be out of this list.

  • Where are James Carter and Benny Golson?

  • The picture of Eric Dolphy has him with a bass clarinet...

  • Please add: Chu Berry, Big Al Sears, Joe Thomas and Hal Singer

  • So lets include Bill Clinton! more people know Bill Clinton than Charlie Parker!

  • is the pic at 3:05 reverse ?

  • some of the related vids are gross *cough*kennyg*cough*

  • lmao

  • You left out Harry Carney! :(

  • Great Research!

  • Name of the song is "A Night in Tunisia" which was written by Jon Hendricks (words) and John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie and Frank Paparelli in 1946. It's considered in the early bop style and it was introduced by the Dizzy Gillespie band (Musicraft Records).

Other recordings of note were made by Charlie Parker and Lennie Tristano. In 1981 the song enjoyed a revival of sorts when Chaka Khan included it in her album "What Cha' Gonna Do For Me."

  • name of the song please? :D

  • Wow your missing some big people. Like for instance, what about Benny Golson.

  • Great list, man. Obviously, the comments here contain other possible additions, but I quite enjoy your slide show (as well as one of the greatest Parker solos of all time in the background).

  • where is keny g ; )

  • Where are Hans&Candy Dulfer??

  • Where is Hans Dulfer?!

  • CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!!! i am struggling with my art project :( we are suppose to draw the "interpation of sound" and i chose the alto sax, can someone give me some ideas on how to interparate sax's sound?

  • try google

  • i did. all they was a picture of a saxophone, i need to interparate the sound

  • then...try youtubing it or google 'interpation of sax sound'

  • Don't use google! I'm sure they want an interpretation from you, not someone else. Think! Put on some sax music. Close your eyes. Visualise what you're hearing. Is it sharp? Is it soft? Large or small? What colour? What shape? Distinct or fuzzy? Let your vision of the music develop. Now draw it.

  • You did not show other great Tenor sax players like: Don Menza,Don Trimble And Sal Nestico???

  • i second 'what about maceo parker?'

  • Where's Boots Randolph. Some of these guys couldn't carry his mouthpiece!!

  • You are damn right! One can hear a thousand tunes by other saxmen, and not know who is playing, but you always know when it's Boots! He was the Master! Mullsbrother

  • great

  • What about maceo parker?

  • A lot of Sonny's there. Sonny Rollins is the man!

  • paquito d'rivera???

  • Bless them all. But, no Zoot?????????

  • Well anyone that checks this video out should also look up Eric Alexander. Should definitely nix all the smooth players, dave koz is a alto playing kenny g :(

  • BOOTS RANDOLPH DUDE!

  • Amen to THAT!!!

  • If Johnny Hodges, Ben Webster and Gerry Mulligan and others are there, then where's Harry Carney ?

But thanks for the great list anyway:-)

  • sorry dude, but alberts name is not tayler, it`s ayler

  • where r Courtney Pine & James Carter???

  • Hey, you forgot me. Soon as I learn to blow into the thing that is ...

Nice line-up. Just a couple of people missing.

    Was Dexter in there?

  • yes

  • paquito d rivera is not a saxofonist his instrument is the clarinet

  • No, he's a saxophonist first.

On his Grammy's, he's listed as a saxophonist that plays clarinet.

However, people know him for his Latin Jazz clarinet playing, since he really has no equal in that field.

He's also won the Downbeat award for best Jazz Clarinetist quite a few times.

  • i see,thnks

  • Man, so many names and nevertheless you forget Lucky Thompson.

  • Why dave koz?!?!?!?!

  • ERIC MARIENTHAL
