I just remembered that this Hurricane was so deadly because it wasn't really moving. There weren't any steering currents before it had move to the north.
I was in Honduras back in 1998... this thing was devastating, a vivid proof that hurricanes do kill. Personally, I think Mitch was, is, and will be among the top five most powerful hurricanes ever in the Atlantic.
dont remind me please there are many memories that i dont want to relive. no one should have to go throught an event like that but there i was just a kid of nine years of age watching and listening to those winds and that rain, i was scared and even thou i was with my grandma and brother i thought that god had forsaken us, i saw as people get drag by the raging river of cholutequa days later through the news oh god those were hard times and now living in miami it doesnt make it any better
yes.. it caused more destruction because it passed by central america and then decided to rotate backwards passing all over again!!!.. i was living in Guatemala weather was terrible.. but hurricane Stan was worse i think
it all depends if they hav warning or not,if they hav none, yes it be as deadly as a cane that hits bangladesh, but if they hav wwarnigs, it be less, even less than mitch maybe, if one believes the great can killed more than mitch already.
In terms of damage, Katrina caused a lot more than Mitch. However, the death toll in Katrina was far less than in Mitch. 11-18,000 people killed is INSANE, and that's putting it NICELY.
Agreed, Mitch killed more people than Katrina, Titanic, Pearl Harbor, and the Lisitania, put togerther times 2!
Another way of looking at it is the most deadly ship sinking (a german ship in WW2, can't rember the name off the top of my head), unoffically but likly killed 10,000 or just a little over that.
true but the finall total in both will never be known, if you count the missing from mitch with the number of dead, it outbeats the great hurricane by a thosand.
I miss John Hope, RIP.

It was John Hope that named Camille in '69. It was the name of his daughter. He put in her name as one for a storm that year. Insane.
DillatheDude 3 years ago 3
He suggested that name with no real intention of it being given to a storm as infamous as the storm that ended up getting the name Camille.
jw870206 3 years ago 2
Oh, I wasn't accusing him of anything, I just thought it was an insane coincidence. No way he could have predicted how infamous Camille became.
DillatheDude 3 years ago 2
I think he did it as a graduation present for her.

If the Great Hurricane hit again in this day and age, it would kill 50 to 100,000 people. Scary.
FF3Legend 4 years ago
you're right
HurricaneFreak30336 3 years ago
maybe, imo, it would kill less.

Yes, it was replaced by Matthew for 2004. It was a Tropical Storm that made landfall in Louisiana.

Mitch's damage was about $7 billion I believe, which is incredible for a storm affecting poor countries.

yeah, set hondorus, for exampole, back 50 years.

Only one hurricane in the Atlantic was deadlier than Mitch. The Great Hurricane of 1780 killed over 22,000 people in the eastern Caribbean.
BillBrd1 4 years ago
i think mitch killed more imo
KangaKucha 3 years ago 2
yeah it killed 18,000
Undertaker5712 2 years ago 2
depends, I think if you also inculde the missing as dead, then mitch killed more than the great hurricane.
in the end, we will never know.
KangaKucha 2 years ago

The hurricane that was beat by katrina.
Copper20 4 years ago
Nah, nothing comes close but the Labor Day Hurricane in '35.
twcrockstar51 3 years ago
mitch killed more that labor day did.
KangaKucha 3 years ago 2
Well, the Labor Day Hurricane had 200 mph winds while Mitch had 195 mph winds.
twcrockstar51 3 years ago
185 for mitch, but wind speed does mean much.
KangaKucha 3 years ago
doesnt mean much, excuse me
water imo in a hurricane, does more death and damage than wind, where it be from flooding or strom surge.
KangaKucha 2 years ago
180 mph
Undertaker5712 2 years ago
Mitch is the second-deadliest atlantic hurricane behind the great hurricane of 1780.
