What is Ric Grech doing now and GInger Baker ? They should have been in this band ! Does any guitar player out there know the chords to this song please ?
Eric is in true form here as he breaks out for the second part of the song. He learned his chops well with John Mayall's bluesbreakers, and then Cream. George Harrison had a huge spiritual influence on his pal Eric. George gave him his Strat, that had the sacred words "Hare Krishna" carved into the back of the plate of the guitar
This is one of the most majestic, powerful yet humble songs about the joy of discovering God and His sustaining power. I would love to sing it live, but I'm not sure if I could sing it without getting choked up. It has a very powerful effect on me. A lot of my favorite rock songs are, in fact, sacred songs. Great performance by Clapton, Winwood & company. Thank you!
@BRealBTru WHat are some of your other favorite rock songs that are sacred songs ? I still remember this from when they first released it as the first "super group".
@Gauraonline This song comes first. Then, in no particular order: Awaiting on You All & My Sweet Lord by George Harrison; 40 by U2; Full Force Gale by Van Morrison; Gotta Serve Somebody by Bob Dylan; Jesus Is Just Alright by Doobie Brothers; In My Time of Dying by Led Zeppelin; My Sacrifice by Creed; Redemption Song by Bob Marley; Let It Be by The Beatles; and Wondering Where the Lions Are by Bruce Cockburn. There are many other such songs, but these are my favorites.
Lol. I play guitar for my church youth group's worship. the pastor asked me if I could play Presence of the Lord, I started playing this song. He was talking about a different Presence of the Lord.... He was surprised that a 15 yr old even knew this song. This generation needs music like this. They say music helps them live. No wonder most teens have shitty lives. I listen to this stuff and My life is amazing
Fabuloso amigo! tu música me entusiasma, yo también perdí un gran hijo con tan solo 23 años. Se aproximan días duros para los dos, verdad?...un abrazo..,Jesús:-)
Here's the rest: "From that day until this, I have never failed to pray in the morning, on my knees, asking for help, and at night, to express gratitude for my life and, most of all, for my sobriety. I choose to kneel because I feel I need to humble myself when I pray, and with my ego, this is the most I can do. If you are asking why I do all this, I will tell you … because it works, as simple as that."
For folks below wondering about Clapton's faith. From an article in Christianity Today: "I was in complete despair," Clapton wrote. "In the privacy of my room, I begged for help. I had no notion who I thought I was talking to, I just knew that I had come to the end of my tether … and, getting down on my knees, I surrendered. Within a few days I realized that … I had found a place to turn to, a place I'd always known was there but never really wanted, or needed, to believe in.
Great Song ! Anyone who knows his what his journey in life has been knows it definately now has a spiritual connection even if it didn't when he first wrote it.
Clapton actually wanted Winwood to be in Cream, but he was voted down. My guess is that Jack Bruce didn't want to compete with Winwood's astonishing vocal abilities. Great video.

@pickard72 Just FYI (in case you weren't aware), the "organist", Steve Winwood, wrote this song and originally sang it solo on the Blind Faith record. Just so you know!
Though I am not much of a religious person....this, as with most of EC and Winwood works, is as close to heaven as I will probably ever get. Love it! Thanks for posting.
i saw them in concert last week..they were amazing even though they get older by the minute(which is very sad)but...we must be greatful for the music they made and praise them.......again.....nice job uploader and long live the two of them
Much as I respect Clapton, I think he should have just left the vocals to Winwood cos the man has got the soul in his voice.. Can't help feeling that Clapton was trying to outdo/match Winwood. Well, he needn't have to cos he's god of the guitar. To me, this round goes to Winwood!
I think they were just trying to give the fans a different twist on the song, which is cool. Clapton's voice lends it an aged soulful raggedness that Winwood couldn't do and which works well with the song. Anyway, we get to hear them both so that's the best possible scenario.
I'm a big fan of Winwood and Clapton. It was nice to see Derek Trucks in there, I'm surprised he's modest enough to be playing rhythm when he's the one of the most proficient slide guitarists out there.
WOW Thanks for posting man. This was one of my favorite tunes @ the show. Such soul, such spirit wow wow wow ... consider myself fortunate to have been there.
@ujslost Thanks for throwing derek in the mix. Not a clapton or winwood yet but the boy sure can hang with the best of em. Thanks for appreciating great music my friend
No problem! I love Trucks and Im a huge Allman Brothers Band fan. So Trucks, Clapton, Duane Allman, SRV, Hendrix, and Warren Haynes are some of my favorite guitarist. Especially for electric blues style!
believe it or not this song isn't exactly about God. he wrote it about his new house. the first time he saw it he fell in love with it and he compared it with a spiritual awakening. it's in his autobio.
Clapton is playing his ass off now a days cause I guess he wants to go out with a bang and damn this songs amazing a reallly good versions of these two at Madison Square Garden, its amazing I have it on dvd.
I hope their words are sincere and that they both reached out to their savior for deliverance. If not or if so, beautiful song that always comes into my mind.
as to whether clapton is a christian, i think this should answer the question: the original title of this song was "in the presence of the dark lord".
He wrote the song about getting out of living in London and being away from the policeman who had been making a name for himself arresting rockers, or so I read somewhere. I think the cops name was Filtcher, he was the guy who locked up Jagger and got Lennon I believe. The song was about getting into the country and the house, Hurtwood as another poster mentioned.
One of my favorite Blind Faith songs but Eric's solo here just doesn't hold a candle to the brilliant, inspired solo he did on the studio version. That one can bring tears to my eyes.
I just ran across mention of this in his book. Clapton didn't want to sing it when it originally came out and was instructing Winwood on how to do it. Winwood was ticked at the instruction from Clapton plus he felt you should sing your own song.

Eric Clapton has a lousy voice! Plus if you see him in concert he'll put you to sleep. thank God that Winwood was out on tour with him. Thats what made this tour so special not Clapton but Winwood & Clapton
Went and saw them on Monday in Columbus. Eric played and sang better than I have ever heard recorded or live. His playing was quicker and crisper than ever. One thing bad was he did not relate to the crowd. "Hello" was about it...didnt even introduce the band. A 9.5 out of 10....would go back again right now drove from Butler Pa...Was 10000 times better than what I saw recorded @ MSG...GOD BLESS EC & SW !!!David
He wrote this song when he bought his ranch in England, the house where he recorded the Blind Faith album, lived with Pattie, had endless jam sessions with all the legends you can think of. He named it "Hurtwood". He finally felt solace knowing he accomplished so much by himself. He's pretty much just thanking the lord for his talent.
I think he wrote this song to dedicate of his legendary house that he bought in 1969.. I can't remember the name of the house but he said that on his book.
He said in his book he belongs to no organized religion, but believes in an higher power. This song was written during one of many of his rehab attempts.
I saw him give an interview in which he claimed that he wrote this in the midst of Cream's break up. He said when it was over and the problems were gone that it was like being in the presence of the Lord.
I have heard so many inspirations for this song. I have to wonder at times if Clapton remembers?
actually it was written about his house the hurtwood and how he finnally found a place to live in peace,, and actually im at the part in the book now where he says i went to the lord
Studio version is better. His volumn on the Wha Wha was set too low. Will see him in June in Columbus...Love these guys hate to be a critic !! I blame his tech !!
I love this song but does anyone think the guitar solo is a bit random. It completely changes the tone of the song. Im undecided whether it fits or not.
It doesn't really fit, but Clapton had to put his stamp on this song. If he didn't, then it would have sounded too nice and gospel-like and been purely about Winwood's vocals. Clapton just could not help himself. He had to rock on this song and its his right since he wrote it.
Honestly I don't think the solo is at all random and for me it doesn't change the tone of the song at all. But I have to say I have heard Slowhand do this in concert many times so I am accustomed to this or similar.
Whenever, whereever, I hear Eric sing this song it brings great joy to me...I am so happy for him..his journey has been a struggle....he has found his peace.
Jesus said, As for the person that hears my words but does not keep them. I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it. John 12:47
Surely, the Resurrection band to me has done the best version of this song...sung with true passion, blues and gospel together. Glenn Kaiser is the lead singer...great rendition.
I've been waiting for nearly 7 years to see him live..... And I'm sure as HELL going to the DC one. No shitty seats this time, man. We made that mistake with the Who. They go on sale tomorrow!
¨Heeeeeyyyy This is just in, clapton and winwood are toruing the US again dates: June 10 East Rutherford, NJ June 12 Philadelphia, PA June 13 Washington, DC June 15 Columbus, OH June 17 Chicago, IL June 18 St. Paul, MN June 20 Omaha, NE June 21 Denver, CO June 23 Dallas, TX June 24 Houston, TX June 26 Glendale, AZ June 27 Las Vegas, NV June 29 Oakland, CA June 30 Los Angeles, CA Check out wheres eric for more info.

I think he wrote this song to dedicate of his legendary house that he bought in 1969.. I can't remember the name of the house but he said that on his book.

He wasn't doing heroin at the time this was written, according to his autobiography.

if you read his book he clearly states he isnt

Wah's don't necessarily have volume knobs, but they can reduce the volume slightly.

I hate guitars being called axes no offence, it makes them seem so heavy metalish. My lecturer calls my guitar an axe its just ucchh :(
I have nothing against heavy metal :)
But yer Clapton can sure weld his axe lmao!!!

this song is so amazing yet another amazing tune from the god that is clapton

I agree, but that would by default make Steve Winwood Jesus Christ and Jimi Hendrix the Holy Spirit-completing the Holy Musical Trinity. Amen

I love this song but does anyone think the guitar solo is a bit random. It completely changes the tone of the song. Im undecided whether it fits or not.
naillic101 2 years ago
It doesn't really fit, but Clapton had to put his stamp on this song. If he didn't, then it would have sounded too nice and gospel-like and been purely about Winwood's vocals. Clapton just could not help himself. He had to rock on this song and its his right since he wrote it.

It is an awesome solo. Live version way better than studio version.

Honestly I don't think the solo is at all random and for me it doesn't change the tone of the song at all. But I have to say I have heard Slowhand do this in concert many times so I am accustomed to this or similar.
Thanks for posting this. Just brilliant!

This entire concert is amazing to see and listen to. One of Clapton's finest hours... And Jeff Beck's... And Steve Winwood's... etc.
