Motown being an independent label could only go so far. Ricks drug use didn't help.

@Duqswan Good point about MTV, it makes me realise that I got to stop watching programmes like th Xfactor (even if its just for comedy more that anything else), if music made like this gets more common then we will loose more talent - original talent like Rick James, Teena Marie, MJ, Luther Vandross ... etc, etc, etc and not just in RnB but other music genres too; these TV machines do nothing to preserve and promote real talent...

TOGETHER FOREVER NOW.. Fukn Legends Str8 Gone. They could sing they AZZ OFF!. I first saw Rick & Teeina in Washington, DC back in the day. Rick sang his part and this lil white girl came on stage with a fukn tee shirt and jeans, hair all stragly and wet lookin. And when she opened her fukn mouth...IT BLEW MY HIGH!!!! @FOOTS8172 I do believe Rick used Miguel, and others, only for the video, like a prop, lip-syncing only. Like a lot of other artists do for "video-sake". Perfect example of Miguel's non-singing: Remember the song by Dan Hartman: "I Can Dream About You"? Well, Dan Hartman sang it, that is his song, those are his vocals, however, in the video we see Stoney Jackson performing with his lip synchronization as well. Stoney never sang either. I hope this clears any matters up.

@Duqswan Rick was fading at this point. This was his last hit record in the 80s. He and Teddy spearheaded the black pop crossover. At the time of Ricks chart blowup, MTV would not play his videos. If they would have he ould have been bigger. He openly criticized them and got blackballed. He woulda blew up before MJ Prince and everyone else. Motown being an independent label could only go so far. Ricks drug use didn't help.

man, hard to tell if Prince was copying Rick or vice versa. The band looks just like the Revolution. I just know that Rick loathed Prince.
I read some story today about how Rick stole all Prince's gear at the end of their tour, made the record 'Street Sounds', then a few months later, mailed it all back to Prince with a note that said, "Thanks, Rick". Haha! You couldn't get away with that these days!
