Windwood, Alan Price and Garth Hudson the only keyboard players I could ever listen to without falling asleep... A valuable object lesson in the use of stops
Dont you just love an epiphany? I remember when this song came out so I have been listening to steve for "awhile" through many an incarnation....john barleycorn was huge when I was in high school. I enjoyed his work but you know nothing clicked. Then SEA OF JOY came on the car radio the other night and the light bulb finally went off over my head. The guy is astonishing to say the least. better to be late to the winwood party than to never arrive at all.
Just have to point out that, during the 60's in the US, most teenage rock/dance TV shows had popular groups lip-synching to their 45 singles. I'm so glad to find performances from Europe and Japan that prove that these bands were working live bands, and not studio fabrications. Side note: In 1972 The Midnight Special show in America would re-establish live performances of pop/rock/soul groups in the US, along with new important comedians.
@Joeinaloha "Think that's a Hammond organ running through a couple Leslie speakers.
I once played with a garage style band (Church basement) and a friend had that set-up. Speakers would spin and give a neat effect."
No Leslie used in here, only the internal vibrato settings of his Hammond (H-100, I think). Sounds sometimes similar to a Leslie (Rotary) speaker and to my knowledge some or all the vibratos where made to replace the leslie, which didn't work.
He wrote this song when he was 17,and sounded like a 40 year old black man.One of the best songs of that decade, and that includes the Beatles, the Stones, the Kinks, and anyone else.
@Chetwynds12 i don't know what a "wanker" is, (stupid English, learn to speak you're own language already!) but Paul McCartney is one of the most talented men ever and don't you dare talk bad about him again, or else, got it?
@joro2000 dude don't even talk to me about John Lennon, i am the biggest Beatles fan ever, John died the year i graduated High School, i've been playing guitar for thirty years or more, all i'm trying to say is there are alot of talented people but if you try to dwindle it down to the most talented, look at the facts Paul and Steve are the most copied of all the artists back then
How old was Steve Winwood when he belted out this song? He looks about 16...but sounds like he's 45 and smoked a pack a day! Amazing performance on vocals and the Hammond organ. And he looks like he's having a good ol' time too!
for those of you who were born to late. i am proud to say that i attended the winsor jazz festival when music festivals were on the advent. i am reasonbly sure that steve wont be vey offended. he was about 17. i might have been 18. who,s counting. he could hardly stand, or it might have been me. i watched him intently playing his baby grand and guitars. he couldnae put a finger wrong. brittish music is indebted to that man. best thing that ever happened to spencer dav wits his name. thanks steve
@willwelsh816 According to WIKI, Winwood was able to purchase a B-3 from the proceeds of Spencer-Davis' first single. Whether he travelled with it, I don't know, but he owned one of the real thing.
@AMA935 I'm willing to bet that in the 1960s and 1970s there were just as many awful, no-talent, money-hungry musicians as there are in 2011. Remember disco?

Oh NO NO NO! I was wrong, it's a Hammond M-100 of course, because of the smaller manuals (2 x 44 keys).
In some moments, it looks like it had 2 x 69 keys, which made me think it was a H-100, but in another video of the same session I saw I was wrong.
God will send me in hell for telling untruth!

deblong56 4 months ago
@deblong56
It's definitly not a B-3, because of the white toggle lever switches, which aren't on any B-3. To my knowledge it must be a H-100.
And he does not use a Leslie, it's only the internal vibrato settings of the Hammond.
