They were excellent during 68 - 73, they played psychedelic blues of the best kind.. At the beatles level if you ask me. Like many other brit bands they didn't make it to famous when they were at their best.. same goes for Savoy Brown
Great stuff. Peter Cruickshank was/is one of the premiere riff masters of all time. *Thank Christ for the Bomb* still is a fine "peace" song. Too bad we've lost the will to use it again against the evil that exists today!
who exactly would it be useful to use it against? or do you think that the evil that exists today is all gathered in one nukeable sized area, so we can cleanly remove it without ever becoming the evil ourselves, or is a bit of colateral damage a reasonable price to pay in these circumstances, after all they're not like us ae they?
there playing in sheffield on Fri 13th July 07 ! cant wait. The Groundhogs with Tony McPhee are ace and so un 'rock n roll'. They are really part of the old 'freak' scene along with Hawkwind? / Pink Fairies/ early STRAY and so on, but ( and its an important but) their heart in the blues !
i first heard them around 1985 and they just destroyed me, who will save the world is just insane! the grey maze is just too much! check out julian cope's site he speaks about the groundhogs a lot also lots of other cool stuff.
Space blues, 40 years young. Tony is one of the hottest innovative blues style guitarists with some pretty wacky and wild lead breaks. Just beautiful. Long live Tony, the band...and not to forget Joanna D. Yay :)
This track came off 'The Hogs on the Road' album. The clips are a compilation of home movies shot by the band during that particular tour of Europe. It is the McPhee, Dave Anderson (Hawkwind, Amun Duul, bass) Mick Jones (currently touring with Chicken Shack and John Mayall, Drums. The original line up of McPhee, Cruickshank and Pustelnik is the main body of the live concert on our DVD 60/40 Split.
The band reformed 3 years ago and we were lucky enough to capture them for posterity.
at last a piece of groundhogs even if it is spoilt, track origionally on blues obituary way back in 69 i think. How is it theres so little around when they have been going for so long, ive been a fan since 68 especially the origional line-up of mcphee, cruickshank and pustlenik

Anyone remember Tony on the Lou Rawls show in the mid 70s - he sang Muddy Waters - love to see that one again.

Still gotta love the groundhogs. Split still sounds fantastic, especially if you've got the flu.

Split has some of the most otherworldly weird guitar playing in rock ever, doesn't sound human.

Pity about the quality but nevermind, Tony TS McPhee is the main man. Split & Thank Christ For The Bomb, two of the best.
