@FlintPublic Bless you for this information. I am much obliged to you. Although I am not of the 30's, 40's or 50's
generation, I was raise on classic movies. I my opinion they are superior in acting & inquality. I once was interested in being a Director, but was talked out of it. Anyway I however can think of only a few actors in my generation that can messure up very close. Happy New Year & Peace be with you.
@FlintPublic So nice to hear from you again, my friend. Happy New year to you & your family. When I think of my
life as a whole, I would have to say even with the rotten, my life has turned out pretty well. I've had some really
great experiences. My 10th grade high school teacher told me many times "Life is what we make it." I try to live up to her words & I try to teach others the same. God Bless you in all that you try to do. See you around You Tube.Keeping you on my You Tube prayer list.
Quite frankly, I think it's a disgrace that the best version we have of this film is what others have posted to YouTube. No knock on YouTube at all, but I for one am sick and tired of public domain recreations on bad DVDs.
Where is Criterion when we really need them? Did they jump off a roof, too?
Capra had a very populist mindset, but one that seems to separate itself from the government. As a conservative libertarian that's something I can really get behind - individuals should be populist and the government should stay out of their way.
@XBGJDKE This movie is what I was raised to see America as. ...This CIA, Drugs for Guns, and overthrowing govenrments and Kennedy Assassinations and Racial shit, all must have come from outside ..... only outsiders would bring the whole country down for their own gain. NAZIs are from the outside. Frank Capra hated Nazis....I think Nazi's have taken control of our government.
@kellythesinger : If American Nazis were in our government, you'd hardly notice your taxes, gas would be 25 cents a gallon, t.v. and motion pictures would be worth watching, Americans would be LOVED worldwide, unemployment would be almost non-existent, hospitals would be clean and efficient and high-speed Internet would be 5 to 10 dollars a month. Our present crop of "would-be" Nazis aren't doing so well.
@buzzclick500 What the fudge? America's superiority complex and racism doesn't need any help from "outsider nazis" to be destructive to individuals, communities, countries, all things good in the world. Including high-speed internet?
@FlintPublic : The point I was trying to make is that the German Nazis were very efficient and productive in their service to their nation. Until we interfered, things were going very well there. I don't subscribe to popular propaganda on that subject, because I know who's who and what's what.
@FlintPublic : A good friend once told me that people who talk numbers and "facts" as a mantra are not to be trusted. I've discovered this information to be true and helpful. I know what I know.
@buzzclick500 Our present crop of leaders are doing the bidding of Fascist thinking
Bankers and Intelligence people. they deliberately want to bring USA down.
a Totalitarian American Government run by NeoNazis would not be as you describe.... I believe our Constitution, Bill of Rights, and the way of life allowed by these documents as depicted in "Meet John Doe", is exactly what Nazis Hate, and want to destroy. The bank bail ousaved nazis. The oil spill
@mistyclontz : That's because your CONCEPT of Nazi behavior has been conditioned into you by tax-funded public education and the popular "news" media, and you've CHOSEN to believe everything they've told you. You've given up control of your own mind for the sake of comfort, convenience and "getting along by going along." Your mind, your responsibility, your fault. Simple mathematics.
@mistyclontz : When we stop thinking of our national public service staff(government)as "leaders" and start seeing them as what they actually are(servants),we'll "blow the carbon out of the cylinders" and get moving again as a nation. In America, WE'RE the leaders. We just forgot for a while--77 years.
I think Frank Capra was rolling over in his grave when McCain/Palin referred to this movie as part of their campaign. Capra and this movie are so against what Neo-Cons like them stand for.
Palin couldn't find her own ass with both hands. This film is Capra's real masterpiece. Because it is one of the first and most important examinations of American Facism.
D. B. Norton = Dick Cheney. And anyone who can't see it needs to go down for another drink with James Gleason at Jim's Bar.
Palin can only robot her way through a script until she mercifully disappears. At least John Doe wouldn't, and couldn't, when it was all said and done.
You betcha! I find it not only ironic, but worrisome for America, that an idiot like Palin, who has no idea what this is about, would claim it as her own.
At least we can be confident that Stanwyck would kick Palin's ass to hell.
You got it, brother. (Or sister, if I got mixed up.)
To hear that blithering idiot Palin or Joe the [fill in any name or tag you want] to claim this as his or her own is more of an insult than I can possibly endure.
Imagine either of them putting up with a lecture from James Gleason at Joe's Bar.
Neither of those jokers knows what a lighthouse is.
@egogo816 : I'm really embarrassed that I can't stop trying to look at her butt. The studio & Frank Capra knew exactly what they were doing. Like it or not, SEX SELLS, but in this case, it seems to validate itself. She really was a fabulous actress. I liked her in the t.v. show "Big Valley", too.
NO! John Doe would not expect charity to be handled by the government. The John Doe ideal is that YOU help the little guy get ahead. The movie is about Christian principles, not federalist principles. Listen closely in the final protion of the movie "...the first John Doe-- two thousand years...". (Okay guys I wrote this in such a way not to give ny spoilers, enjoy this classic guys!)
Christianity are not fully compatible with Socialist principles, as with socialism ppl are still expecting the government to handle much work expected of the individual. The responsibility is in the hands of the individual to do charity no matter what spending program the government has.
Wrong. Charity is suggests predetermined superiority and engaging in a behavior that is somehow unnatural, if not extraordinary. Being your brother's keeper is an ongoing moral duty, yes - a "responsibility" that is yours and mine. How a Christian who believes in charity can call that being "sattled" is quite disappointing. Walk the talk.
@FlintPublic : It is not in any government's interest to be charitable. That's why we have wars. Before socialism, individuals gave money and resources for orphanages, workhouses and the like. Some of our most highly regarded people of accomplishment rose up through that system of seemingly hit-or-miss generosity. Government guards GOVERNMENT'S interests; no others need apply.
@notademoc : Thomas Paine says that government represents the evil part of us, to be watched and used only when a serious need arises to use it--like when a calm, friendly, sober and opened minded person gets confronted with a hostile situation which can only be handled with outside-the-lines force. We've mis-understood our relationship to our government, and while that's not a sin in itself, it's our chance to learn and act.
Sarah Palin and Joe Nobody are nothing but thieves, who know absolutely nothing yet steal just like DB Norton did.
Babs and Coop would have kicked Palin's into outer space. And Capra would have added the final bonus.

Loved this movie ever since I could remember. Barbra Stanwyck (one of my fav) &
Gary Cooper (one of my fav) are fantastic! I especially adore the ending. One of the
best endings ever. By the way, When did Barbra pass away? I don't remember hearing
about it.

@outerspaceoutpost Thanks for the comment. Barbara Stanwyck passed away January 20, 1990 at the age of 83.

@FlintPublic My dear friend, you are so sweet. I thank you. I'm still interested in directing. I did have an opportunity
filming once in a cinema class I once had back when I was in high school at a local park. I was crazy about
Alfed Hitchcock back then & I filmed a 35 ml suspence movie. As much as I still love it, I've taken a new direction.
the movie biz has changed to much for my liking. I'm a writer now & who knows maybe some day I'll write a movie
script if God leads me into it. Peace!

Best Christmas Movie of All Time.
Better than Its a Wonderful Life.
Because it is about a bum baseball player, "a Regular Joe" and not a banker.

And I don't mean at all to criticize those who have posted this to YouTube for us. It is Frank Capra's greatest film, for better or worse.
I just want the money men to remake this movies as it should be, and then let us judge for ourselves. Athough I have my opinion.
