Will You Look At That, OMG - Blade Fold Works....!
But I would hate the be the one responsible for this A/C in about another 10 years, after a few thousand Flight Hours, Tons of Saltwater, and Getting Rode Hard and put away wet.... Getting those blades to fold on the fantail, at O-Dark-30, with 60 Knots of wind whipping across the deck, 20-degree Rolls, being in "Darken-Ship," Having to use those shitty navy flashlites and the Air Boss Yelling at you to get that thing off the deck...
Not practical since it's rather expensive to build, it's quite fast and not good unless you have experience combat pilots, but it's not that good for dogfighting since most planes in use today for A-T-A combat are jetfighters and significantly faster. however it can drop a payload of bombs.
@GameReviewer1987 what are you talking about? this is aircraft is designed for transport... and it doesnt have any hardpoints for bombs. dogfighting? are you kidding me? haha idiot.
Glad I'm avi, lol. You can keep the speed handles job. For all of it's trials and tribulations, the Osprey is a damn good aircraft and kicks ass. Just needs more guns...
Geeze, how much space do you actually save? Why couldn't the wings be fixed? Some group of a hundred engineers or so had to work on this design? How many years of delays, added complexity for failure was sacrificed just to save a few cubic ft of storage space? Do we really need to pack this complex plane like sardines in a can? This feature is "cool" if you never consider the cost/time/failure ramifications. Ridiculous if you do?
@watcher1727 yes but if you didnt it couldn't fit below deck for storage. The idea is to allow bigger aircraft to fold and bit below deck were before you had to have a smaller aircraft.
@watcher1727 You have obviously never been aboard ship. We see all kinds of engineerisms in the V-22 community. Things that an engineer who has never flown, never been on a ship and never worked on aircraft comes up with because he or she doesnt understand the requirements for shipborne aircraft. It saves more than a few cubic feet of space, it nearly cuts the space requirement in half. Not to mention if the planes are stored on the flight deck, they are not getting battered by wind and wave.
@watcher1727 The V22 has a wingspan of about 50 feet, even with the rotors stowed inboard, that's a lot of space. add another 35 feet with the rotors unfolded. that's more than a "few cubic ft" of storage space.
That's a really convenient feature given that there isn't a whole lot of space on a carrier. I remember seeing these things in the 90's when they were still working on making it fly, it's damn impressive know seeing them in action.

Yeah, impressive until you have to do the whole process with speed handles. It takes about 4-6 hours.
