I was only 8, but I never forgot this performance. Sick!!!!!! Why is it that kahiko hula always gives me chicken skin, its like my ancestors inside me are excited to here the music hehe :)
In my own Military Career, I was highly favored to be able to spend 4 years on Oahu. I thank the island and it's people for teaching me. It is Kane Kahiko that I am most pround to know exist because, this halau recreates the warriors of old hawaii for us. though this video is 26 years old, it remains a stark reminder of how personal it was to fight one of these warriors. And they had no rifles, no Bayonets and no field packs, just some fierce weaponry and a will to win !
Dea you go....dea you go...many have tried to copy them, Too many actually. But the Mana just wasnt there. It has to come from the source, not from an attempted duplication. Only a hand full of Kumu's had "it" and they resided from Aiea, "Four Big Spirits". Until these Kumu's entered the scene, Merrie Monarch was only interesting at Best. Three has gracefully passed, Only one more remains. Oh...and they all went to Aiea High. RIP you blessed 3, and Obrien you keep on keeping on my Brother
Amazing! I remembered this performance and how proud I was of this halau, this wonderful kumu, and of our culture through the dedication of the dance. Eo Na Kane o Waimapuna! EO !
I remember this awesome performance in 1986. This truly showcased the Hawaiian Art of Male Kahiko. I was very impressed with their movements, the precision and the fierceness of the mastery of Lupenui. I think from here on Male Kahiko was at its highest and continued to climb. I am proud that Kanaka Maoli are back to their identity.
