Very impressive graphics for an Atari. I used to play F18 Interceptor on my Uncles Amiga back in the day and i thought, even to this day that had the best 3d graphics you would ever see on the Atari and Amiga. After seeing this i have changed my opinion, this is awesome! Check out my channel if you want to see some F18 Videos. Thanks.
@RibNSpicY - Amiga had more colors, but ran the MC68000 CPU a bit slower (7.16MHz vs. 8MHz on the ST & Mac), so some games that were more CPU intensive (3D games, especially) were a little faster on the ST. It's odd that 10-12fps was fairly acceptable back then and now anything under 30fps is considered crap, no matter how good the graphics look otherwise.
@TeamRocketReviews elite 2 wasnt the fastest game on any format, & most 3d games similators racing games etc, ran faster on a st or archemidies.
since the st's cpu had a 12% faster clock speed than the amiga ( 8mhz atari, 7.09mhz amiga) & the archemidies arm risc cpu, was far more efficent than the st's where a amiga 500 & st could do about 0.7 mips the earlist archemidies could bo 4.5 mips & something like the 3000 could do above 18 mips.
@TeamRocketReviews i will say this before the amigian fan boys pipe ups, amigas where great machines & they did have geater scrolling capablities through its blitter & in game sound, giving more off an arcade game than the average stfm (the biggest selling st) but when scrolling capablities in a game was less important the st & archemidies had the advantage.
what machine was better was purely down to what you needed it for.
i own a atari ste, archemidies 3010 and a amiga 500+
@cant1rac Cannot remember the memory speed on the ST, but the 68k in the ST/STe was indeed clocked faster than the 68k in the A1k/A500 etc. Unfortunately, most later apps/games etc extensively used the Amiga's blitter, copper and paula dma subsystems to run software much faster than the ST, which had no custom support hardware and had to rely totally on its 68k cpu.
The STe was better, buts its blitter was not as good as the one in the A500. The Falcon was a nice machine though.
@xnonsuchx This is true for the earlier 3d games. Later though. programmers figured out they could use the Amigas blitter to fill in polygons quickly, and so even though the Amiga had a slightly slower cpu, it became considerably faster at 3d games than the ST.
@RibNSpicY yeah I find that with FPS...I mean back in the 90's I had a 386sx 33mhz and it used to struggle to play doom compared to my mates 486! I mean i were getting like 10-15fps but it was playable and I didnt care. Today people would call that unplayable!
The Games today are better but do the have more fun??
I was a member of the Atari club in my home town Almere in Holland and had a lot of fun with the atari systems( i stil work in the IT) i want to write a something about this time on my site helpinghandalmere.nl
I can remember buying this game from Allders and getting up the next day before school to play it!! Didn't it have like 4 discs? Remember the training lesson "milk run"?! Awesome!!
I still have a diskette with this program on it ;) (well actually, it all belongs to my dad, but he doesn't use it's Atari nor it's diskettes)My dad also had (or still has) a magazine with a review about this progran, where they stated that graphics were outstanding.
I can also still remember how I thought the system said 'kauwgum' (chewing gum in Dutch): I didn't know they meant 'Caution'
The same for 'Pull up' which more sounded like 'Owaah! Owaah!' ;) Nice to see this one on youtube.
This was one of my best ever games on Atari ST, if not the best one ever :-) There was another game, called F16 Combat Pilot, although I preferred this one.
It looks like F29-Retaliator...

@xnonsuchx And apparently Frontier: Elite II runs really slow on Atari ST.

@TeamRocketReviews - Yes...as it was on original Amigas and lower end PCs too.

amigas were better a scrolling games

@TeamRocketReviews a st could do 16 bit application at 1 mips (million instructions per second) to 0.7 mips on a amiga 500.
this fell to 0.5 on the st when using the 32bit instruction on the motorola 68000, i dont have an accurrate figure for the amiga

@JasperAbraxxious that is true but then your not comparing like with like, ie a falcon should be compared to an amiga 1200.
an ste should be compared to the current 500 or later 500+
when you compare comparable model, a st is always faster at 3d and simulations.
even the most extreme amigians admit the falcon was the better of the 2 machines.
amigas blitter was better but ataris clock speed were better and latency.
meaning in real world performance it should be fairly equal

@JasperAbraxxious i think both machines are fantastic, pros and cons in each system, i dont see any particuilarly on any technical level .
you give me a superiour feature of the amiga i can give you one for the atari
i own both machines.
there fantastic

@weeardguy Excellent cockpit graphics and sound on the ST here :) I was an Amiga guy at the time but i came very close to buying a 1040STFM.
