Ho chi Minh, Vietnam's communist leader, is a disguting TRAITOR & MURDERER! In exchange for chinese military aids in the war with France (1945-1954), he gave up Paracel & Spratly archipelagos which are very rich in oil kresources to China. He even ordered to murder his own mistress named Nong thi Xuan when she threatened to disclose her sexual relationship with him since that would destroy his image as a "Father" of Vietnam who "sacrifices" his whole life for Vietnam revolution.
Vietnam was not interested in invading Thailand or Malaysia. The only reason they went into Cambodia was to overthrow Pol Pot. Thousand of Cambodian were refugee camps in Vietnam. So the exiled Cambodian gov't persuaded Vietnam to help because the west and the U.N. refused or ignored the pleas for help. They were just too tired from the Vietnam war.
Earlier on before the war, Ho Chi Minh led a delegation to France to petition for more freedom, actually they really didn't mind staying with their French colonial masters, however the French gov't had a disinterested French official (a minor one at that) listening to their petition fell asleep. Ho felted slighted and embarassed and went back to Vietnam...the rest is the sad history of the Vietnam war.
@thewongaddress No, Ho went to Versaille to take the first steps to getting rid of those colonial masters. He wanted France to remain friendly but he was always for Vietnam's independence. The French knew what he wanted & so they sent that lowly official to show that they weren't going to listen to him. That official was under orders to ignore the arrogant colonial who dared to question French policy
The vietnam war was not so much about fighting "communism" but rather "nationalism". They just wanted to have their own country back from colonial influence (France/the U.S.).

Though, US and the defunct Republic of Vietnam eventually lost the War but it paved the way of weakening the strength of N Vietnamese invader and its allies, China and Soviet Union as well. They lost the morale and resource to advance further to Thailand and Malay Peninsula. Without US's direct involvement and sacrifice of Republic of Vietnam and its citizens, Southeast Asia would fall one by one in the late50s or early 60s.
Historians delete and ignore purposely this factor in order to be political correct. If it weren't America's defeat mentality and distorted left-wing propaganda, America could wrap up the war in a happy conclusion like Korea.

Similar mentality is now hindering and endangering the War on Terror. However, bear in mind that Taliban and Al Quaida alike groups or nations are not so gentle, forgiven and forgettable as Vietnamese. Their ultimate agenda first, is the total destruction of the state of Israel, second US third, modern Islamic societies like Turkey,Egypt,Indonesia and many others finally, worldwide pacification of infidel and their religion and believe.
Your ex-soviet mentality and pride blinde your rationale. Russia is also under Islamic Facisim too. Eygt is a military dictatorship but now a Taliban regime.
People will disagree/complain no matter what we do.
Look at WWI or WWII we didn't just jump right into the war, and still we get criticized for that. When we actually were a neutral, isolationist country people cried we didn't go save them from the beginning. Now that we have a more aggressive, non neutral policy people cry we're imperialists and bullies and stick our nose into other business.
Vietnam wasn't our war, but we were in SEATO and obligated to help.
@OlderG0ds We were not obligated at all. US government wanted to go into Vietnam. I am not saying that is a good or bad thing. US has the power to choose its policy, not follow others unless it wants to. That is what being a superpower means. US wanted war in Vietnam. It thought it could win & only when it was clear that victory was not worth the cost that the US regretted its involvement.

@fgah Al Quaida and Talibans were created and financed by USandA. Egypt isn't a modern Islamic society, it is a military dictatorship.

Vietnam...just as useless war, as the Soviet Union one in Afghanistan. All these war games, lead to big disasters.
