What was heart-breaking for me in 2000 was that Monica came into the French on a roll, but she just couldn't get past Pierce in the QF. :(

That would be the tournament where Monica had a bet with her boyfriend at the time, Enzo to reward herself with an all you can eat dinner at a famous Roman restaurant IF she took the title. She did and had the dinner only to be hurt badly by a stupid remark from Enzo that she had already eaten too much. Men!

I remember Monica lost a super-close match in the next round to Pierce; that really was such a great disappointment... if Monica had been able to win it I think she could have won the whole event!

yup. It was a really close one. And with Hingis far from her best and Martinez and Sanchez in the other half of the draw, it was obvious that the winner of the Pierce-Seles match would win. Too bad for Monica, but Pierce was just a bit better on that day.
