Cooper invited the desperate confrontation w/ sheriff's deputies because he refused to concede their arrest authority. He evidently relied on a WACO-type PR threat, making it known his home was wired w/ explosives & would use assualt rifle to keep police away. So he succumbed to intimidation. He wasn't as well-protected thru notoriety & popularity as he thought. The defunkt Research Center sure is sad -- His supporters wouldn't, couldn't cough up a lousy $2000 month to keep his legacy alive?

If they wanted to kill him and had super advanced technology (like Bill said they did), why didn't they just use a deathray, or teleport him away, or something?
Instead, they (and their super technology) let Bill expose them for decades. That's pretty damn tolerate of them.
More likely he broke some laws and when the law went out to arrest him, he shot at them and, thus, got shot himself.
