Just because you enjoy Japanese 'stuff' doesn't mean you know the people as a culture. I lived in Tokyo from my infancy until I was about 16 until my father retired from the service. Not to bash you, but just because you like anime isn't a reason to jump the gun. They're and entirely different culture, thus culture shock! That's how it was when I first stepped on American soil in the early 00's. You might expect everyone to like anime, but you'll pretty much just find ordinary, everyday people.

otaku is a person who's "really" into anime and Japanese manga culture...specifically person who usually spend most of their time at home or indoors and rarely socialize with others. American term that has the nuance closest to otaku is a nerd (no offense to them intended) hope this helps :)
