Prop 8 doesn't take away gay's rights (civil unions), it just says that they can't call it "marriage." And I think that's a good thing; marriage in it's purest form is a sacred and religious act, and that shouldn't be distorted. And obviously the people of California agreed. So tough.

So there are two things here Prop 8 is discrminating against: 1. It's discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation, basically if you're born gay, you're rights are almost non-existant. 2. Prop 8 was a proposition to amend the sate constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman. This does NOT take away gay rights, because they have all the same rights in civil unions.
Marriage was founded on and defined by religion, so people shouldn't have the right to come in and demand that definition to be changed. Gays haven't lost any rights, it just isn't called marriage! It's just a difference in terminology. California voted, and that's what they wanted.

Prop 8 is a constitutional ammendment (for California's constitution) to define marriage as between a man and a woman. This does NOT prohibit gays from getting civil unions and having all the same rights as married people, the state just won't call it "marriage."
It's basically just a matter of terminology. It doesn't take anyone's rights away.
