  • This is kinda weird because his daughter is a friend of mine and this is the first time I'm listening to her dad's work. It's pretty amazing, not gonna lie. I'm a fan now :3

  • This is PRESTO, which means very fast in italian, and in music writing, so, it has to be played very fast... not that complicated to understand... it sounds good.

  • Unbeknownst to most of you making these outrageous criticisms despite not having a single bit of knowledge of classical guitar in any way, shape or form, William Kanengiser (the guitarist in the video, for those who don't know how to read) worked on this piece for an extended period of time WITH the composer Carlo Domeniconi, so if there is any definitive interpretation of the piece, it is Kanengiser's, the entirety of which can be heard on his CD "Echoes of the Old World" and it is superb.

  • ridiculous

  • Fra Sheep: Reminds me Zurbaran's "Ram with tethered Feet".

  • Insane!

  • He has a powerful tecnique and remarkable tone. It's the best and strongest interpretation. I recommend his tecnique for classical players. His finger's angle creates this strong sound.

  • Is kind of cool hearing it this fast, but he is making a lot of mistakes because of it. I rater hear a more clean interpretation even if its slower.

  • the critics can get fucked. seriously.

  • @slowhand19 The critics have never been fucked. Hence the reason they are critics.

  • Ha! Check out his head from 1:36 on.

  • one of my favorite musicians and pieces ever.

saw him long ago in concert in Baltimore... will never forget..!!!

  • Great guitar player!!

  • Great, i played in his guitar orchestra for Shingo Fugi's concerto for kanengiser. Great experience.

  • This is not one of my favorite Kanengiser pieces. But he'll kick my ass at it thats for sure. I saw him in concert tonight here in Albuquerque. The man is absolutely phenomenal. Wow!! just plain ridiculous. I need to practice1 ALOT!!!!!! Hats off to ya Bill.

  • "Weak Performance"??? I'd really like to see you do better. Armchair critics should spend more time practicing! Those that can do, those that can't write stupid comments like "Weak performance" on YouTube.

  • This really isn't that fast. Everybody else I've heard play is faster, except John Williams, including Li Jie. Honestly, I haven't heard a version more artful. This is the best version by far. And it is definitely played cleanly and with virtuosity. It is ridiculous that people are saying that this performance is not clean and full of artistry.

  • It loses some of the mystery at this tempo. Perhaps it's the lack of expression that is at issue.

  • it sounds good. stop bein wannabe musicians and saying shit like you fags are such great musicians. and gitboxjammer what you like writin an essay on youtube? nobody gives a shit if hes playin too fast

  • Weak Performance :((

  • much to fast to hear how it should be played and the whole Koyunbaba watch Li Jie by far the best of all recordings.

  • (:-O=

  • the one thing I have ALWAYS had against classical guitarists is that they try to play ALMOST everything as fast as possible. For example, I'm sorry Mr. Fisk but the Bach prelude in D minor was NOT meant to be played that fast. Your technique is incredible but your interpretation lacks. Same here, although I am a fan of kanengiser's - most pieces he interprets beautifully.

  • @musicofdano Are you saying he is playing the piece too fast? You do realise it is marked presto, i.e. as fast as possible.

  • @musicofdano replace "classical" with every other genre and ur point may be worthwhile. what r u basing that on??? every classical piece is played too fast?? that makes no sense

  • I love kanengiser. IMO: His version of this played on his CD "Echoes of the Old World" is much better. I'm a little disappointed with this performance though. Carlo Domeniconi plays it best imo. Ill check out Candelarias as suggested below. thx

  • Realmente mto bom!

  • To be honest I think Aniello Desiderio is still unattainable for anyone

  • Nutavut plays this extremely well, of course this is also a good interpretation

  • It's very good. I actually prefer the John Williams version and even moreso the Christopher Parkening version. Both have more feel to my ears. But there's NO denying that Kanengiser is an awesome player. I saw him in '89 playing the Rodrigo Concerto and it was amazing. BTW... I used to play this peice as well. But won't say I did it justice.

  • To all of you people who are tone deaf, lack precision, style and class please post a video response and show the rest of us how this should be played. Put up or shut up. This is HIS interpretation. But please oh please, all you people who think this is "sloppy" "messy" do show the rest of us poor guitarists how this should be played. I will be waiting.... I agree with you ManOfMagic1412.

  • @todrrez I agree. he has a reason behind why he played it so fast.

  • how could this people say its not accurate and sounds messy? damn! this piece are well played! you have to learn the guitar before posting bad comments about this master,I think these people are just cant do what kanengiser does.

  • @ManOfMagic1412 I play guitar. I've put in a bit of work on this piece. I can't play it this well. But I can still recognize that it is indeed a bit sloppy. That is clear if you compare it with John Williams'. That said, it's still worth watching/listening. The lack of robotic perfection actually can make it more interesting...

  • 1:17 - the greek song "Milise Mou" - haha!

    Great fingerstyle technique ~

  • thats just way the song is play

  • That is just insane.

  • This is good, but not great. It seems like he's trying to show off by playing it too fast. It sounds kinda messy.

  • John Williams definitely plays this piece better than anybody else!! I think this is a tad too fast and not very accurate as a result :(

  • I do agree with you; William Kanengiser is an amazing guitarist. But with a bit of practice, Koyunbaba isn't really all that hard. It's mostly just really fast pull-offs with some unusual fingerings and tunings.

  • Do you think? I think presto isn't too hard but takes a while to get up to the speed, but on the third part I'm finding the timing is very difficult to get sorted out.

  • I bet his hands get tired, no seriously that's got to hurt.

  • Why are you guys saying bad things about bill kanengiser?

    He's amazing.

  • huuu he is amazing i love him

i most to buy his cd

  • kozak ;d

  • He's a great player, but I really don't understand his way of playing the harmonics section at 2:00... It's triplets with a clear groove. He just plays randomly and wildly. Also, he's supposed to move down to harmonics at 5th fret, surely he didn't read the sheet music wrong?!?

  • wassuppaska...here is ur answer. Its HIS INTERPRETATION.

  • indeed, aniello plays it waaaaaay better!

  • AVESOME!!!

  • Aniello Desiderio played this waaay better...

  • just great!

  • Aah... I knew it. He's one of the LAQG-players. :)

I didn't knew his new, but I saw the guitar and all of a sudden I realised who it was. x)

  • He plays much better than John Williams.

  • Why compare?

  • thumb up!

    this is sooooo good!

  • wow...i wish my right hand was so relaxed over this period of time...

  • Like he doesn't know that..

  • your clearly don't know who he is

  • @supermaurox222 it's a member of the los angeles guitar quartet (LAGQ) you FOOL ! :D

  • I'm really trying hard to make myself think Guitar1403 is just being sarcastic.

  • Brosef,

When you get as good as this guy you can do whatever you want.

    Cheers

  • Hey Guitar1403, you must be a guitar genius! I wonder why YOU don't perform this piece. Maybe because nobody would listen to a smart-ass like you.

  • IIt's a great music and a great performance. Congratulations

  • amazing piece and amazing playing !!!

  • he plays with so much emoton

  • 1955anthony, you obviously have very little imagination. Otherwise this piece would conjure up all sorts of adventures and feelings.

  • I met and played for Domeniconi and if you listen to his style of playing it is a little rough around the edges but the style is all importnt. I was also at the premier given by David Russell - now he's the man who shreds this piece. Bill rocks too though!

  • amazing, almost synthetic, in a positive sense, unearthly. I really enjoy it.

  • Great piece and great interpretation of it, if it was a tad cleaner at some of the rougher parts it would probably be the best version of this song ever in my opinion.

  • Muy buena interpretacion.

  • I dont know what you people are talking about. Usually people drone on when playing this section. also it gets fast and intense in the beginning and then it slows down and becomes much more expressive

  • it's pretty impressive but lacks soul somehow. the li jie one is preferable.

  • Fast or not fast,

    This guy is fucking good!

  • Peter Fletcher will be playing this at Carnegie Hall on March 29.

  • ok well he's certainly playing it very fast and that seems to be all he's focusing on, the problem with this movement is that without the rest of the piece it doesn't make too much sense. I HATE how he is playing this. This movement is supposed to be played with a somewhat brisk tempo but my god slow the !@#$ down and have the piece be played cleaner and have more fun with it, there can still be some expression here. Listen to Phillip Candelarias performance of it, it's fantastic.

  • @gitboxjammer could you send me a link to Philip's version of it? Thanks. :)

  • Unfortunately it's only available on a cd he made a long time ago which I think is no longer made, I have it lying around somewhere, I'll send you the info when I find it.

  • Comment removed

  • @gitboxjammer what you say might be true, but hes playing it like the composer intended it... check for yourself... just search for "Koyunbaba IV played by Carlo Domeniconi"

  • @gitboxjammer what you say might be true in some cases, but even if Kanengiser is playing incredibly fast he's playing it like the composer intended it... check for yourself... just search for "Koyunbaba IV played by Carlo Domeniconi"

  • @Cozmosiz86 just because Carlo Dominiconi performed it that way in some clips doesn't mean it's how he wants it played. We all have nerves and screw ups when performing. Also who cares about how he wants it played. When I perform something it's me performing it with my own interpretation of the piece not what I think the composer would like. That's not to say that we should just do things without consideration to the composers intentions but rather interpretation is unique simply an opinion.

  • beautiful, he is a very talented player i dont care what anyone else says

  • Not very dynamic. Open tuning and pull-offs. Weak. I don't know what it is, but you seem very impressed with yourself.

  • I find it oddly humorous & hippocritical that you posted this. A few years ago, I played Koyunbaba in one of your masters classes, & before I started playing, you said to the class: "I don't know why people even want to perform this. It's so over-played & people are tired of it". I was so pissed off that I felt like leaving & didn't even play the entire piece. I left demotivated & upset, realizing the class was more about boosting your ego than teaching your students.

  • that sucks bro

he just went down in my book then

  • he did this a long time ago, one of the first ones to play it. he is a bit older now.

  • He plays for a living, I'm sure other performing artists learn and and perform certain pieces that they are not particularly fond of, nevertheless, it's what people want to hear.. Kanengiser is a great guitarist.

  • Comment removed

  • That sucks that you had a bad impression of the guy. I met him in person several years ago and I thought he was a rather nice guy.

  • urghh

    got bored after 20 seconds

  • i also play this song at the moment

wow, you got awesome speed, but in my opinion its played to fast, there is nearly no difference between p and f.

there are some awesome versions on youtube, played with much feeling and not just on topspeed

  • Everyone must listen to Antigoni Goni playing this piece .She is the GFA winner of 1995 .

    It is farout superior .

It is to be found on a cd produced by Norbert Kraft ( Naxos ).Her timing and tone are flawless .A pity she not here on YT.

  • you know bill is a gfa winner as well.

  • The fast parts are ok, not that great. What I really don't like is the slow parts. It's like he's not truly feeling the underlying middle eastern music.

  • I agree; compared to real Mid East music ...it's baloney.

  • For anyone who wants to play this piece well, I'd recommend they do what Domeniconi did and travel to Turkey or somewhere in the middle east. If they don't have the means, they should at least take the time and listen to their music.

  • awesome dynamics...takes much to get that kind of intensity...almost as if there were ripples and waves printed on the sheet music instead of lines p's and f's

  • awesome video bill, I didn't know about it though! Anyway I like your interpretation better than John Williams'. very good

  • I don´t have words, It´s increible!!!

  • It's good, but I expected better. There are quite a few mistakes in this performance.

  • Este guitarrista esta bien pesadote, vi tambien la de rondo alla turca y la ejecuta impresionantemente.

    Felicitaciones william kanengiser

  • I got to see him play this live once, insane.

  • i wonder what sheet music of this would look like

actually i would probably not cuz i would go insane

    good job

  • The sheet music doesn't look too bad actually. It's just fast, not too difficult. There are many much more difficult pieces. This just shows it off too much.

  • makes me feel bad..

  • in a sense, makes me feel bad too. i wish i could play this way :(

  • just lookin at his playing makes me feel good

  • I've seen Aniello Desiderio performing this piece live - he simply blew us away.

  • Alucinant!!

  • I have known William's recordings and seen his concerts (also with LAGQ) and must say he keeps staying on the top for so many years. One thing that fascinates me besides his fabulous music though is his beginner student-like left hand position, particularly his pinky and index finger sticking out. It looks ralaxed at times, other times tense. How can you play so flawlessly with this handicap, William?

  • Cool ass piece of music!!!!! I have been in classical guitar for 8 years and I don't know why I never had heard this piece before. I getting the sheet music.

  • admirable, fantastica ejecución, felicitaciones

  • Had the pleasure of meeting him last weekend at a guitar festival... excellent player, nice guy

  • it's a unique intepretation, a bit modern-sounding. although i prefer it a bit slower since it's a beautiful piece and 3:21 mins (for its most famous movement) doesn't give each note of the masterpiece enough justice. I'd like to hear his interpretation of the whole piece. Anyone knows a link?

  • perfect interpretation

  • I have the DVD at home and let me tell you that it really sounds cleaner technically on the DVD than on this page. So please don't judge him too fast guys.

  • SOOOO effing good........

  • Very good job man!

    Bravissimo!!!

  • Domeniconi was born in italia but he lives in berlin but because Domeniconi's wife is turkish they go to turkey a lot. He became enamoured with turkish people and culture started the department for guitar studies at the conservatory in Istanbul and developed a compositional style that reflected the regional folk influence. there is a village called koyunbaba in turkey im not sure if its related to this song by the way koyunbaba means sheep-father / shepherd. just some info.

  • thanks i really wanted to know why its name is turkish.

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I hear an unhearable metronome .

In my opninion the interpretation of Antigoni Goni is superior.(She was the winner of the GFA competition in '95 )

Listen to her debut album produced by Norbert Kraft .Even when she plays fast ,her timing is flawless and you hear the silence ,the spaces between and beyond the sounds she makes.

  • Not the best performace i have ever heard , but still brilliant.

I think it sould be slower, with more piano-forte expresion...

  • I'd like to much to see Koyunbaba complite.

I like to much William Kanengiser

  • its an incredible perform for this song!!!! kanengiser interpretation is amazig !!! xD

  • I like this interpretation...

  • way off man. . . his CD was best..!!

  • Absolutely brilliant ! :-)

  • Sweet!

  • What do you think presto is.

  • LOL

i was just thinking the same thing!

    whawt a noob.

  • what signature guitar is he using? sounds good

  • They are all custom guitars but I think he did not spec them before they were built. I'm pretty sure he's playing a guitar by Thomas Humphrey (RIP) these days, used to play guitars by Paul Jacobs.

This one sounds like the PJ guitar on "Carribean Souvenirs"

No matter, he sounds great (and pretty much the same) on anything he plays.

  • REALLY AMAZING!

  • Koyunbaba yı çok dinledim ve izledim ama, bu kadar gitara hakim başkasını görmedim. Süper!!! Best regards...

  • p.s this piece is soooo played out.

Its becoming a cliche in the guitar rep.

Domeniconi wrote other music. Maybe you all should check it out. Most of it is good. Except for his hommage to Jimi Hendrix, that piece blows.

  • so what if it's cliche?? something that's cliche was probably gimmicky or a fad to begin with. It's not cliche. It's good. And "good" stays good, no matter how often its played.

  • blah, blah blah blah

  • haha. flipscratch = 1 "idriveasaturn" = 0

  • kanengiser is very good but you cant compare him to parkening in terms of musicality. parkening is a legend!

  • just whoa!

  • parkening isnt as fast, but has musicality. blah balh same defense. anhyway, i think kanengiser is amazing and he blew me away when i saw him (he is also quite the showman) but honestly, if he played this 5% slower it would sound better. tenision isnt only built by amazing speed, but by immaculate accuracy. this recording was not immaculate.

  • I first saw and heard Kanengiser in Baltimore at the Martha Berry Museum and my jaw dropped..!!!! I've also seen and personally met C. Parkening.. ..there is no comparison.. Kanengiser SMOKES Parkening. It was funny the last time I saw Parkening in Birmingham - he was "trying" to play Presto from Koyunbaba and must have been embarrassed at himself when he finished the sad performance. KANENGISER IS THEE GREATEST LIVING GUITARIST in my opinion..!!

  • Bill is great, but if you think he is the greatest living guitarist, the maybe you havent heard enough guitarists.

  • great playing one of the best

  • The correct tuning is C#G#C#G#C#E

  • Carlo Domeniconi rules

  • The tuning I play it in is DADADF

  • Here hi tuned three strings on C# unison in interval of tree octals and and comes out G# with E... maybe i'm wrong

  • I thought the tuning was d minor... i have the music

  • His tuning is open c# minor. Incredible fingerwork at that speed, but why take the ending at the same click? It's release!

  • ....seem like he got tuned it to tuning harmonic of some middle east string instrument

  • that was f****g terrific , what tuning he use?

  • perfect. this is a part of the song. and this part is very very well.. bravo!

  • He plays well, but I think he goes too fast..

  • i think it is too fast also. I prefer the tempo taken Antigoni Goni

  • The title is Presto

  • So what. Just because it says presto doesn't mean that one can't play it to fast for thier own good.

  • actually yes.. if it says presto, it means you have to play it fastly... The word "Presto" doesn't mean "slower than presto"... its 180-200bpm i think

  • thats fine, all I am saying is that Bill has the ability to play it much cleaner, with better articulation, and less production noise if he slowed down like 10 clicks. Furthermore, I don't believe that Carlo took that tempo marking as literally as you do my friend. If you can play it a at 200 and make it speak well, then go for it.

  • sooooo considering the fast the Bill is playing this piece at about 135ish bpm, Bill is playing about 40bpm under tempo! perhaps you should call Domeniconi and squeel on poor William.

    you dope

  • Presto simply means fast, it does not mean 180-200bpm.

  • I think you´re in a big mistake dude, in fact a Presto goes from 180 to 208!!!

  • According to your metronome, yes. According to an italian dictionary, no.

  • Замечательный гитарист. От души желаю ему новых успехов!

  • It must be played whole suite...

  • Love his playing in general. But for some reason this is preatty painful to watch. Too much physical effort, the piece is not that hard.

  • Very nice, sounded very fluid

  • This is a great movement from Koynbaba. Very intese.

  • nails are a personal preference. experiment, and try everything. often some guitarists change their preference over their careers. also, you can try ping pong nails which, I think personally, is a good middle ground between real and acrylic and great if you have naturally fragile nails. acrylics were always too thick and cumbersome for my taste however.

  • Nonsense. If you have weak nails, buy Hard as Hoof at Walmart. Stay away from ping-pong balls and all such bullshit.
