  • Goose Bumps

  • which song is this?

  • @style40 Chariots of Fire

  • between 1:54 - 1:58 i thought he fell :O i swear my heart skip a beat.

  • It is much more impressive that he ran 3:59 because it was on a dirt track with shoes that are no where near as advanced as today's.

  • ... and this was the 50s, so he probably lit up a smoke pretty much as soon as he was finished.

  • What a great sporting moment!

  • i live opposite the running track were this happened!

  • @DRVircavs don't you go insane from the running music?

  • My last name is Bannister. My school teacher asked me " Is your granddad Roger Bannister? "

Haha I said Yes..... But of course hes not really :D

  • I'd rather wish that John Landy would have been the first to break the 4 min mile.

  • @run2win352 whys that

  • @run2win352 nah Zamperini is the man.... he would have been first probably, had he not gotten drafted

  • I run a 5:50 mile right now and I'm in 8th grade. I hope to go sub 4 by college.

  • Best man :)

  • I believe the track was cinders and the shoes had spikes, but their was still a lot of foot slippage.

  • Just think what he could of done in a pair of Nike Air Max ;)

  • yeah im 11 years old i run a 4"56, is that good

  • @888kermit Stick to it kermit .... Yes that is good.

  • @888kermit liar

  • very inspirational!

  • No matter how good you are or fast you are, people are still going to think your an asshole if you go onto You Tube and start bragging about it, ( not pointing any fingers ) so instead of bragging why don't people go outside and RUN off some of that tension. Christ...

  • im in 9th grade and i can do 3 miles in 13 minutes...

  • @imboor3d stfu

  • @imboor3d lmfao gtfo

  • @hatchetboyicp lol :p was joking

  • I can run the mile in 1 minute by dividing by zero and then running backwards

  • He probably did do it ,BUT,lots of countrys were experimenting with amphetamines at this time and i bet athletes and soldiers would make the purrfect guinea pigs :)

  • nobody cares about how fast all of you guys run and in which grade you are

do you have any idea how much harder it was to run back then, they didnt have little cute pairs of sneakers from nike and the ideal turf

so please shut up at just watch and enjoy this vid!

  • Im 6 years old and I run my mile is 4:18 is that good.Message me if you got some tips.

  • @467076 liar

  • @luna23jj No shit Sherlock.

  • @467076 how tall are you? if youre as small as a six year old should be then youre sprinting the whole mile and you will be faster than a car when you grow to your full potential

  • @467076 this guys obviously a liar last year when i was in 7nth grade track i barely ran a 5:20

  • ....when the british were good at something...

    jk lol.

  • he went to my old school :)

  • this video only lasts 3mins 48 secs................ no wonder he broke 4 mins

  • @steevestuff Now that's funny. :)

  • he made us proud

  • i run the 3mile in 18:32 and im in eighth grade my mile time is like 5:27

  • @PepsoPoopo411 and this is relevant how?

  • @PepsoPoopo411 im in 9th grade and i run the 5k in under 16:30 and the mile in under 5:00

  • @RandoCommando28 well, im in 7th grade actually. but since schools basically over i say 8th grade. but thats an excuse, thats a damn good time. keep it up-

    NavaalJ

  • @PepsoPoopo411 thank you

  • @RandoCommando28 who gives a fuck you sack of shit

    besides, you are lieng

  • @imboor3d really, i dont give a shit... tell you what when i win state in the mile i let you know and then you can look it up k

  • He is my favorite sports star of all time. He became a physician and not an ordinary one, but a very eminent hemotologist. The Chariots of Fire theme was played in this video and coincidentally, Harold Abrahams, one of the subjects of that movie, was the official timer of Bannister's sub 4 minute mile.

  • Best Sporting moment of the last century! Wish I was there

  • I broke the five minute mile just the other day I got 4:57.44!!!

  • @TheJslickster my 2 mile split was 4:48 and 4:50 ;)

  • @weeds502 BULLSHIT. The 800 does not take the most guts. how can you just say that. i would like to see you run 3 and 6 miles in 4-4:30 mile splits and we will see which one takes the most guts you impudent fuck. you are a dipshit.

  • Comment removed

  • @Jackdepumpkinking @Jackdepumpkinking your cool! ;) except i wasnt comparing 3-6 miles ass wipe! unless you think 6 miles is four laps around the track in this video.. did you lose count?? impRudent fuck ;)

  • @TheJslickster Well im a freshman and I ran sub 18 the other day

  • 800 takes the most guts though

  • no it doesnt

  • @weeds502 yeah it's easy going in the 800 until the last 200-250.

  • @TheJslickster not if you push your self hard enough

  • @weeds502 how its really easy

  • @weeds502 no, no it doesnt dumbass, that takes less than the 400 you little pussy, you obviously have never ran anything farther than the 800, the mile takes a shitload more (unless you suck)

  • @MrRandocommando alright lets see you run an 800 at 48 second pase, and yes i have run the mile before. what im getting at is the mile is pased, the 800 is an all out sprint for 2 laps. the pase could change at any second! you proly think the 800 is easy cause you run it like a pussy and cant hang with the sub 2 guys

  • My PE teacher made us watch this in school, I had a numb butt after though...!?! Painful

  • It would get boring sitting there watching someone run

  • Lol, it wasn't too bad, I just sat there thinking, wow, I definitely wouldn't do that!?!

  • @honeybeesplz Wow you must not be a runner this is a historical moment I would of probably got into tears seeing someone break the 4 minute barrier and here you are saying it's boring? go play football or something

  • Wow, back then, they don't have have comfortable shoes either, I wonder what the secret is?

  • deterimination, competition, heart. as corny as it sounds lol

  • thats your secret right there. your squishy shoes are wrecking your feet

  • @powderski11 but I thought they're only getting better with new technology and advanced materials, no?

  • nope, our injury rates have gone up since cushioning has been introduced because it wrecks your form

  • definetely, have u heard about a race in mexico, 200 miles in 2 days, and they do it with just leather soldes on, theyre feet are so strong, my shins have been causing me problems cos of some new cushioned trainers

  • whats the name of the song pliizzz somebody telll me

  • Chariots of fire.

  • You're absolutely right!

  • beautiful video, vangelis music was a nice touch...if you think about it, this time translates even faster considering that this track and his spikes were no where near what they are today, in the 70's as technology improved with shoes many many more sub4 milers emerged

  • He made it look so easy, graceful and natural. Thanks for posting this. Almost makes me cry.

  • GO BROWNS !!!!

  • I once took a crap in less than 4 minutes.

  • 20 minutes around the track will always beat 20 minutes in the stands.

  • who cares about your times, Roger Bannister broke the 4 min mile

    in the 50's

    which was very good

the crowd looked so cute with their little coats

  • @puppies21616 Anyone who comes down to 4 minutes or below you should give credit to...

  • harrow legend

  • The mile must be the most mentally tough race out there!

  • tough yes.... but not the most mentally tough

  • Yes I totally agree with you, however I would have to say that the 2 mile race is the most pyhsicaly tough race for me.

  • Met this guy Today! he came to my school

  • crazy stuff, it must have been amazing to finally break the mark

  • wow, i wonder how this guy feels, the first time i got under twenty i freaked

  • lmfao. are you 500 pounds overweight?

  • Under Twenty running a 5k (three miles)

  • lol'd

  • fail

  • not in the mile, in CROSS COUNTRY IN A THREE MILE RACE

  • 20 minute mile, you're really slow

  • 20 minute 5k? You still suck.

  • says a person whos youtube account is about movie reviews and gutair hero???

  • Sorry to break it to ya, but I'm not obssessed over video games. My PR currently is 18:37 for the 5K and I'm currently a sophomore.

  • i'm in eighth grade....

  • Oh really? Good job then. But I don't think Middle Schoolers run the 5K...

  • at dual meets i get to run

  • You say that all these other people are slow running a 20 minute 5k, and you can only run 18:37. Well I ran a 17:49 5k in 88 degres. Less see you make a comeback on that.

  • Just to let you know, in the time that it took everyone to bitch about my comment, I trained myself to a 17:44 5K.

    Thats my comeback.

  • @TheJslickster

Wow, mr. sparta.... you're quite insane...i mean 18:7 in 88 degrees....GOOD LORD! THATS TOUGH! :D

  • 20 minute 5k is pretty good for most!

  • this video inspires for more than just running. it can be inspiration for living life full and making it an adventure. making a difference is what we should all aspire to do and i seek to make a difference in the lives of others and to keep Jesus my Lord and Savior first in my life. life is a journey and to make it worthwhile, it has to be difficult for us sometimes. to learn we must do difficult things.

  • Not in high school.

  • most that don't train at all for it...

  • someone with a PR of 18:37 has no right to tell someone with a 20 minute PR that they suck. when you get low 17s go ahead... but you're not that much faster.

  • Count to 90 seconds, and you'll see how much distance can be traveled in that time.

  • well here's a better one. my PR is 17:02. but you don't see me going around telling people they are slow.

  • That's just cause you're too modest.

  • 18:37, eh? This is my first year running and I'm 17:41. "Slow" is only a matter of perception.

Maybe you should count to 56 seconds, and see how much more distance I can cover than you.

  • For the love of....

Congrats. I'm glad that you're so fast.

18:37 is also my first year time, and I ran a measly 8 minute mile only 4 months before, so being able to run a 18:37 5K for me is a rather big accomplishment, because I improved so much in so little time.

Plus, slow depends on what year you are in. For example, if you are in your senior year, anything above 17:00 is rather slow. If you are a freshman, anything above 20.00 is slow.

  • i completely disagree. i mean sure if you're a senior you've got a slight advantage because you're more developed, but the accumulated miles makes a much bigger difference. it has nothing to do with what year your in. it has to do with how long you've been running. I'm just saying that you can't say anything because your freshman time isn't even that good. there are several people in my school who ran sub 18 as freshmen, most of whom are running low 16's or mid 15's now (as juniors & seniors)

  • I live in Wisconsin, mid-15's are considered very quick, and you would win state with that. And did you not read my post? I had achieved in 4-months what takes most people a year or more to play. My current time? I don't want to make any profound statements, but I'm guessing its around or below 18 as we speak.

  • Congratulations. Good luck with that.

  • @Chocosizzles well my freshmen year i ran sub 17s and you dont see me on here telling people they suck

  • @MrRandocommando Did you really reply to an eight month old comment? The information provided in the posts isn't even relevant anymore.

  • 3.1 to be exact!

  • im charis bannister rodger bannisters my great uncle n u spelled rodge wrong i swear to god n im a catholic im related to rodger bannister!!!!!

  • was he a great guy or what???

  • no my friend you are a liar

  • heh ,and I remember being so excited the first time I ran a six minute mile. Watching this guy run is just surreal.

I know their are faster times now but he was the one who proved it was even possible.

  • awesome

  • Roger Bannister is pretty much amazing

  • anyone actually know his time

  • 3:59.4, it's in the vid

  • Doctors at the time thought that breaking a 4 minute mile would cause your lungs to explode. Also, check out my vid of me breaking 5 XD.

  • Hahahahahahahahaha. Ya, and cats can fly spacecrafts into another galaxy.

  • nice long stride

  • how is this song called?

  • "chariots of fire" by vangelis

dude, you gotta see the movie, chariots of fire

  • 43.13 seconds for a mile is pretty quick. bannister could have been so much better if he wasnt such a nerd, if he trained for it with a proper off season he could have run 3.55 atleast

  • And maybe if he didn't smoke.

  • yeah true, he was really an incredible athlete considering how seriously he took it

  • wow. wenever i run my mile n 5 minuites it feals like my heart is going to explode and my ribcage is caving in...under 4 minutes is INSANE

  • Just wait til I break the 3 minute mile

  • what wre you like 9

  • he went under 4 and was a smoker i wounder what he could of ran with out smoking

  • lmfao!

  • Immature. You need to run more of your weekly mileage on concrete.

  • Correct. Some "experts" thought that if a mile were run in sub 4 minutes that the heart would burst.

  • hello roy this is

  • possibly the greatest accomplishment in man kind

  • I'll some African ran a faster than a 4 minute mile, 1000 years before, when a horny wildabeast started chasin him.

  • Yes, but they wouldn't if it hadn't been for Roger Banister. Runners had been trying to break the 4 minute mile mark 2000 years. Hellenistic Greeks used to tie themselves to the tails of bulls in an attempt to beat the equivalent distance. After Bannister 2 or 3 other runners broke the 4 minute mile in the same year. The only reason we now run under 4 minute miles is because Bannister showed that it was possible and removed the psychological barrier that kept 2000 years of runners from doing it.

  • Well, shiver me timbers.

  • ya ur right i wouldn't say it all psychological if he didnt do it some1 would have eventually. but u are correct for thousands of years scientists actually thought it was physically impossible to break the 4 minute mile. At the End of the race Bannister Collapsed to the ground, the original thought at the stadium was that he had died from exhaustion.

  • lol

  • With modern training, tracks and nutrition this is at least a 3:53 mile. Only a few people in the world can do that in any given year.

  • I already said shiver me timbers..

  • Also there are many amateur athletes today who work full time jobs and run very successfully.

  • not to knock the achievement, which may certainly be the most amazing athletic achievement yet, but Bannister was not a full time doctor. he was a medical student at the time.

  • he wasn't. he was a full time doctor for many years already before that record was broken.

  • what music did you use? send it to me on my youtube account

  • Chariots of Fire: Vangelis

  • lol people nowadays can break 4 minute miles easier because they are full time runners and probably dont have jobs...roger bannister was a full time doctor and struggled to find time to train. All the people in the Olympics train most of the day and have a handful of people to help them train, eat right, and tell them wat to do. Roger Bannister probably only had 1 person if that.

  • Vangelis - Chariots of Fire

  • wats the song called?

  • i just love running the mile in track for high school. whats the song called bru?

  • guys stop spamming this video this video is very touching

  • i can run a mile in 9 mins..

partly because im a lazy ass

  • he was a full time doctor and trained after work.........those were the good amateur days

  • Today is the anniversary! Amazing!

  • I can see the track from my bedroom window
