I have done a 700ft landing before in a Puchatek And L-13 Blanik. Too bad I cant fly the blaink for a while now. As long as you have enough runway and you keep your speed above 50 knots not allowing for headwind, you should be right to flare at your aiming point. :)
This is called a "high parasitic drag approach." It is used to lose altitude fast without gaining too much speed. The parasitic drag of the glider with the spoilers open is so much that the kinetic energy of the plane is dissipated rapidly and landing can be done at manageable speeds. Useful to know, but it is always better to prepare your approach correctly so you don't have to lose so much altitude on final.
In sweden you need to be 15 years old to fly, but you ned to be 16 to get the lisence to fly by your self. And we have to read some subejct first, like metheorology , aerodynamic and a few more subjects, after that you start to fly with a teacher and do about 60 starts and 60 exercises until your done.
@FlyWithMeeeee The plane in this video is going down with a glide angle of about 60 degrees. If you are running out of oxygen at high altitude, or if a cloud is sucking you up, this is the way to come down fast. For the passenger it feels like the first drop of a very high roller coaster.
@MINICLIPGAMER :)) The physical feeling is the same, however the pilot's brain knows what's going on and learns to ignore body signals. Also, the pilot recognizes he is in control of the plane and that he intends to start pulling to horizontal again. The passemger just hopes that the pilot knows what he's doing.
@SoaringHoosier true, when i was doing stall training, i never thought i could overcome the feeling and regain control. now after i learned to ignore it, its really fun.
Not so. The steep descent is only needed if the short field is surrounded by tall obstacles, like trees or power lines, and it is needed only in the last 100 feet after the obstacle has been cleared. There's never a need to make a high approach. If you ever HAVE to land like this you need to go back to flight school and refresh the section about planing landings. If you had to land in a short valley between two mountains, then you shouldn't have been flying there in the first place.
Very nice, but why not lose some more altitude on the downwind before turning base. Is it because you want to keep as much altitude as possible before crossing the r/w threshold in case something goes wrong on approach? It would be fun to be in that cockpit--space shuttle approach indeed!
Is this Estrella? Been a long time since I have been there but it sure reminds me of it?

Ok a slip big deal any competent sailplane pilot is required to know how to perform this maneuver.

Oh my god I would have needed the half way with a god slip in the final approach. Waste on You Tube.

i would reccormend the SZD 50 (i belive) Puchacz. 1000 ft. nose straigt down 190 km/t. because it can't overspeed when airbrakes are out.
it's also very fun doing it with your friends when they don't know it: "ehh aren't we a little hiiiAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

nice landing, but honestly , i wouldn't waste 800 feet for that. Keep it in the air as long as possible

Do I need to get specific training license to fly a winch launched glider ? If yes , for how long the training may take ?
True0Faith 2 years ago
@True0Faith Winch is not difficult. You will need a few launches 5 for takeoff and another 5 for emergency.

You will never be able to manage a correct speed when landing in a short field.

I thought short field landings required just this sort of skill - high approach and a steep descent.
jagara1 3 years ago
