I kinda get how he could hate something he did early in his career. In the same way I, as an artist, can't stand to even look at any of my old work without wanting to change it to better suit my skills now. He doesn't really have that option, as his work is a more public sort, and we fell in love with this song as it is.

Probably because he wanted to be a musician, and to be a musician you have to write songs, in most cases having to make due with whatever comes out.
