  • This movie is profound! It has so many layers and addresses so many issues. Most dominately how adults extreme religious beliefs, cruelity to children due to adult mental/physical tortures. Through the entire movie you are thinking as horrifying as all this is.....a world war is upon them tomorrow. What will happen to each character and in what way. The expressions on the childrens' faces and the sounds. They stay with you long after seeing this film. Brilliant work.

  • it kinds of leave you without answering the questions the movie starts with... it's weird.. the movie is not THAT bad as my friends thought.. but I don't know, it's not very very good either :P

  • I dont like that film!I can't understand the meaning...how to punish your children???

  • One of the very best films ive ever seen...

  • When I first saw this movie I hated it.But then on second thought it's enigmatic and it reveals human cruelty as in the end noone states who the culprit was just because Haneke wants to show that good and evil lies within everyone but he still gives a hint even through the title. "The White Ribbon"...The symbol of innocence that only children have and still just the ribbon itself can't offer them this quality.Noone would blame a group of children for commiting such terrible crimes would he?

  • @bobmarleyisgod1 YES! I finally figured it out. And I know who it is. Thanks!!!

  • It is so dark 0:37 - 0:39 you can't see ANYTHING! What does the boy see when he opens that door?

  • @ValleyMermaid: When you have a chance to see the film it's clear. He sees his father, who has hung himself in the barn, despondent over the death of his wife.

  • @aarfeld Thank you! Yes, I watched it a second time, and caught it. Very sad! And creepy.

  • I think it is a wonderful film. I liked the way Haneke showed the environment, the little details like the ribbon, the pinbox. God, Leonie Benesch's face... adorable. I don't think you could see such innocence nowadays, and she managed to do it so naturally. Haneke paid lots of atention to details. You think it's boring? Watch Bruce Willis then... Boom, bada boom... end of the story.

  • @AmericanPowerBase Fuck Jesus!

  • i suppose what the film was trying to say was that while germany in 1914 was becoming increasingly faced with both real and perceived threats from the outside world which eventually led to the outbreak of the first world war, the REAL threat or enemy lay within germany and german society (or bourgeois provincial society) itself which led to the rise of Hitler etc.

well, that is my simplistic reading of the film anyway :D

  • the sound at 1:20 sounded horrible and agonizing, humiliating and wrong.

I'm definetly gonna check this movie out lol

  • An excellent film.

  • waste of life bunch of incest and stuff wth

  • one word, "wow"

  • @UncleMcCrustyPoo wow. just wow.

  • 2010.10.09

  • Can somebody tell me the name of that hymn? I love liturgical music, provided it's reverential, even though I'm an avowed atheist. Excellent movie.

  • Man. This movie is so grandeur and superior in every way. The vastness of it leaves you thinking what emptyminded films are popular today. Even the "clever" ones.

  • I liked the movie, you need to pay attention and will find out how good the movie is

  • i read this movie first of all wants to show the youth of the nazi generation

  • I give it a A+...so unique. This is the story of that era in many parts of europe. The control of priest and fathers over the community and ultimately of the leaders in the entire state. Never the the kids answered to parents...and the only woman who confronts the doctor is slapped. A male dominated society with some ugly psychology involved. Now I think the pastor is the culprit??? thanks.

  • This is such a fantastic and artistic movie. It felt like entering another period in time with pictures that resembled classic paintings. What a masterpiece!!

  • Wtf? Wrost trailer ever for one of the best movie ever.

  • @worldofglasspain agreed... that was not a good trailer.

  • This was a good movie, but the characters were just too freaking stoic, to the point of robotism. I mean they are going to chop the poor girl's head off and she shows less emotion or concern than some average person at a dentists office.

  • Wrong German Movie, duh, I was thinking of the White Rose

  • i saw this movie yesterday.simply astonishing.i always enjoyed german cinema anyway, this one became a classic. i think it has to be one of hanekes masterpieces. it is a very captivating movie cause in the end you dont really care who made all these things!

  • Maravilhoso! Vi ontem e fiquei encantado com a fotografia, os atores.

It's an awesome movie, I saw it yesterday and it surprised me a lot.

  • I would take time out to watch this movie because it seems so carefully crafted and organic. A movie like this won't even pop up on most people's radar because it is foreign and doesn't have a Hollywood star, or doesn't create a sense of escapism. That is unfortunate.

  • But it will among savvy movie goers....it's nominated for two Oscars...believe me...to those that matter, this film will get exposure!

  • That is the beauty of it!

  • and the oscar goes to ...

  • I think you kinda need to work with the movie. it doesnt present something to you on a silverplate. you need to solve problems, you need to figure out the message. also this is a movie about the beginning of fascism. it's pictures are subtle and in that brutal. this is reality, no popcorn-entertaining-hollywood-tale.

  • There are many films that are hard to watch, but worth working through. This is not one of those films. This film is carefully set up by the filmmaker to leave you feeling frustrated, empty, and dissatisfied. It's not about fascism,or small town morality. It's only 'message' is nihilism.

  • well, you're allowed to have your opinion :) but I think in times of all pretty movies and 3Dism, this kind of movie is, in its language and style, a brave thing to do. its also a very complex movie with a HUGE love to the details. they casted people for 3 years or something like that. the acting, the costumes, the interiors are simply perfect. its absolutely realistic. its also the craft that fascinates me. yep.

  • @Funasenbaer: I think it's actually set in the period of July 1913 through August 1914. Beautifully filmed and acted, but what is it really trying to tell us?

  • @Funasenbaer: Is this movie really about the beginnings of Fascism? Did the children commit these crimes and grow up to become cruel Nazis? Or did the midwife Frau Wagner commit the crimes--lashing out for the cruel humiliation she suffers from the doctor? Or, is there another explanation? That's the enigma that the filmmaker leaves us.

  • Haha good job not getting it.

  • Obviously you need to watch a lot more movies in your life to understand what a good movie is...sigh

  • What a great movie. It's very beautiful. Even more beautiful than Avatar in it's simplicity.

  • seems like an anxiety-ridden movie, thats why I don't dare to see it, it takes a lot on me... But it must be a great movie if you look at the awards it has won.

  • look amazing

  • i will get the movie i think it will be good

  • i dont get what its about

  • The movie is a mystery. If the trailer gave it away, the movie would be ruined.

  • A mystery taking place in a German village right before WWI. Crimes are being committed, a schoolteacher is trying to determine if it is the cruel pastor, dominating baron, or sexually abusive doctor-all of whom are victims of the crimes.

  • i wanna see it!!!

  • I heard that this was amazingly good.

  • shit i gotto watch this movie

  • I just saw this movie, man is it good

I did not like the end but that is just me

  • looks like a classic.

  • U.S. release date is December 30th.

  • What's the song?!?!?!

  • @Ealgian

Song is called: "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott" Text von Martin Luther, Melodie von J.S.Bach

  • @toebinho amighty fortress is under God

  • @jakefree25 : no, it means OUR god is a mighty fortress

  • Right,

    unser = our

    unter = under

    I messed up!

  • Thanks toebinho!

  • Can't wait to see this!

  • INCREDIBLY good movie - makes the coen's latest movie look like it was made by a 5 year old

  • If you're talking about "A Serious Man," there is absolutely no way that is even possible, lol. I heard "The White Ribbon" was amazing, though.

  • If anyone knows the release date in the US, please let me know, thanks.

  • 12/30/09

  • Thanks.
