• I think there are fewer female atheists in general because:

    1. Women are more likely to be crowd followers for utilitarian reasons. Since theism is the popular idea that's what women go with.

    2. Women are generally more emotional than logical. God and religions are illogical psychological constructs created to make living a harsh and absurd life more emotionally palatable. Women instinctively choose the emotional benefits of belief and are blind to, or disregard, the illogicality of it.

  • @gromtkn Maybe, but on the other hand it seems that generally those who have been dealt the worst hands in life seem to be the most religious. Seeing no opportunity to improve their lot in reality they live in hope ...

  • @gromtkn thanks. The video had a pretty good rating until it got hit by a so-called Votebot. It doesn't matter.

  • google Doe's Account.

  • @Wintblash wha?

  • @Wintblash oh. I see. Moron

  • Women are raised to be stupid; males are raised to be intelligent. Finding a female who even KNOWS how to play chess is fucking HARD! It's all just society treating women like shit.

  • There's that, too.

  • It really sucks that there aren't a lot of female atheists on YT...

I'm one of the few, and I haven't even done any debate videos yet, lol.'

  • Cool! Subbed.

  • Testosterone. Females aren't as aggressive so they on average don't want to debate and argue about these issues than males.

  • Possibly! :-)

  • I'm a female atheist. And I have no problem speaking out, or debating. In fact, that's what I actively seek. Though I have so far refrained from making a video showing my face (I know many church-going people...probably not a good reason, but I'll have to think about the ramifications of going public like that).

Though I do understand where you're coming from. I guess I'm one of the minority females.

  • Cheers! And you gotta do what you're comfortable with. It took me quite a while to get over that hurdle. That's why my first few vids are just pictures and clips.

  • Women are constrained by the viscious attacks and personal abuse they know they will be subjected to if they dare to challenge male supremacy - enforced by male elites, church, state, military over centuries

  • If you don't actively question things out in the open, you most likely won't have as much of an opportunity to find the fault in believing in the supernatural. Pretty simple. Also, I think women tend to focus more on warm and fuzzy emotional concepts than men, which can often have spiritual connections. And you thought what YOU had to say was controversial? :)

  • Thanks for the contribution. Good comments. Cheers.

  • We still think in the cave dweller terms of hunters/gatherers when there really is no need to. The differences between men and women have been decreasing over the last few decades, and they will probably continue to do so.

In addition to women not speaking out as much as men, there also actually are more male atheists than female ones, and this is for similar reasons.

  • Great video. I think the biggest part is the combativeness thing. The average male likes a good fight or debate, while the average woman doesn't. Don't get me wrong; I've known plenty of women who love to debate, but on average, it's true. I think that you hit the nail on the head when you said that small natural differences have been exacerbated by society.

  • I think you did a great job...I do think there is more in addition, which I cover in my responses.... Thank you! Subscribed!

  • Thanks for comment and subscription!

  • ....there are female atheists out there, believe me! We just prefer to go out shopping, clubbing and talking about naughty things than to talk about religion all the time. It can be a downer. But then, because we don't talk about being an atheist (most of the time) does not mean we don't care. We do, we express it differently.

  • Thanks for the comments. Er.... Have we met before on EE?

  • I don't think this should be made out to be something so difficult when really it isn't. I am a female atheist. It has nothing to do with genes and science mumbo-jumbo. Women in history have always been opressed and told to shut their mouth and do as their told. I think this is still a big part in the southern states in the US. I believe it has a lot to do with that and how they were raised by their family.

  • This is just me, but as a female atheist, the reason I don't make videos or speak up often is the third one you mentioned - concerns about my reputation. I'm scared that if I appear on video or even speak in a video, people I know will get wind of it, and it'll change how I'm viewed (I live in TX). I think there's a double standard in society - males can speak their mind and still get what they want, but for women to succeed, they have to play by the rules and keep their thoughts private.

  • Sad but probably true :-(

  • Gender Specific Biological Imperatives - Correct

Gender Derived Mental and Behaviour Patterns - Conjecture(I may make a video)

Statstically Derived Gender Competitiveness - Also Conjecture

Great video as usual though :D

  • Here's an additional conjecture of my own: that women tend to be better at establishing friendships and support systems in real life, and so are possibly less compelled to seek out other like-minded people online.

  • Yes, that seems quite reasonable.

  • I agree with your conjectures, both on the small offset of the two bell curves (which, of course, makes no reliable statement about any individual male or female) and on the cultural effects on "tipping" toward or away from an online forum such as this.

  • thanks

  • statistics is awesome!! I love being an outlier! We need to spread the word that "Science is interesting!"

  • It's all about "The pleasure of finding things out" as Richard Feynman put it.

  • Bravo! Very well explained, carefully stated, etc.... And probably exactly right.

  • I don't know. I hope I'm at least thinking in the right direction.

  • Spot on, bro. I think your point about competitiveness has some validity. I'm not sure about biological differences being that valid with the choice of religion, however.

  • Agreed, and sorry if it came across that way; I should have clarified that comparing males to females I wouldn't expect there to be any significant difference in percentages of those who are atheist. But competitiveness causes people to be more vocal about it.

  • Exactly. I can see women trying to find the truth in debates, which is what you should do, but I can't see many women entering debates just to "pwn" people. Maybe I'm still a bit sexist? I try not to be.

  • I kind of see the point (being a female atheist).. I think a lot of women just really aren't interested in fighting back and forth in debate, especially about something as passion-raising and divisive as religion.

  • "Some ideas on why there are fewer female atheists on YouTube"

    Female atheists are smarter?

  • Thanks for your input. This has given me some new things to think about.

  • You're welcome. Now I have to think about some questions to ask :-)

  • People look at me and see a male atheist. They don't know about the woman crying on the inside...

Seriously, I have nothing to say. I'm just leaving a comment to boost your ratings. Excellent video. 5*

  • Thanks!

    (inside, I'm screaming)

  • LOL!

  • Roze very good points. and i love the bell curve do not hear about it as much sinc ei left school.

  • :-)

  • God is so going to roast your ass, She won't stand for this sort of outrage!

  • Seriously though .... all of the issues you raise should apply to the general population of youtube videos, and although I've not done a study, my sense is that the extreme disparity in the atheist community is not present in the wider community, so while your reasons are real, I think the normalise across the general you tube community.

  • I think they normalise ...

I draw on my theistic experience for the reason. Women were always more present in Church, on the mission field and in prayer or study groups. Women are simply more religious, possibly because of the biological caring urge. I'd say that is the primary reason, and rather ironic given the patriarchial nature of the big 3.

  • Cool vid by the way:-)

  • I'm not competitive at all, and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise.

  • we get quite alot of female atheist in our debate room

  • Certainly, and YouTube too has quite a few. It's a good thing and I hope it encourages more to speak out.
