Opium used to be legal in the US. I doubt that the poppy trade is something it is important to worry about.

In terms of the Taliban, until they gave the pipeline project to a non-US company, the US gave them foreign aid. Robert Young Pelton wrote about the Taliban before the 2002 invasion, and he noted how they were mellowing from their religious extremism. Folks being threatened tends to bring out the extremism.
