This episode always makes me so sad, that I want to climb in a boat in the middle of a desert and cry until my boat is sailing in an ocean made up entirely of my tears.
this was one of the saddest moments in star trek tng for sure. Data had to let his daughter go and he couldnt understand what she was feeling it was just so sad :(
I have never cried during a movie or a television show, but scenes like this scene have always brought me close, and always at least made me whimper in sadness.
There is more raw beauty, emotion and though in this one Star Trek episode than exists in all of television and film today. Goes to show how amazing TNG was.
I cry everytime during this scene, and the moments leading up to it such as the Admiral coming out of the room: "I've never seen someone's hands moving so fast...", or something like that.
Oh my, this choked me up bad when it was brand new, and it still does today. If this clip had the "Thank you for my life" line, I would have no chance of not crying...
I have no doubt Data took wonderful care of his daughter...now, does that show that he loved her or was it just a sense of duty and understanding that that is what you are SUPPOSED to do when you have a child/children? A parenting book may tell you everything you need to know on how to care for your child but cannot show you how to love. That's the most logical I can get with this...my human nature (and as a parent) says, "Phooey!! He did love her...he just doesn't recognize the emotion"
well he obviously did earlier in the episode the guy from star fleet helped him and when he came out to tell the others she wouldnt make it he said datas hands were working so incredibly fast trying to save her
Data has directives built in2 his programming 2 further his development. Some of those directives could b viewed as goals i.e. using humanity as a role model. This results in him using the emotion chip given 2 him by Dr Tsung. So u could liken Datas unfulfilled directives 2 an android wish list & due 2 the nature of artificial intelligence, data would b even more compelled 2 obey those directives than any person would obey their desires. So Data wishes - but without the associated emotions.
The word "feelings" has more than one meaning. When Data says he has no feelings, he means that he has no emotions. He cannot feel happy, sad, angry, envious, etc. He does, however, have wishes, desires, and strong opinions, which are different definitions of the same word.
I would say human as opposed to more human and maybe the "glitch" was her soul that was not ready or couldn't inhabit an artificial body but was instead meant for a human body. What would be interesting would be if they made another movie where Data caught up with his daughter through the adoption of a human child where the child was the age (about 15 or 16) his artificial daughter was then. And that she was his true daughter b/c her soul inhabited that body at conception.
"i will feel it for both of us " was kinda overkill but all in all a great episode

I wish one of the scenes of Generations had shown Data crying because he'd finally found the ability to feel the loss of his daughter.

This episode is such a tearjerker. This scene especially.
The other scene that stands out is when Data tells Crusher he is unable to love Lal, to which Crusher replies (under her breath)
"Why do I find that so hard to believe."
I agree with ramsay....he did love her.

Wow, how Brent managed not too show emotion at all amazes me. I would've been crying if I were him lol.
Just shows how awesome he is.

He manages to convey emotion without actually showing emotion. That, to me, is what is truly awesome about him!

How can Data "wish" he could feel something if he has no feelings? Isn't wishing a feeling?

Not sure what a soul is or if it exists at all. I'd just say she had all that mattered :)

I believe what caused her system to shut down was her inability to process the feelings she was experiencing.

Although Data's daughter was quite fond of him, Data stood confused when told, "I love you father."
