  • what happens to either a bottom of a shoe or a sticky note

  • On a Bill Nye the science guy video I saw that he had put marshmallows into liquid nitrogen and he popped it into his mouth immediately after taking it out of the nitrogen and some smoke/ steam would come put of his mouth and nose now is this really possible or is it just a trick of the camera?

  • @Weapon283 It's not a trick. It's the same that happens when you see your breath on a cold day.

  • would it be safe to eat it afterwards?

  • @thelovelybones0521 We did eat it afterwards, so, yes.

  • taste the rainbow is from skittles. you should freeze those!

  • Whyy did you use a delicious pink one and not a yellow?

  • @TheEmerald Because the pink ones are icky.

  • @jeffersonlab would your teeth shatter if you put them in liquid nitrogen

  • @TheFindip Not going to find out...

  • EAT IT! EAT IT! EAT IT!

  • @insideoutboy100 We did.

  • Since that starburst didnt break when it wasnt froze but when you put it in the liquid nitrogen then dropped it it broke.SOOO if you put your finger in it then hit it the tabe t break.Ouch and lol if that happened

  • Couldn't you use Kelvin(I think that's how you spell it) to tell the temperature of liquid nitrogen( may be a stupid question)

  • @Dukey8668 You can use any temperature scale you like to tell the temperature of something.

  • this title is misleading...

  • @MysticalKey1 Life goes on.

  • can you actually eat that after its in nitrogen?o.o

  • @FantasyMel As long as you let it warm up, sure. There's no chemical change. It's still a Starburst.

  • @JeffersonLab Did you ever do skittles?

  • @DOGNRUNNN Yes, but not on film. They don't do anything interesting.

  • I LOVE YOUR VIDS

  • @luckdog19008 Thanks!

  • what if i froze my hand with liquid nitrogen and then i dropped it, would it brake like that? lol

  • @Emoneylance Probably not since you still have bones helping to hold things together. Plus, big blocks of frozen stuff is really difficult to break.

  • jefferson lab, what would happen if you poured liquid nitrogen onto lava, or something like a REALLY hot plate,

  • @TeHKRiiNG The nitrogen would boil very quickly. The hotter the thing it hits is, the faster it will boil.

  • how did it taste?

  • @GreenDay5119 Like a normal Starburst.

  • liquid nitrogen and gummy bears!!!!!!!

  • what would happen if u ate it after?

  • @GrimmReaper115 We did eat it. At least, once it had warmed up again.

  • Now eat it.

  • @kaaaybraah We did.

  • I am surprised (in a good way) that the author of this 35,000views video still respond to the comments. This is web 2.0 right here

  • @laMarieSou Since we don't post new videos frequently, the lest we can do is to try to be active in the comments.

  • @JeffersonLab More than that, I personally really appreciate not only that you maintain an active web presence but also that you continue to put out great videos and put up with those of us who are less appreciative of what you do.

  • what happens if you put glass in ln2 (liquid nitrogen)

  • @wolfgagger If it's regular glass, usually nothing good. Thermal stresses are usually big enough to cause the glass to crack or shatter.

  • Are they edible after being in the nitrogen?

  • @lilyliover89 Yes, once they thaw out.

  • Did you just say "Starbursts really aren't that special?"

    APOLOGIZE

    NOW

  • I bet it would have tasted good, like a really cold popsicle.

  • Is liquid nitrogen toxic?

  • @xxmidorifarmerxx No, it's not toxic. Nitrogen is essentially inert. Liquid nitrogen will freeze you, but it won't poison you.

  • @JeffersonLab so u jus become an ice statue instead of getting poison

  • @xxmidorifarmerxx Yea, but inhaling nitrogen under big pressure can cause nitrogen narcosis which's some kind of instantaneous disease. Especially divers know about this. It shows under 30 meters deep or more. Then you're acting like drunked. Every 10 meters under 30 meters in water is like one glass of martini. It's called "Martini effect". Also if you emerge too fast, nitrogen which was cumulated in your tissues will instantanously isolate and you may even die. Sorry for my horrible English :)

  • Why does no one watch the whole video before making comments about how you "did something wrong" it seems to be a trend in your video's comment sections.

  • this is all cool and stuff but the real question is: but does it blend? that is the question here XD im so random right now x3 but you should do skittles at sometime lol

  • WHAT DOES IT MEAN?!?!

  • what would happen if you poured liquid nitrogen on something putting out incredible electric waves, like an arc conductor ??

  • @anonismorefun Nothing, for the most part.

  • @JeffersonLab how bout on freshly radioactive atoms? is it also unaffected by radioactivity?

  • @anonismorefun Temperature does not have a measurable effect on radioactivity.

  • @JeffersonLab thanks xD was just curious

  • 0:33 Oh no! now it's gonna freeze!

  • Try freezing play-doh.

    ....I love play-doh..

  • can it still be eaten?

  • @toph19971 It can, and it was.

  • hmmm may i request that you try the same thing but with a medium sized rock ?

  • I subscribed to you. I love liquid nitrogen. I wish i had some.

  • its that minus 321 degrees Celsius Fahrenheit or kelvin?

  • @guyman001 There's no such thing as -321 ˚C or -321 K. It's -321 ˚F which is equivalent to -196 ˚C or 77 K.

  • Y U NO TASTE RAINBOW ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)

  • now eat it! XD

  • @robloxian5897 We did once it thawed out.

  • ;p@JeffersonLab yummers :)

  • So many comments about the title....Why don't you do another one on Skittles?

  • @lisa850331 Skittles turn out to be fairly boring. They don't shatter, crack or split. They just sit there, looking cold and slightly tasty.

  • @JeffersonLab Em.....Okay then~ What about things to do with AQA Additional Science? ;)

  • @lisa850331 I have no idea what that is...

  • do lego

  • What would happen if you eat it? Would you freeze to death or nothing?

  • @theplaylister2 If you should eat it while it's still cold, it'll freeze little bits of the inside of your mouth, but it's just not massive enough to cause any real damage. If you wait for it to warm back up, it's just like eating a regular Starburst.

  • why do you only do liquid nitrogen

  • @mcgigglefaries We do a lot of liquid nitrogen because we have a lot of it here, but it's not the only thing we do. Visit our channel page for the full list.

  • haha corny intro

  • whyd you use the good kind of starburst? shoulda used a nasty yellow one that no one likes

  • Misleading title.

  • @KingdomheartsII Does is really matter that much that they weren't Skittles? If you really need to know, Skittles don't do anything. You just end up with cold Skittles.

  • @JeffersonLab

Skittles are chewy inside. You can show the same thing with them, without being misleading.

  • @KingdomheartsII But it's not the same thing. Skittles don't do anything when they are frozen. They don't shatter like Starbursts do.

When this was being developed, the 'Taste the Rainbow' slogan was honestly mistaken as Starburst's. When the mistake was discovered, we decided to keep it since it gave us something to use for the exiting dialogue.

  • @JeffersonLab

All I'm saying is that the title is false. What about that my comment on your Freezing Nitrogen video? Why wasn't it posted?

  • @KingdomheartsII In any event, it's not worth losing sleep over.

If it wasn't approved, you comment most likely violated our community standards.

  • @KingdomheartsII If you watched this video past 0:56, you would know why it's titled "Freeze the Rainbow".

  • should have used skittles

  • Is it poisonous?

  • @HardKore5250 Nope!

  • @byehiguy Correct.

  • Freeze the rainbow, Taste the rainbow

  • I saw you....Our Class went May 12-13 2011 Mrs.Sandy Kiln Creek Elementary School VA,,,,,I love Jefferson Lab & the shirts you gave us!

  • could you eat it?

  • @Jeffersen08 We did, actually. Once we let it warm up a bit.

  • @Jeffersen08 taste the rainbow!

  • Why did that starburst even shatter?

  • @music47jazz If we have a chemist out there, they can probably answer this better... I -think- it has to with reducing the available (thermal) energy for the molecules in the starburst to break and reform bonds. If there are a large number of nearly equivalent bonds that could be made, changing the structure is easily done. If there is a wide gap in energies, it's more difficult. I think. Feel free to correct me on this, internet.

  • Comment removed

  • @music47jazz Are you kidding? It's an experiment! And it's candy! What's not to love?

  • Ong that would be so cool if it worked with people!

  • The Rainbow is for skittles, not starburst.

  • @DonaldHellsing Finish watching the video.

  • @JeffersonLab Yeah, but they didn't even freeze skittles... Misleading video name.

  • "what happens to a starburst when you put it in liquid nitrogen?"

the same thing that happends to every thing else!

  • @nicklebackfans9 Not true at all. Lots of things could care less. Some things explode, like in the video we made of the exploding rubber stopper. Everything that gets put into liquid nitrogen gets cold, but not everything behaves the same.

  • I want to eat it :)

  • @hunt3rxwl Just let them warm up first or they'll stick to your tongue.

  • Do they taste any different?

  • @thatguyuknow1 No, not really.

  • Rainbow? shouldnt that be for skittles?

  • @vytong Did you watch the video all the way through?

  • @JeffersonLab yes, i commented before i finished.

  • i hope you can demonstrate what will happen when you eat it after it warms back to room temperature.

  • What if your eat the rainbow.

  • @cardshifter The frozen bits of Starburst? They freeze to your tongue and it's a bit uncomfortable.

  • sound so sarcastic lol

  • why a mac lab?

  • @zasx20 Why not a Mac lab? Although, you may not be seeing them in future videos. We're planning on retiring half of them because we're getting 32 iPads. Not sure how the room will be rearranged when that happens.

  • I like these ime subscribing :)) keep um comming plzz

  • I have a great idea for liquid nitrogen and it's on the topic of sugar. Freeze some jello with it.

  • ive used liquid nitrogen before its awsome i got to freeze flowers and bananas for my middle schools magnet night :)

  • 321 degrees?! That's below absolute zero!

  • @Chmielok That's in degrees Fahrenheit. It's -196 degrees Celsius. Still way above absolute zero.

  • @JeffersonLab thats why i hate celsius it's confusing.

  • i love you guys,

    ur awesome

  • I LOVE YOU GUYS

  • YOU GUYS LOVE TO PLAY WITH NITROGEN

  • @polos505 Yes. Yes we do!

  • Where's da new vids D:

  • @dudeyourvideosucks For new filming, we are effectively shut down until May. The Lab is having an open house on May 1 and Joanna is insanely busy getting ready for that. That said, we already have preliminary footage for the next video (a 1/2 life experiment) and have shot a quick liquid nitrogen thing as a fun bookend to the 1/2 life experiment. I also have old footage that I can cobble something together from that may get posted before May.

  • LOL I ADMIRE U GUYS

  • :O i was eating a starburst whn i was watching this!!!

  • GUYS!!!!! I KNOW WHAT YOU SHOULD DO!

freeze a tennis racket and a ball, then hit the frozen ball with the frozen tennis racket! plz

  • Hmm i would like to see a tennis racquet put in liquid nitrogen and then hit a serve with it.

  • @LBTennis tennis is so ___
