Youth doesn't excuse drunk driving either. Many people have never done it. Parents must drill it into their kids heads that if they do drink, they must NEVER drive.

Almost all people who become seriously ill/disabled/scarred are abandoned by many of the people closest to them...friends, family and even spouses. They suffer horrible, chronic pain, lose the ability to maintain careers they love, are denied work they can do because people are uncomfortable being around them, are mistreated by doctors and other medical professionals, etc...

Drunk driving law enforcement doesn't work and will never work. Most likely because alcoholic beverages are big business, and big business doesn't care who gets hurt so long as they make their millions. The only way might be much more severe punishment. There's nothing stopping the guy from driving drunk again, even without a license, he'll get a slap on the wrist.

No, she's not OK now. She's severely disfigured, has very little vision (and in just one eye), she relies on her dad for round the clock care, she hasn't dated in 11 (?) years since the tragedy, she battles severe depression and lives a hellish life. Has no friends, they all moved on.
She said some positive things on Oprah (because Oprah insists on eliciting anything positive from anyone) but you could tell that she's in her own mental hell. poor sweet girl. :O(
