  • Vanilla Ice is a "Darker tone"?

  • how about casey jones

  • What about usagi? Was he part of the comic too?

  • @Minimoonfan123 Yes, but Usagi Yojimbo was its own comic, written and drawn by Stan Sakai under a different publisher. It occasionally crossed over with TMNT.

  • Teenage mutant ninja turtles rule in general.

  • Comment removed

  • Sailor Moon did kind of beat TMNT

  • @Minimoonfan123 Sailor Moon isn't even close to beating TMNT... TMNT started nearly 10 years earlier, and has been going strong ever since.

  • Definitive Overall Turtles: Marage Comic Books

Definitive Lighthearted Turtles: 1987 TV Show

Definitive Serious Turtles: 2003 TV Show

To be honest does anyone know if the orginal Marage Turtles Comics have been reprinted as Graphic Novels or have been collected as an Omnibus?

  • @snakes3425 Many times over the years. There's a new hardcover collection of them coming out shortly as well.

  • @Zaranyzerak There were two new series after the 2003 series. They are TMNT Back to the Sewers and TMNT Fast Forward. Have u seen those?

  • @webcamfan2569 Those are actually Season 6 and 7 of the 2003 series. I've seen a bit of Fast forward, but not Back to the Sewers as it was never released on DVD.

  • @Zaranyzerak

I noticed that, after the Season 4 set they started releasing the show by Story Arc title instead of Season Number

  • @Zaranyzerak Have u seen all 3 90s movies? Tmnt TMNT 2 and the Secret of the Ooze and Tmnt # Turtles are goin Back in Time?

  • @dipsythe3rd OMG same here except I did like the new movie

  • Turtles Forever! Cowabanga!! XD

  • good news zaranyzerak season 9 of the original tmnt cartoon is coming to dvd this august 16 super cool

  • It's interesting how everybody that grew up watching the old series tend to hate the new series and how everybody that grew up watching the new series tend to hate the old one. In my opinion, the comics are obviously the best, but the new series is better FOR A MODERN AUDIENCE and for fans of the COMICS because it's truer to the comics. As good a show as the old one probably was for the 80's, it just wouldn't hold up if they tried to sell it to kids today, who expect darker and edgier stuff.

  • its interesting to note that the 1987 cartoons first 5 episodes were done over in japan by toei animation, who did the animation for those episodes, so the first 5 episodes count as anime. every other episode was done by an american animation company that i dont know the name of.

  • My wife was an animator on that show. She can still draw 'em perfectly :)

  • @omolawton that's freaking awesome!

  • @omolawton Send me a some pictures then!!!!

  • do you know anything about the region 2 dvd? Will a region 2 dvd work in the US?

  • @zooyorker1177 Only if you have a region-free player that coverts PAL format video to NTSC.

  • @Zaranyzerak ok thanks. I asked because I wanted to buy the one 25th anniversary 3 disc set of seasons one and two, it's in a black case.

Have you heard anything about them releasing this in a region 1 format?

  • I would say the cartoon is the definitive version because not only is it the most iconic in terms of pop culture but it is also BETTER than the original comic. More fun, better defined characters, better villains and awesome adventures. Obviously there is room for the both but I wouldn't call the series "watered down" or try to criticise it for not be like the comic. For me it look the idea of the comic and made it better. The only thing I dislike about the series is how useless B&R are. :-)

  • 2009 was dragonball's 25th anniversary also

  • Have you ever read the Image series of the Turtles? I bought the first issue off of my English teacher for a buck and thought it was fucking badass

  • turtles forever is comin to dvd august 24.2010

  • I remember watching the TMNT 1987 cartoon, I then became interested in the original comic. I got the first issue.

  • i love the tmnt the old and the new

  • the cgi movie was basass!!!

  • Well, love it or hate it, the 2003 series is MUCH more faithful to the original comic (which was never intended for kids). In fact, many of the stories are adapted straight out of the old comics. The 80's series was seriously watered down and re-tooled to make it kid-friendly.

  • @Zaranyzerak Yet it's the 80s series that is the most memorable because it decided to be original and use great fourth-wall conscious humour to reel in the kids and keep them entertained.

  • @ZipZagginGallifrey You only say that because it's what YOU grew up with. It's memorable to you because it's well, something you remember from your childhood. The generation who grew up with the newer turtles will likely be far less endeared to the 80s series vs the 2003 series, seeing it as "cheesy" and "lame" by comparison.

  • @Zaranyzerak The Only they Need is Make Leonardo Versus Raphael in Shredder Form So it can fit it follow the Comics. Becuase Raphael Gets alot of Raged up for Leonardo being Leader i think or some other reason. but they Need to make it! i Just hope Nick Dont Crash The Series Or then i will Burn their Place apart.!!

  • Turtles are awesome, I heard they rereleased the seventh season all together, Zaranyzerak what would you get the seperate ones with those figures or get the new one without; do you know if there are any other differences?. Keep up the great work on the reviews!

  • u are right the turtles had an entire section made for them. i remember going to toys r us and half the shelf was gone

  • What about Pokemon? It took over the world..world of kids :P But yeah, TMNT was amazing big but so was Pokemon man!

  • Meh, still not as big. Turtles is STILL going and has just as much enthusiasm now as it did 25 years ago. Pokemon came, exploded, then died. Oh sure, there's a niche fanbase still around, but it's nowhere near as huge as the continually growing fanbase of TMNT.

Plus the TV shows ran waaay longer than Pokemon - The 80's cartoon was 10 seasons, the 2003 cartoons was 7, there was a 1 season show in the 90's, the comics are STILL going (since 1984!), the toys keep coming back...it goes on and on.

  • Even at their respective peaks, Turtles was waaaayyy bigger than Pokemon ever was.

  • Yeah no I agree with you. But I still think you should think twice about this. When we talk about the show, Pokemon is still running, it's on it's 10th season now and it's going to come a lot more seasons. The games are still coming out every year, it's still coming out new trading cards and so on. So I would say that TMNT is amazing, and it's the biggest thing ever, BUT, I think Pokemon can maybe become bigger.. Cause they have not stopped the anime yet :)

  • Baxter Stockman actually reappeared in later comics when he had his robots lobotimize him and have his brain transplanted to a powerful exo-suit he stole, and turned himself into a virus. The 2003 episode where he intterupts the fight between the Turtles and Shredder is a reference to that.

  • And they're working ona reboot of the TMNt franchise

  • turtle power MOTHER FUCKERS lolhahahahahahahaha

  • Spongebob had 10 seasons.

  • Okay. Still not as huge as the Turtles were in their heyday, though...

  • Ah, you mentioned a sequel to the CGI movie. Well, they planned on doing that at one point, but that's long since been canceled. However, what they ARE doing is a live-action reboot movie that's set to come out in 2011.

Also, there's an 80-minute animated movie that's a crossover between the 1987 cartoon and the 2003 cartoon that's set to premiere on TV this fall. There's nothing known about it being released on DVD or Blu-ray yet, though, as Mirage has yet to find a distributor.

  • Nice! Too bad about the CGI sequel, I actually really enjoyed that one (especially the long overdue scrap between Leo and Raph!)

I just heard about the live action origin retelling/reboot recently, didn't know about the animated crossover movie though! I want to see all of those things. :)

  • Yay! someone else who loved the CGI movie! I adored it! it rocked! sure the villan was far fetched- but the dynamic of the turtles was AWESOME!

  • @Lithiel The plot felt a bit shallow but the voice acting and characterization of the turtles was PERFECT! I watch it just for that.

  • great review thus far. i know many people have grown up with the original ninja turtles, and those are the ones there familar with. but still, gets annoying.

can't wait to see the rest of this review. im also a fan of the ninja turtles, not just the classic but the ninja turtles as a whole. can't wait to hear/see more about the up-coming film

  • This video is soooo helpfuly, thank you very much!

  • Cool video. Interesting to hear about the comic book as I have only seen the cartoons.

  • The comics are really well done, and very dark. Really good read, you need to read it.

  • Zaranyzerak - I love your videos! Each one is a mini history lesson of pop-culture. I've imagined a retooling of your show beginning with the Fawlty Towers theme and a narrator in a British accent saying: "And now for another slice of the popular culture pie with your host, Zaranyzerak" Keep up the great work!

  • Turtle Power all the way. I bloody love this show. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!

I want 'em all on DVD but its confusing and a little overwhelming. Going to your next video now of course!

  • star wars have a lot of toys

  • Yeah, but I'm really just talking about cartoon franchises in this case. Star Wars was also pretty much dead in the time period that TMNT was king. It didn't come back until 1997 when the original trilogy was re-released as the Special Editions. Since then, it's been huge. But at the time of the Turtles, there was a whole generation of kids who didn't even know what Star Wars WAS...

  • Have you done a Voltron review mate? That would be cool

  • I have indeed! I did a three-parter about the Lion Force DVD Tins. Here's part 1:

    watch?v=AqTz9a80YHg

The subsequent parts are video responses, so you can just link through from one to the next.

  • hey Sean are you gonna do a review on the x-men dvds next iam looking forward to hearing your thoughts on them, i love your reviews you know alot of stuff and thats cool, great review keep up the great work.

  • I hope these cartoon DVD sets are re-released properly. I plan on getting TMNT cartoons sets on DVD when that happens.

  • Well, Volume 1 and the Season sets (Seasons 4 - 7) are done properly, it's really just Volumes 2-6 that could do with a re-release.

  • I have been waiting a while for this and was going to import them, but now the UK is finaly getting the dvd. And much better done then the Region 1 dvds. TMNT 25th Anniversary dvd is coming out this month containing first 2 seasons and 4 episodes not shown on TV.

  • Yep, I talk about the R2 release vs the R1 release of Season 1 and 2 in Part 2.

  • Pokemon in its prime came close to Turtles success but nothing ever quite got their again

  • did you enjoy the x-men dvds i hope to see a video about it soon

  • good answer

  • hi z man when is part 2

  • awesome vid!.and plz show the comics in the next vid

  • Awesome video, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles rock`s, Hope the new movie in 2011 is a clean live action movie, can`t wait. Pluss, they are remaking Turtles In Time, The game all we turtles fans loved on the super nintendo!

  • cool intro rant

  • OH DUDE! I TOTALLY AGREE ABOUT THE CGI MOVIE! A lot of people were confused about it and even the nostalgia critic wasn't a fan, but the movie was pretty damn good and YES! The fight between Raph and Leo was a LONG TIME COMING, and I was SO PUMPED when I saw that! w00t!

Some people are like "why are they fighting?"......to which I have to ask, DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHO THE NINJA TURTLES ARE?! DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THEM?! COME ON, MAN!

  • Oh yes, there will be another live-action TMNT movie!

  • Awesome video. I personally also love the Turtles. I haven't read too much of the comic...but you made me want to go out and get some of the collections and maybe pick up some of the current series. I also love the movies (I really loved the CG one) and both of the cartoons. And I love the old beat'em up videogames, they were awesome to play with friends. Thanks for bringing back all the great memories.

  • esplendido, 5/5, simplemente original, saludos desde mexico.

  • Do you have any toys? I know that transformers took a good bit of the shelves, and I remember a time in the 90s when star trek and star wars took up a ton of shelf space in the toys.

  • cant wait for part 2.

  • Do you like the Ninja Turtles The Next Mutation live action tv show?

  • I loved the TMNT action figures as a kid. I tried to keep up with them but Playmates Toys kept pumping out every God damn possible turtle theme they could think of!

Space cadet turtles, Military, Rock n' roll, Trolls, Samurai, Old west, rappin' and I think they even had comic book artist Jim Lee based turtles... and the list goes on. A childs piggy bank could not keep up with all the madness!

I remember having epic battles with Casey Jones vs Rat King and Leo vs Bebop and Rocksteady :)

  • @NothinUsual They did the same thing with the 2003 toys, but thankfully it wasn't that crazy. The toys actually made sense. I just stuck with the real versions of each figure.

  • You knowledge never fails to amaze to me, loved the show as kid. A Season 1 & 2 is coming out here in the UK soon, very tempted :)

  • I`m holding out for the four-movie boxset on Blu-Ray that`s coming out in August.

Always wanted the movies, and the packaging for the Blu set is awesome.

  • The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is awesome.

I have the first two games on the NES, those are still alot of fun to play. I managed to get a reprint of the first issue, I sometimes look for an original.

  • Awesome, sir! I cannot believe how much you know again about that show.

Here in Germany the show was called Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles for some reason. And of course I loved it as a kid. It was my favorite show besides the Thudnercats.

I do own a German issue of the very first Turtles comic BTW. The gritty style in it is really great and so much different from the show. I saw the show before the comic too, so I was quiet shocked with the violence in the comicbook.

  • hey whats wrong with the camera, your other videos have a better picture quality?

  • Nothing's wrong with it... It's possible the high quality and HD versions hadn't finished processing when you watched it. The "normal" quality version appears first, and the better quality versions appear anywhere from several minutes to several HOURS later. I see now the HQ and HD versions are up.

  • Just a thought man.

  • Gahhh haha yes it's here mahahaha finally. There was some stuff in this part that I knew and some stuff I didn't fantastic as always. So can't wait for the rest of these Z-Man! BTW just real quick thnking about what we've been pming about have you ever thought about doing a ulead tutorial? The one's that are up suck! I know that a lot of it you have to learn by doing but maybe just some stuff on cuting clips together & overlay ya know getting things to show up on screen when you want them to

  • really awsome video. 200,000,000 x 1,000,000,000,001

  • OMG! So quick! Thank You for fulfilling our requests! 5/5. As always!

  • The only version of the turtles that was TRULY crap was the live-action series that had that fifth turtle Venus which was made by the same people that made the Power Rangers(They even guest starred in the Power Rangers once) as well as the third live-action film where they time travel to ancient Japan. Other then that, the Turtles were cool.

  • Too true - on the official site, thhey've had some unpleasant things to say about "that girl Turtle" from time to time. Needless to say, there's no love lost as far as that incarnation went.

When i first heard about the third movie, I thought it sounded like a cool idea - "The Turtles in Samurai days? Awesome!" There had been time travel stories in the comics form time to time (pun! whee!). Then I saw it. Ye Gods what happened... AVGN did a hilarious review of it!

  • zaran, did you ever watch the x-men animated series? I believe it began airing in 1992. It just came out on dvd, and I'm thinking about buying it. The first and second volumes are available at best buy for only 20 dollars.

  • cant wait for part 2. i hope you will mention Casey Jones.

  • I have read alot of the old comics they were brutal in the comics. I am a huge huge fan of the cartoon and movies i think everyone my age was. I just seen season 7 at wal-mart yesterday they split it into four disc with a turtle action figure in each. Shredder gets his head cut off in the comic lol

  • Overall I loved the way you went in depth and explaned the differences between the various versions that were out at the time. :)

  • I think it's awsome that I share my 25th birthday with so many successfull 80's franchises. ^_^ Funnily enough because of the anniversery the 1987 series of Turtles is due out on DVD in the UK on the 25th of May. With a 3 disk boxset which will include seasons 1 and 2 (the first 18 episodes), plus 4 bonus episodes (which I think is a Region 2 re-release of Lionsgate's original DVD's) and another more budgeted title, which will just have 3 episodes.

  • thanks sean loved ur review keep up the good work man

  • the key is the promotion...pokemon is the biggest show of all time...there were pokemon toys...pokemon cards...pokemon taps with the chips...everything was about pokemons...so yeah...pokemon///

  • ZARANYZERAK, any thought of upgrading Army of Darkness Screw Head Blu-Ray? Here is hoping that the upcoming Ninja Turtles Blu-Ray set will come with good extras.

  • love the blooper at the end

  • tmnt is cool

  • The first 25 Episodes were just released on DVD here in Germany. And the Set is pretty cheap, with 25 Euros of price, you really get what you pay for x3

  • I think Pokemon was as succesful as turtles, but I'm not sure.

  • Yeah but pokemon came out later than turtles

  • the key is the promotion...pokemon is the biggest show of all time...there were pokemon toys...pokemon cards...pokemon taps with the chips...everything was about pokemons...so yeah...pokemon

  • come on...
