I think Running Wild was one of the first to discover the concept of it, but they arn't 100 percent Piratey, people forget about Running Wild's diverse topics, listen to some of the songs off of the Blazon Stone album, like LIttle Big Horn, Heads or Tails, Rolling Wheels (Which is about trucking), they're just known for the Pirate thing, thats why at least 1 song on every album is Pirate based, however must give credit where credit is due

Yeah, they dont take the Piracy as the whole act, and started as a standard Trash metal at first, they only wrote songs about this theme in the third album.

Its still Pirate Metal when they do it :p

BG's two earlier albums are speed/power like RW's Black Hand Inn. but after those albums they dropped the ball and started with this fairytale bullshit and sing along crap. i wish there was more metal and more beer. Helloween become metal again when they changed singer after a mediocre career in early 90's. what was wrong with Keeper of the seven keys era? i guess Michael Kiske lost himself with a new direction instead of heavy metal stuff and kicked Kai. if it's not broken don't fix it.

I recall only one other band that specializes in pirate metal, Mägo de Oz, more of the folk/power/progressive department and they sing in Spanish. Very different from RW though.
