So many can play the guitar on youtube like this guy, but only a handful that
can play music on the guitar. Where is the soul, where is the feeling, where are the musicians? We need some guy with lots of psyche issues that can play the music on a guitar.

I'm hearing this man for the 1st time, and it is an honor to hear such talent. I've listened to everyone from Beck, to Dimeola,Mcglaughlin,landreth,Hendrix,Johnson etc,i have to say this man is in that league and could very well be in another league all by himself. a super talent.
Listening to more of his work will only certify your feelings... and isn't it amazing how he and his talent were unknown... I just found out about him 2 years ago, and was, like you, blown away!!! BTW, SEE HIM PLAY PIANO, it's also mind blowing!
@Deagledrumzz Check out Buckethead if you haven't already, but you'll have to sift through about 6 different albums before making a decision. Lots of people listen to 'Jordan' by buckethead and think that's all he does. Really you'll be blown away by how various his songs are and how much he writes.
It's mentioned several time on the net and in magazine, Shawn played all the instrument on power of ten and he was creating on piano first then playing on guitar and other instrument. To me it make it clear he was a musical genius not only a a good guitar player.Personally he is the greatest artist i have ever eared but you can think what you want.

I love his playing. His technical ability is unmatched I'd say, and its even more amazing that he can take such fast runs, that sound so 'outside' and actually make them musical. No doubt a musical genius, but I think maybe he was too brilliant for his own good sometimes. Like, the musical ideas are often so sophisticated that, for me at least, it makes em kinda of less 'listenable'. Certainly to the casual listener as well. Just my opinion though - but yea, he was an absolute musical genius.

It's pretty simple, the reason everyone is so 'awestruck' is because he is awesome. If you don't believe me, surf the net and look for the opinions of the pro's and others.
He was/is a guitar and musical prodigy. Clearly, you either don't play a guitar or play a guitar in struggling 'bar scene cover band' and think your playing is in Shawn's league. If the latter please, do post a video so we see you 'strut your stuff'.
shawn is awesome, because he wanted to be the best...shawn wanted to be better than you and everyone at guitar, so if you're the guitarist you think you are and like shawn so much, you'd follow his lead...
what i mean is that if you're awestruck by lane, then you haven't heard him enough to move beyond it and set your own standards...shawn is no longer the limit, rather the starting point, that's the way i look at it, and that's what i learned from him...he inspired me to be the best, to be better than him...shawn busted his ass off on the guitar, he took the gift, cultivated it, and practiced and played more than you stay awake...EAT YOUR HEART OUT

Yes I agree. I think its a 'jazz' thing rather than a Shawn Lane thing. It is quite random and not something you can 'nod your head' to.
But after being absorbed beyond the point of control into Shawn's playing , Im starting to really like the style also
