  • I remember this playing during coverage of the Apollo program. LOVED it!!!!

  • I just must comment on this video I remember this commercial ,and song from Gulf Oil Company back in 1969 1970they run this, while watching TV Coverage of the Apollo space flights to the moon I was like 9 years old ".Bringing home the oil" its like a pirates song instead of pirates , square rigged sailing ships they had this giant oil tanker ship the pirate song is probably why I have fond memories of this ad and song arr! the kiddies love pirates yha they do thanks for posting lad.

  • Very similar memories here and were the same age group. Whenever I recall watching the Apollo coverage on NBC back in the day, this ad was alwyas there. The entire NBC News Apollo broadcast were sponsored by Gulf Oil. They even had the Gulf logo on the desk that the anchors (one of which was Frank McGee) sat at.

  • Damn! In some vault there MUST be the original!

  • I hate ships bcous of the storm frank in the philippines.... That storms killed 800 people in 3 hours>OMG thats a freak history in the philippines

  • AWESOME!SOMEBODY SOME DAY PLEASE POST THAT GULF OIL COMMERCIAL! hey!I know contact Gulf ask them to post that Apollo era ad!

  • This is quite close to the original commercial, which I remember loving as a kid back in the late '60s, and early '70s.

    Great memories!

  • I remember the ad from the Apollo shots on NBC and I remember this commercial from Gulf. I live in Delaware and when I drive the Route 1 bridge over the C&D Canal, I think of the song. Also, I remember the Gulf promo when they had the globe rotate and reveal the Gulf logo

  • great song bantry is the best town in the whole world and that is fact

  • I also believe it ran during one of the presidential convetions - I can remember being upset (as a young lad would be) that MY tv shows were interupted by some stupid boring political stuff, but focusing on the tv when the oil tankers with the clancy's came on. I called my dad on the phone and played this for him - he's in his 70's now and this brought back a lot of great memories for him and me. THANKS!

  • Thank you so much for putting that up!! My dad was 40 years in the oil business and he used to get all amped when that commercial would come on. Really brings back some great memories!

  • I got all amped when I saw the Gulf ad when I was3 or 4!Theres something deeply good about that ad from the Apollo era.

  • "Bringin' home the isle, me byes, bringin' home the isle!" Wow, this brought back some incredible memories of watching the Apollo flights with my dad. Thanks so much for posting.

  • Good Lord, I had not thought about this song/commercial for many, many years. If you are a Clancy Brothers fan do a search for their Christmas carols. It is definitely worth your time.

  • I'm getting that album for Christmas! Great gift idea for any Clancy lover like myself (I'm only 15!)

  • Thank you! It's been almost 40 years ago, but I still recall watching that commercial during the Apollo missions. I actually know the words of the song :) You've made my day. I never thought I'd hear that again. :)

  • In the late 1960s Gulf added six 300,000 tonne "Universe class" oil tankers to its fleet. I know the names of five of them - Universe Ireland, Universe Iran, Univers Kuwait, Universe Japan and Universe Portugal. Does anyone know the name of the sixth?.

Also, does anyone know what became of these vessels?. I believe ULCCs mostly became redundant after the Suez canal reopened - but I know nothing about the fate of the fate of the Universe class tankers.

  • May I reply to myself?. I have now determined that the 6th Universe class tanker was the Universe Korea. Does anyone know what happened to the Universe tankers?. I have a vague recollection that they were mothballed in a Norwegian fiord in the late 1970s.

  • @BScar23625 I don't know what happened to the other tankers but the Universe Ireland and Universe Kuwait which were featured in the commercial were scrapped in 1984.

  • @victorbrunswick Thankyou for that, Victor. My recollection is that the Universe class tankers (and similar vessels) were too large to go through the Suez canal after it fully reopened in 1977 and they then became redundant. After being laid up for a few years I am sure they would all have been scrapped.

  • Great posting - forgot all about this ad. In 1976/77 I was Radio Operator on the Universe Iran sailing into Bantry Bay from the Arabian Gulf. It was a sister ship of the Universe Ireland one of the 6 Liberia-flag ships Gulf chartered from DK Ludwig.

  • ive been looking for that Apollo era add too!good to know others are.SOMEBODY PLEASE POST IT!! Ihavent seen it since60s!thanks for psting, great tune!

  • I remember Texaco had a commercial with this song during the moon shots in the '60s.

  • No, it was Gulf.

  • Amazing! I remember seeing this, probably the same time/program another already posted. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    Aren't they good -- or weren't they?

  • i'm 14 and love the clancys and i never got a chance to see the commercial but i would have liked to thanks for giving me an idea of how it was

  • That commercial is my all time favorite; I remember the only time it was ever on was when Gulf sposored some important news event on, I think, NBC; space launches, especially. Thanks for doing this; I've been hoping to see it again for years.

  • Probably not or at least if it is then it's a huge coincidence as this is just random tanker footage to try to recreate the feel of a long ago tv commercial.

  • Is the port scene in the video actually taken at the Bantry (Whiddy Island) terminal?. I'm not sure. Bob
