  • i thought engine 97 crashed?

  • It was locomotive 40 that did, but it didn't receive much if any damage when it hit the garbage truck.

  • Ok, you're both HIGHLY uninformed about the Railroad and clearly don't know what you're talking about. First of all, @Gandalf0444 it was #97 that hit the garbage truck, and auston5001, just because a steam locomotive crashed, doesn't mean she'll go out of service. Hell, she didn't even crash. She hit a garbage truck out of her path but then went into emergency brake.

  • I think auston5001 means the 2-6-0,, old 97 ..

  • @daltonauto actually, the locomotive's number wasn't 97, she was pulling mail train #97

  • Yes, but her tender received very minor damage in the incident, and ran the next day.

  • @auston5001 sorry, that note to @daltonauto was supposed to go to you...

  • No... They leave the fire burning all night, 24/7, if the engine will be used the next day. Even when the engine is not in use. It's very common to do that on steam railroads during daily operation schedules. However, when they don't have trains the next day, they let the fire die out after the last train of the day.

If you've ever seen before steam RRs put their engines to bed, you'll see the fireman shoveling coal so there will be a fire the next morning if there'll be trains the next day.

  • 97 was actually built in 1923.

  • soooo many memories of riding the VRR

  • right down the road from me!

  • I've been to this railroad before. :)

  • Excellent job! Great editing. Thanks for posting. That last scene reminds me of being a kid and walking down the old branch line near my house in the summertime!

  • Does the fireman start the fire up at the crack of dawn at Essex and work all day? Or does another person (I think he would be called the "Firelighter" or the "Steam Raiser") come in during the dawn hours only just to get the fire started?

  • Comment removed

  • How does the firebox automatically open when he puts coal in it?

  • Where did you get that idea? It doesn't. There's two ways to open it... One way is by pushing the lever down and then push it in to 'lock' it open. That way, it's more generally used when you're showing someone the fire. When you're shoveling coal, there's a pedal right in front of the firebox that you step on to make it open. Pretty simple. Just step down, and shovel the coal. :)

  • foot pedal on the floor

  • Wow look at how the engineer is laying on that whistle cord at 6:06. That's the way I'd like to whistle 97 or 40.

  • Ya know how I identify whistles? I ask The locomotive engineer. XP

  • something cool about No.97 is that she has a bell that works by a string

  • There's also a bell lever in the cab and an actuator on the bell as well. I'm lucky enough to have been at the throttle of this locomotive. :)

  • Hey, I'm a train expert, but I'm not sure I know all the steam whistles yet. I have perfect pitch and I do have an ear for whistles. The whistles I know of are reading 6 chime, sp 6 chime, hooter, and that's it. how can I find out every whistle and what it sounds like?

  • SP 6-chime wins!

  • No... You're way way off. The whistle on the Consolidation #97 is a New Haven 6-Chime.

  • Yeah dude. That is a NH 6 chime. You can just tell.

  • at 1:20 was the cylinder type thing the whistle because it looks like one plus it would be weird to have the whistle in the cab plus i saw it on the boiler already.

  • Wow lol I think steam trains are kool but I just read your debate on wistles and im lost lol! Anyways great footage dude! lol well take care

  • Good for you, it means you have a life!

  • jomifu-lol, couldnt tell if that was an insult or compliment...

  • Sort of an insult towards myself, but a compliment to you. haha. Just joking around.

  • kk jo lol

  • Ok OK! Would you relax?! I do have a ear for whistles. I just Think stuff.

  • SP 6 chime repro.

  • Okay fine the engineer told me it's new haven and relax.

  • No offense but... How would you know the difference??

  • Whistles are VERY unique if you know what to listen for, and NOTHING but an SP-6 sounds like an SP-6

  • How 'bout they put a SP 6 chime on. No body will know the difference

  • I would know the difference.... but seriosly, they probably don't even have an SP whistle or even care to have one.

  • Great video.

    Joe

  • It must be New haven because SP 6 chimes squeak.

  • Any whistle can squeak. Some whistles are more prone to squeaking than others.

  • like 475's single chime whistle. (hooter)

  • Whistles known to squeak a lot are hooter whistles.

  • Are you sure that is a New haven 6 chime? I don't know because that might be A SP 6 chime whistle.

  • SP 6 chimes look and sound similar, but are much more melodic. Many long-bell 6 chimes such as the New Haven and the SP are similar, though.

But who knows, I could be wrong - maybe it is an SP whistle, but in dire need of a tune-up.

  • Nope, I know for a FACT that it is a New Haven whistle. Trust me on this one. ;-)

  • Dollywood 70 has that bell.

  • No. 97 was built by Alco in 1923, but not sold to the Birmingham and Southeastern until 1926.

  • There is a 40 in essex. It's a mikado that's back in service after she had her repairs.

  • watch the video I made cause it has the same train in it.

  • Well done, Joe! Good to see some footage of the personal side of railroading for a change. You gonna go back to see #40 with me sometime soon? ;-)

  • Great look at the RR Joe! I liked it.

  • i hate shooting here early in the morning, the sun is always behind the train...

  • Actually some of the worst lighting is in the afternoon... The shot at Chester was actually taken in the mid-afternoon.

  • Nice. I've never been to Coneticuit before, but a friend who used to live there had been lots before he moved and had pictures of the Chinese 2-8-2.

  • joe, you and adam are like the best in steam videos. what is your secret to choosing the right spots and angles to shoot the equipment.
