I honestly hate all these 'controversial' idiots who flame people with the credentials, the body AND the life experience of bodybuilding. The behind the neck shoulder press is a fantastic method to isolate the lateral deltoids, the ONLY time it will ever compromise joints is when : far too much weight is used, and when the form is sloppy. Light/medium weights with a very slow and controlled technique will guarantee results.
Don't come on here and say it's bad, Jim Stoppani is THE man to go to.
@mad1966dog yeah when your as big is him you can say he is brain dead otherwise keep it quiet, and he is right it is an extremely effective exercise when done properly
I believe that progressing to more than your own bodyweigth in the regular press (shoulder press from the front) will most definitely result in you having solid foundation for your shoulders. Behind the neck presses are nice, but no way can you use the same amount of weight as you can with the regular press. Bodybuilding wise I guess anything can be considered a great exercise, but progressing in weight has seen to be more than effective especially for average trainee.
For fuck sake, you're all argueing with somebody with a degree in Physiology with a minor in bio chemistry, and a PHD. This guy knows a hell of alot more than any of you.
You can take it behind...IN my routine I do 3 sets back shoulder press and 3 front..it really pumps it up..then move to dumbell press and see the results..
Thank you for the tip! I have a power rack and could perform the behind-the-neck shoulder press movement but couldn't set the rack up right to do so. That's the perfect way to set up and I never even realized.
I've never seen a PhD with so many tatooes ;-) Anyway, great explanation and demo. He knows what he's talking about, just look at his shoulders' width. I like his articles in M&F very informative and innovative
