The manifest Universe is not real. It rises and sets. It is fleeting. It appears and disappears. Anything that is NOT constantly present which is the nature of the maniferst Universe and the physical body is not real. Only the absolute pure Consciousness which is always present and does not rise and set is real. That is our real Self or atman. The jiva or the ego which rises and sets is not real. In deep sleep the jiva is not present but the Self or atman is present in deep sleep also.
That inner Supreme Self or Siva or pure consciousness exists in all living beings and not just human beings. That Supreme Self did not become this manifest physical body. The manifest Universe is a creation of avidya maya . The source of that creative power or avidya maya is pure consciousness or the Supreme Self. So Brahman did not become this relative or the manifest Universe. Brahman or the infinite absolute cannot become the finite Universe.
Despite all the research into consciousness in recent years. The "self" remains as illusive as ever. Science has proved in enormous success in regard of the world out there except in the field that calls our attention the most: "the self." There is no "inner self." Looking "in" we have found nothing because there is nothing to find. We humans beings are part of nature and therefore we will understand ourselves better by looking out rather than to look "in." The "inner self" is misconceived.
