She doesn't even look 15 or 16. Its most definitely a character aspect Climax didn't do enough research on. Though maybe Kauffmann could have been a pedophile. He's certainly an evil motherfucker. But that's my random speculation, probably not true because a 16 year old probably can't be a nurse.
Hahaa I bought this game a few days ago and just finished it! I've been interested in Silent Hill for a long time now and I've watched all your video's about it, including the Let's Play's. But this is the first game I actually played, and I really liked it. But I can imagine that if I had played them all, I could have some more criticism.
@AlessaChevalier No, you're not being to strong about it. I feel similarly, and felt that getting a girl who had suffered at the hands of her own mother, and turning her...evil, was NOT the right thing to do. Although, one could say after the whole experience, Alessa would have shut her heart up and become cold, hating the world. I mean, your own mother uses you for her own purposes, you get bunt horribly in the process, only to live in unbearable agony because of what is inside you, I wouldn't
@Victoura56 I think calling Alessa "evil" in this game is WAY too black-and-white. She doesn't set out to hurt Travis--as I said in the video, she needs his help, and in return she forces him to face his own demons so he'll be able to get out of the town.
@Cyborcat Yeah, Alessa isn't evil. Just very upset and angry. But I guess that when she finds someone willing to help her, she is kind to them in return, if in a strange way. Sometimes I don't aways understand the things going on, but listening to your vids and reading your replies helps to clear things up. You do an amazing job, and I thank you for putting in all the effort to do these videos. :D
@Victoura56 My only issue with Alessa, which I didn't get into in the video, is that she has way too much power--I was under the impression that the whole reason for keeping her in a coma for 7 years was so her suffering would cause her power would grow. If she's already as powerful here as she was in the first game, if not more, what's the point?
@IMnotRALPH1 I pointed out other reasons as well in the video. Besides, it's not a concept that has a concrete definition, and is mostly a matter of opinion. I do think he's Mary Sueish for the reasons I gave.
@12ealDeal LOL, nah, I can't bring myself to hate this game--it's so mediocre that it can't get that much of a reaction. Now there are things that I hate about Homecoming (and things I love too, believe it or not), but at least Homecoming causes a gut reaction in me.
But, overall, 0rigins is just meh--I just can't get worked up over it. I do consider it the worst in the series, tho, if that makes you feel any better =P
dena, i got an idea for the next years silent hill review, maby you could re-review silent hill 1 in the way that you reviewed silent hill 2 3 and 4, it would be cool to see a more in depth review of silent hill 1
@solidsnakemgs408 I never got too into the RE series. I played and loved the first 2 games, and Code Veronica, but I suck at 4, and never played the rest. I'll probably do an LP on RE2 eventually ... not sure about Code Veronica. That could be an LP, but it could also possibly be a Game Den, ala the Silent Hill ones, since there's a lot of story in it. But the other games are pretty much mindless entertainment to me.
I'm glad I didn't play this game. Lisa, what did they do to you? For me the handling of her character is the biggest crime of all. They make her seem like a one note drugged up floozie. Yes, her design in the first game was sexy, but at least she had a range of emotions and a sense of self respect. They didn't butcher Kaufman as badly, but even in the opening of the first Silent Hill you can see guilt and nervousness in his eyes suggesting that he was still human despite the things he did,
I think the city is experimenting with Travis’s Butcher. I’m not a big fan of Pyramid Head actually. I can see the symbols, but altogether I feel it’s presence overestimated (and overused later).
As for the fighting system … I loved it. Never picked up any TV-s or bottles. My final statistics shows of the many kills with bare hand. Travis is the only SH protogonist who doesn’t fear to dirt his hands. It’s a manly thing …
He is not good with women. You can tell it from the photos around the motel. Murdered and severed bodies of hitchiking women. All this comes to the question: who really is Travis? We play as his light side, the one who oppose the town.
Spoiler: Travis is a serial killer. His other side, his dark passenger transforms into the Butcher in Silent Hill … it can be killed and can be passed by Travis. A gift from the girl or the town? What would be our dark side look like?
Travis, a very troubled and (on the surface) nice guy come into town. He is the chosen one for the girl, the knight in shining armour … just because he help the little girl. But the looks is fooling … as always.
Travis does the right thing, relive moments of his past ont he way. But he also fights these monsters: the nurses are actually the versions of the flesh and blood living nurse, who plays games with him, but rejects him ultimately.
I like your observations again. Even if I don’t agree with them. I believe 0rigins is quite a male take ont he Silent Hill series. After Harry turned to a women int he movie, I think something like this was needed. Let me tell you my version and perspective of the story.
The city of Silent Hill is awekening. It is not that powerful as in the later episodes … borrows heavely from all the residents still lurking. This is the only time it can be used to change the versions os reality at will.
...little girl, while that goddamn movie portrayed her as a damn monster. This is not the Alessa I grew to love. I don't consider origins as a part of the Silent Hill story for many reason but I would do it just for this. I might be coming off stronger than people think I should on this but honestly the change in character hit me that hard. There's a reason I named my username what it is, which I'm sure you've noticed by now.
I've been holding this in for years so I think this is a good time to spill it here. I dislike Origins for a few reason but this on reason beats all the others. It ruined Alessa for me. Alessa was one of the most sympathetic characters I've ever encountered period. I thought the story of a child being burned by her uncaring mother for a cult and being put into a state of pure agony for 7 years was heartbreaking. But this game portrayed her as a cold, manipulative...
@newR4Zi3L "The Book of Lost Memories confirms that the Fukuro Lady is in fact the reincarnation of Lisa Garland still being tormented for her actions in the first Silent Hill." That's on the page you linked to.
I agree on all counts. I made many of the same observations in my series retrospective video.
It's a good game, just not great. Its primary novelty was that it was the first Silent Hill title for a portable game console.
Someone needs to give poor Pyramid Head a rest. That guy has become the Sonic the Hedgehog of the Silent Hill series. A poster child whose entire purpose has long since been diluted and lost.
@xRazorFistx Well said. At least he wasn't in Shattered Memories and isn't going to be in Downpour. Hopefully this will be a continuing trend *crosses fingers*
(I'm not counting Book of Memories since it has "silly little side game that no one will care about" written all over it, so I don't much care what they do with it)
Hm... well if i WAS to get into silent Hill what would you recommend playing? should i start with this one and move onto the well.... non outsourced games? i played Shattered memories and it was.... okay i suppose.
@Laxev There aren't really any that I specifically DON'T recommend. This one is the worst for me, just because it's so mediocre, IMO. Homecoming was too combat oriented for my taste, but some people have fun with it, and I thought its story was really good.
The first 3 games and Shattered Memories are the best, IMO.
@Cyborcat Hmmm i guess i'm hesitant with this one because i like my horror games to be well.... leave us feeling helpless you could say. and that idea of being able to leave the parallel world makes me.... eeeehhh. I'm going to end up checking out silent hill one day. I'm just not sure how i felt about Shatter memories... maybe it was because i played it on the wii though and it just pissed me off XD IMO
