Tom has sung it both ways ("The Compleat Tom Paxton" and "Live: For the Record" juxtaposing those two options), and I tend to sing it either way as well, depending on my fancy at the particular moment.

Darn good! Your voice reminds me of Phil Ochs, yet very original. Do you do any Ochs songs? It's refreshing to hear a young voice doing this stuff. Nicely done!

Some of them aren't that good (Small Circle of Friends, I'm Going to Say It Now), but I think you can find those plus Marchin', Changes, Power & Glory, When I'm Gone, and There But For Fortune. I'm finally going to take the plunge into his later stuff, so some of those will probably be added in the next few weeks, also.

As a fan of Tom Paxton since the 1960s it's really cool that a young guy like you is still singing and playing his songs. Singing and playing them really well too. You have a lovely voice.
