  • Putting the caps in series only hurts the ability of them to store charge. The highest charge you can get from caps in series is never higher than the energy stored in the smallest cap. It would be much more efficient to put them in parallel and then tie them into a bootstrap circuit to rais the voltage to the required 14 volts to start the car.

  • @dlstb Handling a hundred or so amps of cranking current would be a challenge for this type of circuit! I'm interested in how one could start designing this?

  • @urveen Everything would have to be sized correctly and probably immersed into a non-conductive oil to aid in cooling and electrical isolation. But it could be done. Nearly all high amp transformers are oil filled for this reason.

  • . I honestly don't want to fry my cars electric cicruits. But...the concept is very appealing. One ultracap should store more than enough energy for a a few good kicks. The battery would then have a buffer and could actually be reduced in size. What do you think?

  • that is often hard to start in cold environment. Diesel needs that first strong adiabatic compresion to start and my battery is too weak when it gets below -10C. I figured I could use ONE ultracap in conjunction with the battery for that first cold start. I just had a tonn of questions that only a EE guy could answer.

    great video my friend! I was thingking about this a while ago myself. I'm a MechE not a EE so all this electric stuff is like chinese algebra for me:) But the basics are relatively clear: ultracaps can give you a hard punch and don't suffer (like the battery does) doing so. This is perfect for car starting applications. I have a nice BMW 318d (diesel)

    How could you retrofit the ultracaps into your car circuit (especially the starter circuit) to supplement/extend the battery life? Do you have a website that has notes on this?

  • @loaddown7734 I meant the video to be for anyone who ever thought of trying this but was afraid to fry their car's electrical system. I was hesitant at first but after research I was confident to try it.

    the caps can be arranged differently than the way I had them. the box was just a way top test them out and have a way i could pick them up and move them around without electrocuting myself. I may arrange these into a battery case that is similar to the size of a car battery. no website yet
