One of the most tragically underrated movie of the 80s. A beautiful and hilarious little movie. I went to a strict Christian school in the 80s and, even though not Catholic, related to so much of this. Oh, and this is one of the best scenes!

Well there IS a difference between love and lust. And people do very often confuse the two. Lust can sure mess people up if they act on it and then end up realizing they don't even like each other or worse, can't stand each other and then it's too late because they've got kids and all that rot... Sooo technically the sermon actually makes sense but it's his negative attitude that makes people ignore the message.

I understand why they would have the one priest be crazy over the top in terms of his teachings on lust and sex but the way they portray it is just not reality. First of all the Church does not hate sex and the what the priest said was NOT authentic Catholic teaching. It's a shame that so many people think the Church thinks this way. It doesn't. It teaches purity, not a rejection or hatred of sexuality.

Yep, true enough. However, there WERE some priests back then that took it that far , totally misinterpreting the teachings (this was pre-Vatican II type stuff.) My Dad used to tell us stories about the matter.

this was based on the changes in the church the liberal priest who smoked cigarettes with the kids and the hard line priests brother Constance. Actually if you look back at the way kids behaved then and now they were doing a better job back then.

I strongly disagree with TMA271 - yes they had plenty of teenage pregnancies at that time. However the difference is that wealthy families took the girls out of the country, poor girls either had back alley abortions, or had the baby.  Also, girls could not finish high school - especially in the Catholic system, the public system was not much better.
