Okay, i recommend to all you people out there who are going to learn to play an instrument. PLAY VIOLA! reasons: 1) It sounds beautiful. 2) You will have more opportunities to play in prestigious orchestras. 3) It is bigger so when you go to play the violin, it is so much easier and you pick it up like THAT. You just have to learn the other clef.

viola is actually a "piccolo cello", that's why it can play Bach's Cello Suites!

good lord what is that 17 inches?! I'm stuck on 15 inches with my smaller hands, until I'm skilled enough to take the bigger size. It'd always be a stretch for me & I'll probably stick with 15.5 inches =(

With violas size DOES matter, if you want a deeper sound.

@meranchoria You should pick it up again. First I play for myself, and second I play for others. Having an audience is always secondary- you have to love the music you make before you worry about other people's opinions.

I didn't play my flute for a few years, but picked it up again and with vicious practice, it's now my best instrument. I'm not suggesting perfection; I just know with hard work you would be pleased at how much you remember!

@theredferret05 We're a small group of musicians. Aren't many viola players especially compared to other instruments so a violist is more rare. That might help explain it. =D

Too many Viola pieces focus on the higher range of the instrument, rather than the rich and full lower range... it's not a Violin, so why pretend that it is?

There need to be more pieces that capitalize on the Viola's individual strengths.

@IAwkwardSilence You are so damn right! ...i play violin and viola both ...and i love them both ..i think viola is a very special instrument with magnificent sound ..but most of the composers that wrote for viola they wrote having violin in mind !! i mean the pieces are written for viola they dont bring out this wormth and depth of the instrument ( as you very well said they focus in the higher range) and i think thats the reason of why its a ''misunderstood'' instrument.

Man violas sound great but they look gigantic in comparison to the violin. Makes it seem like it ought to be stood upright like a cello on your thigh or something. Hehe.

I have a 16" , and even being 6 4 tall it is very big. It is so different from the tiny violin I started with, but the tone and volume is awesome. One can manage, but taking some breaks to avoid some back aches :)

@Bratsche2000 I think he was just giving overall advice on playing it in an audition. It was mainly for choosing a tempo that works for the entire movement.

Great playing, but he looks like he might have some hand problems because his vibrato is shaky and uneven, particularly in Don Juan. In fact, the Don Juan could've been better (even Martin Stegner's masterclass for the Berlin Philharmonic was a bit iffy, but better than this), as his fingerings were a bit difficult and awkward. You would think members of the LSO and BPO would be flawless.

He can play all of this better than me, however, so I can't say much, can I?
