@Toucan38 Like the length, width and height of your aquarium. I really love the size of it and I will build an 40gal aquarium for 4 discus ( 3 female and 1 male ) in may, my birthday :D
@TheRafield *sigh* It's in my garage right now, afraid if i go dig it out it'll bring back some memories, i want to start over again, it wont help let me tell you. :/ (plus it's burred in stuff right now...)
Hello everyone, go to my channel if you'd like to see updated pictures of the aquarium, read the bulletin posted by me on the lower part of the page, and follow the URL.
Do you use any amount of aquarium salt at all? I want to set up a few small 3 gallon nano aquariums with 1-2 Java Ferns each. I've tried to in the past but they always slowly die. I cut back from 1 tablespoon aquarium salt per 5 gallon jug of RO water from a local pet store to 1/2 a teaspoon per 5 gallon jug. Is Co2 absolutely necessary? The only plant food I'm using right now is API Leaf Zone aquarium plant food.
Hey that's a nice set-up. Only your poor black neon tetra needs a school if his own kind. Rid-ich is better than lifeguard imo but I got one of those fluvial internal filters. I'm running it along with an aqua-clear power filter.
at the same time. so right now i'm in a battle with slime algae. Anyone know how to help? I can keep it down but never get rid of it. its actually made me so angry and i've thought about geting rid of my aquarium. Please if you have any ideas on how to help i will appreciate it.
Hey guys sorry for not replying in ages. Ill give you the low down on what has happened over the years. A month after posting my video, i had a battle with green water and i lost. Most of my HC died and i was left with everything else. i slowly grew everything to a point of immense beauty and then i think i stopped caring for the aquarium as much. I gave the aquarium a huge hack since it was in need of a major one. Everything was great until i was hit by green water and slime algae together...
Hello, I am trying to figure out what type of gravel/substrate you have? I'm looking forward to knowing that. Also, congrats on the tank it looks stunning!
@zaracki92 well, i think that hemianthus callitrichoides is the scientific name for 'cuba', while the scientific name for dwarf baby tears is "glossostigma elatinoides'..?? =)
@iMmember91 hemianthus callitrichoides "cuba" is commonly known as dwarf baby tears. The Cuba at the end just means they came from Cuba. most of teh forums i'm one, when we say baby tears, it means HC or HM.
glossostigma elatinoides doesnt really have a common name. some people just refer to it as baby tears.
@zaracki92 glosso is its common name. your other post about breaking up the light sched is completely wrong saying a break will stop algea its inbalance of light co2 nutrients that cause it. the reason people like to do a break is to make for a longer photo period to view the tank or to let the co2 build back up.
@zerocool212121 imbalance between light, nutrients, and co2 is the usual reason for a algae outbreak.. have you ever tried this method to control algae? i have and i know it works.
@zaracki92 without seeing it in a controlled inviroment i will hold off on beliving that that is the reason why it didnt grow as algea is a plant just a simple one at that. u on apc or tpt mfk?
How do i avoid algae in best way. cause my planst is kind a "fluffy" by the damn algae ;p. And my swordplant is getting holes in the "leafes". Ive recently installed a Co2 Reactor, and im going to buy powerglo lights, to get as wealthy plants as possible
@Ylofen theres a method to prevent algae. get a timer for your lights. leave the light on for 4 hour, turn it off for 1 hour. repeat the process till you have 10 or 12 hours of light. it take algae about 4 hours of straight light to start growing. so if u cut it off for a while, it disrupts the growth. it doesnt harm the plants.
can you help me? what are your specs? i have a 75 gal tank, a little more than 2 watts per gallon, co2 with inline reactor and ph controller set to around 7.1 to 7.2, bubbles going at 2 drops per sec. lights on 10 hrs a day, i'm getting algae on the glass, and hair algae growing on my plants, and the plants don't look like their growing well and slowly losing color...the substrate is eco complete, and i use liquid ferts every 4 days...what's wrong??? the tank is only 2 weeks old... thank you
Yeah the pleco and SAE have no place being in this tank =x Also, you should shade the anubis nana. Plant your tall plants in the back, the meds in the middle and the low in the front. nice tank XD
@lethal5250 Well its not just looks that most people buy plants for too. People buy plants to reduce the amount of water changes. It also oxygenates the water as well so in turn there are many reasons for plants other than just looks. Not to be ignorant but when you know stuff you can teach others.
In a (properly) planted aquarium, the focus should be more on the plant and decor then the fish. The fish should become part of the aquascape however. There should be contrast (between colors, shapes, etc.), levels, depth, etc... In a non-planted tank the inhabitants (usually fish and fake plants + decor) are pets. In a tank with plants in it, there are fish with plants, usually for there benefits. A planted aquarium is used for artistic reasons.
To be honest I wasn't expressing my opinion, rather replying to someones question about planted aquariums.
The aquarium is growing in, once the carpet plants have filled and the other plants have grown out it should look pretty damn nice. It is not the style I prefer (i'm more into dutch style) but its still nice.
@donkeyfieldmouse I disagree. A fish hobbyist can do what he/she wants for their tank. Plant focus or fish focus, its up to the individual. There is nothing wrong with this tank. You may disagree and that's fine. What you described above is a stereotype/biased opinion. And that's fine also. Just enjoy the video.
Lol, you seem to have misunderstood. I did not mean a fish tank in general, I meant a planted tank specifically. I do agree that it is up to the individual to do what they intend to with a tank, however, for it to be "classified" as
'planted' there is some criteria it should follow. The same is true for a biotope, or species tank, or what not. I find it unfair for an individual to place a plant in a tank and call it a 'planted' tank and therefore comparable to that of Amano.
If I were you, I would add another DIY co2 container with diffuser. Makes a BIG difference. My hc wasn't growing well and when I added another DIY co2 with diffuser, it began spreading, pearling and getting bigger leafs. It also had a much better color and my other plants (creeping jenny, ludwigia repens and swords) began growing like crazy. IMO, it is probably better to invest in a co2 setup instead of DIY for this big of a tank though. I'm saving up so money to buy one. Good luck and nice tank
Discus also need tall tanks so they can thrive and feel comfortable. This is very important for the species. Also weekly water changes. There are plenty of other species of fish that would do well in your size tank though. Plenty.
hmmm your probably right but for now the space they have i believe is quite fine. Lots of swimming room and hiding places. They are only about a couple inches big now, but thanks for the tip!
@HolySasquatchTurd Alright everyone i'm going to make a new video hopefully this weekend. sadly my HC for the most part has died and my other plants such as the crypts and swords have taken over. I have a big snail problem and they just wont die. They've made me quite angry and i thought i killed them all before but i was wrong. Im going to retry the HC in a couple of days so wish me luck. So wait until the weekend and you just possibly might see my tank. :)
@Toucan38 Snails can be annoying. Clown Loaches eat them. I've had Clown Loaches wipe out a large snail population before they love to eat them. Yoyo Loaches eat them too (but Yoyos are usually destructive to plants by uprooting them)
@Toucan38 Yeah! I have. There were more than a hundred. It takes time though. After a while my tank was just loaded with empty shells of all sizes. You actually get to see them eat them. They didn't just start eating them once I introduced the loaches. It's once they are settled in. Clown Loaches (and lots of others) tend to hide ALL THE TIME when you first introduce them because they're shy or afraid. This is completely normal. Give them time and they will start swimming around and scavenging.
@HolySasquatchTurd wouldn't the clown loach dig up all the plants tho? i dont see how snails are a problem any way, Im sure a clown loach in a planted tank is a bad idea tho
@greenaquarium I've never had a problem with clowns digging up plants. I find all clowns to be different. Some will poke holes in plants, some won't. It is a gamble. I think as long as you feed them enough and the stuff the want, they will leave the plants alone.
Hey first off very nice tank...ive just started on my first planted tank so far i have 3 different types of plants eco complete substrate an a piece of driftwood its a 20 gallon high so i was just wondering what kind of light would be best for my plants without getting a new hood will be posting a new video with the new substrate within a few days thanks...
how fast of growth does your hc go, i cant tell if mine is growing norm or if i just cant wait. ive had good luck with ottos for cleaning plants there lil vac's. nice 40g breeder hope to see update and how long its been between the two
I'm a very busy man sclb45, patience is key. :) Just playing around. No but seriously I've been busy these weeks so i am going to try to get an update around Friday to Sunday.
I personally would use ADA amazonian because not only is it a fertile substrate but it's also a very beautiful black color. Also your neons are sure to stand out with that substrate... I'm actually jealous. :)
will baby tears spread...? i have a mountain theme going.. just rocks right now i need a good carpet plant to over it all. i was thinking hair grass but i cant find good. they usually too long
your pleco is going to eat your plants somtimes you can get away with a bushy nose but oto cats are the best and shrimp even simese alge eater but plecos are a no no with plants
True driftwood does produce tannins but if you plan ahead and soak the wood for 2 weeks in a bucket of water most of the tannin will be gone. Then a month of carbon in the filter will get th rest out. Also If u do an amazonian setup it is purposley eant to have a bit of a brown ting to the water. Like in brazilin ranin forests. werre you will find black neons.
nice big tank but why the lack of hard scape! you know driftwood, rocks etc. As anubias loves to have their roots attached to wood, rocks gives the overall feel of a natural habitat. Just suggestions no meant to be rude or judge mental. Just here to help like th rest.
i dont know if u know but all tetras should be shoals of atleat 6 or more for them to have nicer colors u shoudl take out all guppys so u can have shoals of tetras and diccus tank look very nicely
Oh thanks for the advice Aquariumkid. I am going to get rid of all of my guppies so i can have some room for some neon or cardinal tetras. The reason i only have one black tetra is because that was my fist fish and i never got around to buying more of his species.
6500K is perfect for the plants and 156 watts makes 3.9 watts per gallon for your fish tank and this is consider as high lightning. the reason your HC didnt grew well could be lack of nitrate and phosphate. i dont know what type of fertlizer you use. if you are using any iron fertlizer then i suggest that you use SEACHEM FLOURISH NITROGEN and SEACHEM FLOURISH PHOSPHORUS together. i did not see that you are using CO2 and this is very important if you have high lightning. add co2 to your tank
sorry im going to reply to myself lol. i seen that you do have a co2. what i meant to say is try getting the Pressurized CO2 system. the one you have wont do much and plus its rated for fish tank from 10-20 gallons. i gurantee you that if you get all the stuff i just talked about then those plants of your will be growing like crazy.
i always had problem with growing those as well. but this time i planted it again and it seems to growing slowly. here are the tips from me which might help you. make sure your nitrate levels are around 10-20 range and phosphate level should be close to nitrate levels. add liquid fertilizers and add co2 to your tank and this will grow that plant for sure. if you have any algae problem do let me know because i had a serious out break of algae but now i figure out how to solve the issue. nice tank
algae occur when there are too many nutrients in the water. but it doesn't mean you should stop feeding your plants. your nitrate should be always kept at 10-20ppm range and phosphate should be around the same range. plant use boh of these to grow. lack of either one would cause the algae to grow because your plant wont grow anymore and what ever you feed them the algae will use it. i don't know what kind of algae you got. please post a new video of your tank it would be nice to see it. continue
to tell you the truth my own plant are suffering from algae but this is my own fault as i never added any nitrate to my tank and now whatever i feed algae uses it. i have ordered some stuff and im sure the problem would be solved. i think i already have told you what you needed in my last comments. remove carbon if you are using it. lights bulbs must be changed every 8-10 months. they will no longer help your plants grow well. don't use chemical to kill the algae, ask me question if you need to.
Hey there! I think I accidently deleted your comment on my other video :( Anyways, what kind of substrate do you have? The HC is looking pretty good so far
I have a tank similar to yours. I had guppies but they would bite the HC and shake it like a dog. I would always find it floating in the tank. They would also have tons of babies so I eventually go rid of them, now I just have a bunch on neon tetras. Very good tank, I like it 5/5 stars. Keep making updates, don't leave us hanging.
What are the sizes please???

i subbed cause ur tank wass too beautiful..and should i use ADA amazonian soil?it may make my neons stand out
DemonDrug95 2 years ago
I personally would use ADA amazonian because not only is it a fertile substrate but it's also a very beautiful black color. Also your neons are sure to stand out with that substrate... I'm actually jealous. :)
Toucan38 2 years ago
haha..erm i will put the cabomba in the back, the vallisneria on the middle and some java fern but im not sure about the foreground..:P

Toucan38 2 years ago

Why thank you. lol
Toucan38 2 years ago
hey that's a nice idea with the toothbrush
IceMackats 2 years ago
lol Thanks. Got a scrub brush with a long handle though because it took too long for me to clean my tank with that little brush. :)
Toucan38 2 years ago
True driftwood does produce tannins but if you plan ahead and soak the wood for 2 weeks in a bucket of water most of the tannin will be gone. Then a month of carbon in the filter will get th rest out. Also If u do an amazonian setup it is purposley eant to have a bit of a brown ting to the water. Like in brazilin ranin forests. werre you will find black neons.
b3bandit 2 years ago
nice big tank but why the lack of hard scape! you know driftwood, rocks etc. As anubias loves to have their roots attached to wood, rocks gives the overall feel of a natural habitat. Just suggestions no meant to be rude or judge mental. Just here to help like th rest.
b3bandit 2 years ago
nice tank. how much did the lighting cost?
klswn22 2 years ago
About $130.
Toucan38 2 years ago
You should buy freshwater turtles... Make em eat the plants.
arminom 2 years ago
Looks nice. I like the black substrate and co2 ladder. A large piece of driftwood or rock might spice it up a bit.
DirkYerkowitz 2 years ago
Id love to add some nice wood but makes the water brown or yellow. (Wood leaches tannins = bad)
Toucan38 2 years ago
i dont know if u know but all tetras should be shoals of atleat 6 or more for them to have nicer colors u shoudl take out all guppys so u can have shoals of tetras and diccus tank look very nicely
TheAquariumKid 2 years ago
Oh thanks for the advice Aquariumkid. I am going to get rid of all of my guppies so i can have some room for some neon or cardinal tetras. The reason i only have one black tetra is because that was my fist fish and i never got around to buying more of his species.
Toucan38 2 years ago
yeah get like 20-25 neons tetras(cheaper) lol
looks very nice trust me yeah all tetras need to be in shoals of 6 min am good with tetras

tell me more about your lights. what are the kelvin on your lights and how many watts are the lights or what is the total watts.
happisonu 2 years ago
Kelvin:6500
Watts:156
Toucan38 2 years ago
6500K is perfect for the plants and 156 watts makes 3.9 watts per gallon for your fish tank and this is consider as high lightning. the reason your HC didnt grew well could be lack of nitrate and phosphate. i dont know what type of fertlizer you use. if you are using any iron fertlizer then i suggest that you use SEACHEM FLOURISH NITROGEN and SEACHEM FLOURISH PHOSPHORUS together. i did not see that you are using CO2 and this is very important if you have high lightning. add co2 to your tank
happisonu 2 years ago
sorry im going to reply to myself lol. i seen that you do have a co2. what i meant to say is try getting the Pressurized CO2 system. the one you have wont do much and plus its rated for fish tank from 10-20 gallons. i gurantee you that if you get all the stuff i just talked about then those plants of your will be growing like crazy.
happisonu 2 years ago
so did any of those plants grew well ?
happisonu 2 years ago
Everything grew extraordinarily well other than my HC. It's still hanging on but it's not really growing.
Toucan38 2 years ago
i always had problem with growing those as well. but this time i planted it again and it seems to growing slowly. here are the tips from me which might help you. make sure your nitrate levels are around 10-20 range and phosphate level should be close to nitrate levels. add liquid fertilizers and add co2 to your tank and this will grow that plant for sure. if you have any algae problem do let me know because i had a serious out break of algae but now i figure out how to solve the issue. nice tank
happisonu 2 years ago
Oh i didn't read the second part of your comment, yes i do have huge algae problem and it is taking my aquarium over.
Toucan38 2 years ago
algae occur when there are too many nutrients in the water. but it doesn't mean you should stop feeding your plants. your nitrate should be always kept at 10-20ppm range and phosphate should be around the same range. plant use boh of these to grow. lack of either one would cause the algae to grow because your plant wont grow anymore and what ever you feed them the algae will use it. i don't know what kind of algae you got. please post a new video of your tank it would be nice to see it. continue
happisonu 2 years ago
to tell you the truth my own plant are suffering from algae but this is my own fault as i never added any nitrate to my tank and now whatever i feed algae uses it. i have ordered some stuff and im sure the problem would be solved. i think i already have told you what you needed in my last comments. remove carbon if you are using it. lights bulbs must be changed every 8-10 months. they will no longer help your plants grow well. don't use chemical to kill the algae, ask me question if you need to.
happisonu 2 years ago
So did those carpet plants spread? I'm curious to see how your tank looks now and whether you had to prune or not.
PSNjizzcake 2 years ago
No i don't know why, do you have any pointers for growing HC? Any help would be gladly appreciated.
Toucan38 2 years ago
Hey there! I think I accidently deleted your comment on my other video :( Anyways, what kind of substrate do you have? The HC is looking pretty good so far
sadisticotaku 2 years ago
I have a tank similar to yours. I had guppies but they would bite the HC and shake it like a dog. I would always find it floating in the tank. They would also have tons of babies so I eventually go rid of them, now I just have a bunch on neon tetras. Very good tank, I like it 5/5 stars. Keep making updates, don't leave us hanging.
tyler361549 2 years ago
Thank you very much. I will try to make an update today or tomorrow. I wish the aquarium was like this again...
Toucan38 2 years ago
Where is the update? How are the dwarf baby tears doing? I have a new tank and have a nice carpet going. No vid yet but there will be one.
tyler361549 2 years ago
Sadly, the HC is hanging on but not really growing.
Toucan38 2 years ago
At least its not dead
tyler361549 2 years ago
Can you put a Red Eared Slider in there?
arminom 2 years ago
No it would eat all of my plants.
Toucan38 2 years ago
looking cool dood good job

Toucan38 2 years ago
NICE. Already looks great ! too bad those discus are hiding out in the video.
mishmosh2000 2 years ago
Thank you. Yeah i know, they always hide only to come out when i leave and only to go back when i enter my room.
Toucan38 2 years ago
Those discus are scared because that tank is so open. Or course, they're going to want to hide.
I would recommend inserting plants that reach the top, some very large and tall driftwood and some sort of backing behind the rear tank wall.
Discus are timid fish. If they always hide when you come into the room what's the point?
