I'm not a cellist, but I'm pretty sure from my experience in an orchestra setting, not many cellists, or any musicians for that matter, truly create a bond so tightly fitted with their instrument.
I love how the orchestra crescendos incrementally and then explodes into full-blown majesty in the introduction of the main theme and then falls back down to play around with it.Beethoven sure does know how to make a fancy entrance. :3
This is one of my favorite works by Beethoven. Very elegant and beautiful. One can suppose that Beethoven might intended this work as his Cello Concerto.
You have to admire Beethoven's ambition here. He doesn't set out to write a Sinfonia Concertante, its more like he's embedded a great piece of chamber music inside a much bigger orchestral structure. Which is insane.
don't you just LOVE Beethoven in a houmorous mood! This piece shows a different side of the often pictured as a misanthrop. Funny, lightspirited.
re: great musicians playing together. Personally I think here less is more. These stars add up to less than their sum. I prefer chamber ensembles playing this concerto, less star power more fun. These three don't have fun - way too earnest all of them.
Exception: the Capucon brothers plus Argerich - mindblowing!!! Because they have FUN
I also have always adored this piece, even though many think it to be inferior Beethoven. It soars in a joyous manner and I love the solo writing. It seems that one either likes it or hates is -- and like "Wellington's Victory," there is no middle ground. My only beef is -- I wish Beethoven had written an expanded slow movement -- twice as long.
A few days ago, the PBS in my area aired a concert at Carnegie Hall celebrating its 120th Anniversary. One segment was this Beethoven’s masterpiece. My eyes were glued to the screen while I listened to the 3 instruments Q&A, respond, or dance to each other. This YT version is equally outstanding. I have a CD featuring a 1980 recording conducted by the notorious Karajan. In these three occasions, Yo-Yo Ma embraced the cello exclusively. He probably has hardwired this score in his brain.
I simply adore Barenboim, he is so charismatic and fabulous, and of course Yo-Yo Ma and Perlman are superb as always! Thankyou for the great performance X
This performance is beyond great, it is historic. How many times do three giants in music get together with one of the world's best orchestras to create such a magnificent performance. Using those two thoughts as justification to part with $26US, I bought the DVD which also has the Choral Fantasy. PS. Please do not "flame" me for mentioning the exchange of funds. I support musicians when and if I can.
For my part, it always brings me a special feeling when I hear this concerto again, because it was actually this concerto which caught me many years ago, and made me into the classical music addict I am today. So it is perhaps not only the well-known pieces, we all know, that are effective in attracting young people to classical music, i guess, but also, or maybe more, the special and intriguing.

@MegaThucydides The reason the soloists have scores is that Barenboim had to have a score, since he was conducting as well as playing, and it would be unproffessional for the other two to appear and play it from memory
I think this concerto is an underrated masterpiece. Beethoven doesn't deal with his usual subjects (faith, brotherhood, freedom, joy, the triumph of the will). He has no gorgeous tunes on offer. What we get instead is him at his most austere and 'classical', solving problems of musical structure and balance. This is not to say that the piece is emotionless. In fact nothing else in the repertoire so powerfully conveys the impression of friends making music together. I think it's just wonderful.
@conradin1000 I dont think this (fantastic!) piece is underratet. Its just very expensive because of the three soloist. Thats why its not played very often. I totally agree with you on the other points!
@conradin1000 When you say he has no gorgeous tunes on offer I'd like to comprehensively disagree with you...there are some of the most majestic and soaringly beautiful phrases I've ever heard here, I mean the way he plays with the theme refer 5:40 as an example rivals and possibly tops the best of the F major 6th symphony.
The rest of your comment, however, was right on the button.
@conradin1000 Excuse me, but i think you are wrong. Beethoven is the maxim representant of the romanticism. The romanticism express the streght of the feelings. In this tenor, Beethoven´s music represent the joy of the living, the sadness, the rage, the triumph. The music that represents what you say about the austere and the classical is the music from mozart.
I am sure, Beethoven will be adored of the sound of this concert from interpretation with perfect musiciants and of Berliner philharmoniker!

I just love the chamber music feeling. Just look at how the soloists are esatblishing contact with each other!
And the orchestra (Berliner Phil) has the superb Emmanuel Pahud playing flute!
This is even better than the legendary recording with Richter, Oistrach and Rostropovich. And the biggest difference is Yo-Yo Ma!
