SCHWEEET!! Noticed the contra-rotating props, now do the turbines also run one CW and the other CCW, or does the right or left turbine go thru a gear box.? lat'r Buzz
I like that they got a four person rear bench under that canopy, but I have to question how strong it is. Was it built to Lavin specs? If the boat rolls at high speed will it hold up?
Well lol no I don't think an air duct can be patented. The manifolds maybe but I don't know.
My Way III is an awesome boat. Congrats to Bill Tomlinson, Mike and Paul Fiore and their crew for this project. I just hope it doesn't go on the sale blocks in six months like so many other boats have(Loony Tunes for ex.).
I did some reading on the Apache engines - The General Electric T700's. There something. I didn't realize that Turbine Marine uses these. I bet they cost a fortune.
Well Jonny I must have been thinking about the Apache BOATs lol. TM uses the Lycoming T53-13B(1450hp) and the T53-703(1800hp) motors from Chinook helicopters.
I didn't realize that the water jacket was patented. That's a neat idea.
Are the air intake ducts and manifolds on the Myway proprietary too? They're pretty sweet. When you look into them at the dock, you're staring into an abyss.
A comment on the motors. These ones come from Apache attack helicopters and make 1800-2000hp each. The ones in the 50' Nor-Tech cat Warbird(video here) make 1450hp each. Warbird runs 150+ so this boat should run 180-190.
Turbines have a very high power-to-weight ratio. Savings can be as high as 600lbs compared to a piston engine of similar power. And forget about getting an 1800hp piston motor to live in a boat, at least for very long. TM says its motors can go 5000hrs between major overhauls.
Well the size is standard yes. As far as length is concerned, it depends on the boat. Nor-Tech has a special rear deck for the pipes to run from the front of the motors to the transom(see the video here).
For this installation the pipes exit forward, making them very short. Turbine Marine can do this because of their patented water-jacketed exhaust pipes, which reduce heat 95%. Dry pipes could not be placed so close to the cockpit.
i would take a 35 prodrive over this anyday!

@brennontrant
The current owner of this boat might feel the same way.

@JonnyRawket they use the t700's and i've seen some turbine boats runing T58's, which is a CH-46 engine i think.

Rigged by Turbine Marine of Ft. Lauderdale. Best in the world at turbine installations.

Cool. There website has some nice photos up I see.
Those are some crazy exhaust pipes. I wonder if they are standard issue now on all the boats?
