I'm an MJ fan, but people saying he could play instruments are wrong. I am CERTAIN of this. He did not play instrument on any albums but he did "beat box" in them, which means he gets a notice in the percussionists, you can receive a credit for just hitting one note on the guitar, piano etc. However mike did play bongo drums before taking lead vocals in the J5.
@cosmin296 Like i said, Mike would only have to hit one note on the guitar to get a song credit. Michael Jackson could not play an instrument! He would carry a tape recorder everywhere he went so if a beat or melody came into his head he could record him humming or beat boxing it, he would then hire a keyboard player to bring it to life. If MJ could play an instrument to recording standard he would have played during concerts etc. you won't find footage of Michael playing anything.

Well from what's been documented Michael could play guitar pretty well, he played piano, drums, and of course he was a master beat boxer as well. I would say he's the total package for his talent and the shows he created. You can call him a musician, dancer, and of course an entertainer.
But I hate the Prince/MJ comparisons. They're both amazing in their own way and contributed legendary status to music.
He probably played piano and guitar just well enough to write songs. Composers have to be able to play a few instruments. And unlike most pop stars, Michael composed, which is AWESOME!!! Actually, Berry did write songs for them. he was a part of the team, "The Corporation," that were the primary songwriting team for a lot of the early Jackson Five songs.

I'm an MJ fan, but people saying he could play instruments are wrong. I am CERTAIN of this. He did not play instrument on any albums but he did "beat box" in them, which means he gets a notice in the percussionists, you can receive a credit for just hitting one note on the guitar, piano etc. However mike did play bongo drums before taking lead vocals in the J5.

@cosmin296 Like i said, Mike would only have to hit one note on the guitar to get a song credit. Michael Jackson could not play an instrument! He would carry a tape recorder everywhere he went so if a beat or melody came into his head he could record him humming or beat boxing it, he would then hire a keyboard player to bring it to life. If MJ could play an instrument to recording standard he would have played during concerts etc. you won't find footage of Michael playing anything.

Well from what's been documented Michael could play guitar pretty well, he played piano, drums, and of course he was a master beat boxer as well. I would say he's the total package for his talent and the shows he created. You can call him a musician, dancer, and of course an entertainer.
But I hate the Prince/MJ comparisons. They're both amazing in their own way and contributed legendary status to music.

He probably played piano and guitar just well enough to write songs. Composers have to be able to play a few instruments. And unlike most pop stars, Michael composed, which is AWESOME!!! Oh, forgot to say - Berry Gordy DID NOT write the songs for the Jackson 5!! They were written by a small chosen group of people, mostly by a team of 2.
Also, you forget, the Jacksons were well capable of writing thier OWN material and that is why they left Motown - for more creative freedom - hence, The *Jacksons* were born - they wrote all thier OWN material, played all thier OWN instruments and were one of the biggest acts around at during those times.

If my memory serves me well, Freddy Perrin, Deke Richards, Bobby Taylor, Alphonzo Mizell & Hal Davis, were part of team that wrote & produced the J5s first singles. Though, collectively, along with Berry Gordy they were called, The Corporation. Gordy did not always take part in that area; he was great at tweaking/adding or rearranging a track, where needed. I know Berry wrote songs as far back as when he was still working with his farther, (before he began Motown).

Actually you are right, in off the wall, he wrote his lyrics, but not for records during that time. BUT, of course i thriller, he did write and compose Beat it, Billie Jean, and all the songs there he did more than one thing Thriller.. he gave credits to someone else because he was a jehovah witness which was against the song Thriller, so he gave credits to Robert or whatever his name is. MJ did play guitra, piano, and percussions. he was only in a band with a tyrant father.

If he had done the album with just his songs, from the era of off the wall-thriller, it would have been a success..
